The Uganda Women's National Basketball Team has secured a spot in the final of the ongoing Zone Five FIBA Afrobasket Women’s Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt.
The Gazelles registered a well-deserved 66-30 victory against Burundi on Thursday evening at Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall.
Though the Gazelles started slowly, trailing by three points (17-14) at the end of the first quarter, they returned in the second with an improved performance, opening up an eight-point lead by halftime.
Center Mellisa Akullu led the charge, scoring eight points in the second quarter.
After halftime, Uganda dominated, extending their lead to 20 points by the end of the third quarter. Jane Nansikombi shone in this period, scoring 10 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.
Late in the final quarter, rookies Bushira Namayanja and Modesta Anyanga entered the game and both scored.
Nansikombi (14 points), Akullu (12 points), and Paige Robinson (10 points) led Uganda's scoring in double digits. Only Ines Nezerwa managed double digits for Burundi, scoring 10 points.
Uganda will now face hosts Egypt in the decisive final on Saturday. The winner of this highly anticipated match will secure the sole qualifying slot for the final FIBA Women's AfroBasket tournament.
