Godfrey Nsubuga has been in sensational form and came into the 2023 Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Open Golf Championship as one of the favourites.
The opening round of the 82nd edition of the tournament was a testament to Nsubuga's form as he returned a magnificent 7 under 67 gross score.
The Mehta Golf Club member was sensational throughout the round recording either birdies or par scores on all holes but one (No. 17) where he recorded a bogey.
Nsubuga took the Kitante course by storm, hitting birdies on the first three holes and the ground was set for a superb performance that topped not only Burundian Abdoul Bizimana, Tanzania’s Ally Isanzu and the defending champion Andrew Ssekibejja with whom he played Match 6 but all the 131 players that competed on the day.
“This [today] was my day. Everything I did was right to the point. My swing, approach and putting were all spot on. I am happy for my round,” Nsubuga said of his performance.
Behind Nsubuga was Ibrahim Bagalana who played 2-under 70 and tied for third place are Peter Tumusiime and Joseph Kanolera who played a par score of 72.
Former winner Joseph Cwinya-ai completed the top five with a 1 -over 73 while defending champion Andrew Ssekibejja had a day to forget having played 10 over 82.
