Uganda has announced it’s withdrawal from the inaugural World Mountain Running Nations Cup due to financial constraints.
Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) had earlier selected a national team of eight athletes (4 women/4 men) during the recent 2021 National Mountain Running Championships in Kapchorwa.
According to a statement released by UAF Public Secretary Namayo Mawerere, Uganda will not send a team this term despite dominating “the World Mountain Running Championships from 2008-2018.”
The Pearl has claimed 6 gold medals, 5 silver, 6 bronze at the men’s individual level and 1 gold medal respectively in the women category between those years.
Meanwhile 4 team gold medals have been won from 2013 – 2018.
The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed the dates for the Women’s U20 Championship.
The tournament to be hosted by Uganda will be played from 28th October to 10th November 2021.
CECAFA Executive Director, Auka Gecheo, confirmed the development.
“The Football Federation in Uganda has confirmed that they are ready to host the event during those dates and we are now waiting for further confirmation from teams,” said Gecheo as quoted by Cecafa website.
The tournament has been hanging in balance given the COVID-19 situation in Uganda and at one time seemed like it would be cancelled.
Gecheo adds that besides Somalia and Sudan, the rest of the other CECAFA Members are expected to take part.
Uganda, Ethiopia, and Tanzania will see this as a timely opportunity to fine-tune for their respective teams for the second round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.
Uganda eliminated Kenya 10-3 on aggregate and will face South Africa in December.
Uganda Premier League newcomers Gaddafi Football Club head coach Abdul Mubarak Wamboya has set his target for their maiden top-flight season.
The 2021-22 season is slated to kick off this Friday, but Gaddafi will be in action on Sunday against Busoga United at Kyabazinga Stadium in Bugembe.
Wamboya was officially unveiled earlier this week as the new head coach and the former Onduparaka FC coach couldn’t hide his delight.
“I’m happy to be part of the Soldier Boys and we are very set for the season. The morale in the camp is boosted and the boys are ready,” Wamboya said.
On their first attempt, Gaddafi earned promotion to the Uganda Premier League following their 2-0 victory against Proline in the FUFA Big League Playoffs Final played at Fufa Technical Center in Njeru on 17th August.
Wamboya has set a target of finishing among the top ten teams in their maiden season.
“Our target is to finish among the top ten but also to acquire that will make this possible,” Wamboya added.
Wamboya will be assisted by Hassan Zungu, who was head coach in their promotional season while Frank Ssebagala Kisitu will serve as the goalkeeping coach.
Striker Juliet Nalukenge has been called up to the Uganda Senior Women’s National Team (Crested Cranes) ahead of Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) Qualifiers.
Nalukenge who now plies her trade with Apollon Ladies FC in Cyprus and two other players from the U20 Women’s National Team (Shakira Nyinagahirwa and Hadijah Nandago) are now part of the provisional squad.
The trio was initially not part of the squad of 27 summoned on Monday but they have since joined the team that starts training on Wednesday at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.
Nalukenge was earlier supposed to move back to Cyprus after helping Uganda eliminate Kenya in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.
Immediately after the game on Friday last week where she scored a stunning free kick, Nalukenge travelled to Entebbe International Airport only to be told her Visa had expired.
Uganda will face Ethiopia on 20th October at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende and then a return leg in Bahir Dar six days later.
