  • Kampala University 2-5 St Lawrence

St. Lawrence University secured a 5-2 victory against Kampala University in the University Football encounter played on Tuesday evening.

In the busy game played at Prison Grounds in Luzira, the two sides treated the fans to a seven-goal galore. It was a repeat of last year’s quarterfinals where St. Lawrence came out victorious.

The visitors took the lead through Micheal Abura who nodded home from close range in the third minute of the game. The early goal gave the visitors energy throwing several bodies upfront to search for more goals.

The midfielder Abura beat many bodies from the middle park before he placed the ball on the near post to double the visitors’ lead ten minutes later.

Abura completed a hat-trick in the 16th minute. The midfielder was on sparkling form as he easily tapped home Innocent Matege’s sweet cut-back delivery.

At that moment, Kampala University’s head coach Vicent ‘Titi’ Tumusime made three quick charges to put a block to the humiliation.

From that juncture, Kampala University settled into the game limiting spaces for Abura and Matege in the middle park.

Before the end of the first stanza, Andrew Kafuko thought he had pulled back one for Kampala University before the assistant referee flagged it off.

On the other hand, Micheal Kayongo extended the visitors’ lead to four with yet another quick transition by David Ssozi’s troops.

In the 57th minute, Tonny Ndase finally pulled one back for the hosts after a powerful effort from the 12-yard mark.

With six minutes past the top of the hour, St. Lawrence’s goalkeeper Sulaiman Ssali guided Kampala University’s corner kick into his net.

Ten minutes later, the hosts found a glorious chance to find the third but Yosia Kisa failed to find the target with a goalkeeper to beat.

With eight minutes to play, second-half substitute, Henry Kayemba sealed St Lawrence’s victory with their fifth goal of the day.

The two sides will meet at Kavule in the second leg of the quarterfinals duel on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.
