Ugandan athlete Winnie Nanyondo was very fortunate to progress to the women’s 1500m semi-final after she finished 7th in Heat 3 with 4:03.81.

Winnie was in the face of trouble having failed to make the desired top 6 places but managed to squeeze into the next fastest 6 to qualify.

Her nemesis Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia won the heat with 4:02.68 while Kenyan Winnie Chebet crossed the finish line second with a season-best of 4:03.12.

Nanyondo who is featuring in her third championships after London 2017 and Doha 2019, led earlier on but she slowed down, gradually losing her lead in the heat.

Later today, Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai will race in Heat 2 of the women’s 3000m steeplechase at 8:50 pm EAT.

Other Ugandans Stella Chesang plus Mercyline Chelangat will race in the women’s 10000m final at 10:20 pm EAT.

Peter Maru has been busy this over several distances already. He ran the 10 km Road Valencia in Spain and posted 27:58 finishing 6th.

He also ran the 5000m in Grosseto, Italy and posted 13:08.89 making 2nd, a podium place. Still in the same country, he won the 1500m in Brescia posting 3:41.29.

Later he also featured at the Oslo Diamond League where he crossed the tape 8th over the 5000m distance in 13:07.42.

Ugandans Fred Musobo has previously won Gold medals at the 2015 WMRA World Mountain Running Championships in the Welsh town of Betws-y-Coed.

Fred Musubo won in 49:00 over the 13km course, one of his re-known honours.

Stephen Kissa produced a noteworthy performance to finish second behind Joshua Cheptegei over 5000m at his national championships in 2015.

His breakthrough was when he won selection for the six-strong Ugandan team at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships held on home soil in Kampala.
