Cheptegei will feature at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August 2023 where he seeks to defend his 10,000m crown. The Ugandan was also announced for this season’s Wanda Diamond League series in Athletissima, Lausanne slated for June 30. He finished third and fourth in the 5000m event at the meeting in 2017 and 2019 respectively and he's ready to push for more this term. Cheptegei is also hoping to claim a second Diamond Trophy in 2023, having become the first Ugandan athlete ever to win the title back in 2019. The Ugandan Olympic and world gold medallist finished third at the World Cross Country Championship with a time of 29:37 in Bathurst. He secured second place in his second attempt at the half marathon in New York in his only two races this year. Cheptegei will face competition from Femke Bol and Jakob Ingebrigtsen among others.
