Uganda U17 National Team (Cubs) has started preparations for the forthcoming U17 AFCON Zonal Qualifiers.

The CECAFA Region tournament will be held in Ethiopia from 30th September to 15th October 2022.

Team Uganda entered camp at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru under the stewardship of coach Hamza Lutalo who will be assisted by Brian Ssenyondo.

According to FUFA, the Preliminary Squad is undergoing training and mandatory exercises before a final squad is named for further sessions.

The current group is mainly composed of players selected from the various Youth Competitions; USSSA Football Championships held in Arua and Lira, CAF Pan African Schools Championship, and players already in the FUFA Youth players database system.

The players will then undergo various medical tests including MRI, collection of data, and passport processing before FUFA releases the final squad.

Besides Uganda and hosts Ethiopia, a couple of CECAFA nations including Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Somalia are expected to take part.

The top two teams (finalists) will qualify for the 2023 AFCON U17 final that will be held in Algeria.

The four semifinalists in Algeria will book tickets to the FIFA U17 World Cup in Peru as CAF representatives.

Uganda made its debut at the AFCON U17 at the 2019 tournament held in Tanzania where they were stopped at Group Stages.

They qualified for the 2021 tourney in Morocco but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
