Uganda Cranes defender Bevis Mugabi has joined Cyprus side Anorthosis Famagusta after playing out his contract with Scottish club Motherwell.
The 29-year-old has signed a two-year contract with The Phoenix which keeps him at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season.
The towering defender had spent weeks now without a club, after departing Motherwell, where he had spent five seasons, in which he made 125 appearances.
Mugabi’s new team is one of the founding clubs of the Cyprus Football Association in 1934. The club is a part of the Anorthosis Famagusta multi-sport club founded in 1911 in Varosha, Famagusta.
Anorthosis Famagusta is also simply known as Anorthosis in English, or Anorthosi in Greek – interchangeably referred to as ‘The Old Lady’ or ‘The Phoenix’.
They host their games at Antoni’s Papadopoulos Stadium. They compete in the Cypriot First Division and the Cypriot Cup.
Uganda Rugby Cranes edged Burkina Faso 25-15 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole to qualify for the 5th-place final.
The Rugby Cranes had a shaky start and Burkina Faso scored first with Yamaeco Zana Claude grounding in the sixth minute.
Utility back Philip Wokorach put Uganda on the board with a penalty before Shakim Ssembuusi completed a good backline move to score Rugby Cranes’ first try.
Wokorach would stretch over to create some more separation before slightly skewing the conversion.
Scrumhalf Bationo Bognomo scratched and dived over to bring the score 10-15 at the break.
At the start of the second half, the Rugby Cranes camped in the opponents’ red zone forcing the Burkinabes to commit several infringements that led to the referee awarding Uganda a penalty try.
Burkina Faso went hunting again and they were rewarded with a try from Zebango Kiswendsida who was at the end of a sweet move from a clean lineout take inside Uganda’s 22.
Wokorach extended the lead with a penalty with about 15 minutes to play and that was the last score of the game.
The Rugby Cranes will take on Senegal on Sunday in the 5th Place Final.
Uganda Rugby Cranes will be looking to make amends when they take on Burkina Faso in a classification game of the Rugby Africa Cup.
Rugby Cranes are now playing for the highest possible fifth-place finish which can only be achieved by winning their next two matches starting with Burkina Faso on Wednesday afternoon.
The 23-man squad for the game was named after the captain’s run on Tuesday afternoon with two changes made to the starting 15. Alex Aturinda and Joseph Aredo will start in place of Moses Zziwa and Jones Kamiza who sustained their injuries in the quarterfinal loss against Zimbabwe Sables on Saturday.
The coaches went with a 6-2 bench split again and utility back Pool Kalungi is in line to make his debut off the bench with Joseph Oyet the other back named on the bench.

In a captivating and highly competitive final match held at the Kampala International School Uganda (KISU), MTN Uganda registered a nail-biting 2-1 win.
This victory not only clinched the championship for MTN but also highlighted the significance of sports in the corporate environment and the unity of the ICT sector in Uganda.
MTN’s journey to the finals was marked by a series of impressive performances. They qualified as the top team in their group and delivered a commanding 9-2 victory against the Ministry of Health (MOH) in the semi-finals.
The final match against Huawei was a hard-fought battle with MTN demonstrating exceptional skill and tenacity to come from behind and secure the win as both teams, known for their prowess and competitive spirit, delivered a spectacular performance that kept the audience on the edge of their seats.
The tournament underscored the importance of sports within the corporate environment as a means to keep employees engaged, fit, and motivated. Participation in such events fosters team spirit, enhances physical well-being, and provides a much-needed break from the regular work routine.
The tournament was significant for its inclusive participation from every ICT stakeholder in the country. This included telcos, ministries, and regulators who support the sector. The event served as a unique platform to bring together key stakeholders, reinforcing solidarity and a shared vision for Uganda’s ICT future. It was a powerful channel for ensuring that all participants were aligned in their commitment to the country’s ICT vision, promoting collaboration and mutual support.
Honourable Aminah Zawedde, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT, graced the event as the guest of honour. Her presence highlighted the importance of the tournament and the role of sports in fostering community spirit and teamwork.
“I am glad to see the various ICT Stakeholders come together as one to represent the ICT sector in such activities. I thank the private sector, government of Uganda ministries and agencies that have actively participated in the Huawei ICT Football tournament,” Zawedde said.
The tournament that started last month was organized by Huawei and a culmination of efforts from various organizations including MTN Uganda, Uganda Police, Uganda Communications Commission, Ministry of ICT, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, Airtel Uganda, Uganda Revenue Authority, and NITA-Uganda.
According to Sunrise Xie, the Managing Director of Huawei Uganda Office, the tournament was launched to encourage physical activity and combat the sedentary desk-bound lifestyle. By bringing together the public and private sectors, it aims to promote a healthier Uganda, foster a more robust ICT sector, and build a dynamic community.

“This victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team,” he said. “Participating in this tournament has not only strengthened our team spirit but also reinforced our commitment to the ICT sector’s growth and development. Ason Kaswara netted the decisive goal in the 34th minute of an entertaining game filled with missed opportunities as Kyaka’s run in the tournament was brought to an end.
Kyaka started the match on a strong note with Frank Asiimwe showcasing his skills early on. Despite their spirited performance, Kyaka couldn’t convert their dominance into much-needed goals.
The game played under challenging weather conditions due to a heavy downpour saw moments of high drama. Thomas Mugisa, making his tournament debut, posed a constant threat to Ntoroko. His shout for a penalty in the 81st minute after a challenge from Ntoroko defender Michael Bwamble was waved away by the referee.

Ntoroko County Member of Parliament, Gerald Rwemulikya, praised his team for their resilience and performance. “Kyaka was at home and they created many chances. This was our first time playing at Humura playground, but we managed to get a well-deserved win. I want to congratulate my players and wish them luck in the next stage,” Rwemulikya said.
Kyaka thus became the fourth team to be eliminated after Kitagwenda, Kibaale, and Mwenge North.

In a high-stakes match at the Ntara Primary School playground, defending champions Mwenge South were held by Kitagwenda to a 1-1 draw but secured their place in the semifinals of the MTN Tooro Masaza Cup.
Kitagwenda, who needed a decisive win to stay in the tournament, started strong. From the outset, they looked the more likely to score, applying relentless pressure on Mwenge South’s defence. Despite their efforts, the first half ended goalless.
The second half saw a shift in momentum with Mwenge South, needing only a draw to advance, dominating possession but struggling to break through Kitagwenda’s defence. However, in the 67th minute, Shariff Ahuura found the back of the net, giving Mwenge South a crucial lead.
Kitagwenda, fighting for survival in the tournament, responded ten minutes later. A long cross from defender Fred Kusiima was converted by Confort Atuhaire, leveling the score and reigniting their hopes. Despite a valiant effort, Kitagwenda couldn’t find the winning goal they desperately needed.
The draw means Mwenge South advances to the semifinals where they will face the winner between Ntoroko County and Kyaka.
Kitagwenda, on the other hand, is eliminated from the tournament. This draw marked Kitagwenda’s first point in this year’s tournament, a disappointing outcome for a team with high expectations.
“Our defense was not well organized and it cost us the 3 points which we needed to progress to the next level. We are out of this year’s tournament. Let’s go and reorganize and plan for the next year. We appreciate MTN and Tooro Kingdom for the partnership and all our fans who have supported us up to this level,” Kitagwenda official Michael Karwani said.,
In a previous match, Kitagwenda suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burahya at the Kyembogo Datic Playground, which meant they needed a 3-0 victory in their final group stage game to have any chance of advancing. This defeat, combined with the draw against Mwenge South, sealed their fate in this year’s tournament.
As the Tooro Kingdom MTN Masaza Cup 2024 progresses, Mwenge South’s journey continues as they aim to defend their title, while Kitagwenda looks to regroup and come back stronger next year.
The 2024 Olympic Games will take centre stage from July 27 to August 11 in the French capital Paris and other cities.

There are 12 first-time Olympians in Uganda’s team including rising sprinter Tarsis Orogot, swimmers Gloria Muzito and Jesse Ssengozi, marathoners Rebbecca Cheptegei, Victor Kiplangat and Andrew Rotich Kwemoi, cyclist Charles Kagimu, long-distance runners Belinda Chemutai, Annet Chelangat, Joy Cheptoyek, and Martin Kiprotich, and steeplechaser Leonard Chemutai.
Cheptegei, a gold medalist at the last Olympics, will lead Uganda’s medal hunt along with Jacob Kiplimo, who will compete in 5000m & 10000m.
Kiplangat has been in fine form on the road over the past couple of years winning the marathon gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and last year’s world championships. He, too, holds Uganda’s medal hopes.
Peruth Chemutai, a gold medalist in Tokyo, will be looking to defend her crown in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Chemutai has run a world-leading time in the event this season and will fancy her chances in Paris.

KIU Rangers are through to the semifinals of the National Basketball League Playoffs.
Last year’s finalist swept aside Miracle Ravens following a 68-51 win in Game 2 played at YMCA on Saturday afternoon.
Julius Lutwama’s charges led the opening quarter 13-8 but by halftime, they were up by 11 (31-20) and the writing was on the wall.
Despite competing under the sun and winning the third quarter 20-19, the Ravens were in a hole so deep and ran out of steam playing catch up as they were limited to 11 fourth-quarter points and ultimately knocked out.
Susan Amito (16 points, 10 rebounds), Winfred Akello (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Hanifah Namuli (10 points) notched double-digit scores for the Ravens in a losing effort.
On the other end, Mary Amaniyo matched a game-high 16 points and pulled down as many rebounds to lead the surge for KIU. Sharon Kirabo (15), Ines Kanyamunza (14) and Rachael Nanyonga (10) came in handy.
Rangers now await the series winner between UCU Lady Canons and Magic Stormers. Lady Canons lead the series 1-0 following their narrow win on Saturday.
