Byron Rugomoka can celebrate his first National Rally title after a Sporting Commission decision reviewed the 2022 National rally championship standings. Rugomoka and co-driver Hakim Mawanda’s victory was put on hold after the crew of Ponsiano Lwakataka/Paul Musaazi requested for a review of the championship standings alleging a breach of the regulations during round sixth of the NRC in Kaliro last November. The crew alleged that Rugomoka(crew 58) and the crew of Jonas Kansiime(crew 44) did not take part in the event prize giving ceremony; which was a breach of the competition regulations. Rugomoka had finished third overall while Kansiime second. Following a series of meetings and hearing with the crews, the Sporting Commission concluded as follows; “From the stated findings, it is factual that Crew No.44 did not participate in the Olympic Style Podium because of miscommunication. It is also factual that the said crew did not attend the social/ sponsor/ civic gathering which formed the prize-giving ceremony of the event. “Crew No.58 did not participate in the Olympic Style Podium because of miscommunication. It is however factual that the said crew attended the social/ sponsor/ civic gathering which formed the prize-giving ceremony of the event,” reads a letter from the Commission. By the findings, Jonas Kansiime’s points for that round have been withdrawn while Byron will be fined up to Ug Shs.1.500.000. The decision confirms Byron Rugomoka and Hakim Mawanda as the 2022 National rally champions and relegated Kansiime to third place overall. Early Championship leader Ponsiano Lwakataka completes the season in second place.
