Uganda has sent five athletes to represent the country at the FISU Aveiro 2022 World University Cross Country Championships in Portugal scheduled for 12th March.

The five are Emmanuel Otim, Brian Wangwe, and Sam Cheptegei from Makerere University, as well as Dismas Yeko and Knight Aciro from Ndejje University who are joined by their Coach Faustin Kiwa from Bugema and team manager Brian Nsubuga to make the delegation for the games.

Aciro, the only lady on the team, who will compete as an individual wants to run under 35 minutes, which she believes will win her a medal. She ran 35.51 in the 10km at the National Cross Country Championship in Tororo last month.

“I’m very determined to win a medal because I have been performing well in the national cross country events, so I have that hope that I will come back with something. I also have high hopes in the whole team and I know we shall make it,” she said at the flag-off.

Otim, the team captain, is equally confident of the group. “We have been involved in various training, and hard work always pays. We have been eagerly waiting for the event to happen since last year and we are a strong team but we have to invoke the Lord because he has the final say.

“Uganda has been winning things on the world scene and we are drawing inspiration from that and I believe we shall win something; we are in good shape,” he stated.

Ugandan long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei started his 2022 season with victory in Cannes, France after he crossed the tape in a French all-comers record on Sunday.

The 25 year old ran 26.49 to defeat Kenya’s Samuel Habtom 27.51 and fellow countryman Abel Sikowo who came third, posting in 27.58.

This was Cheptegei’s first 2022 race having last turned up in August last year when he won a 2-mile race in Oregon.

“Happy to see where I stand. It’s great to start my season with a World Lead. This gives me confidence for my track season,” he told NN Running Team.

Over 10 km on the road, the Ugandan has run 26:38, which was, at one time, a world record.

Today it is the second best performance in the world of all time (behind the 26:24 from Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto in 2020).

Ugandan long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei has arrived in France the Cannes 10 km road race on March 6.

Cheptegei confirmed participation in this event about a week ago and has since embarked getting himself fit for the race.

He last ran a 10K road race in 2019 in Valencia where he posted 26:38 beating his all his competition.

On arrival, Cheptegei posted on his social media; “Cannes, I’m here!!! #Silverback🦍..”

The 25-year-old wants to use the race to prepare for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham between July 28 and August 8.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Ali Chebures and Police’s Mercyline Chelangat won the 2022 male and female respective 21 KM Source of the Nile Marathon in Jinja on Sunday, 27th February.

Chebures clocked 1:02:00 to add to the recently won National Cross Country title in Tororo.
Police’s Abel Chebet (1:02:04) and another UWA runner Geofrey Kusuro (1:02:06) were second and third respectively.

I am happy that God has given me yet this chance again to add this race and am humbled to be the winner. Now my focus turns to Commonwealth Games qualification since my target is to win a gold medal for Uganda in Birmingham come July.

Like Chebures, Chelangat had also registered success in the National Cross Country Championship.

She clocked 1:11:52 to win the competitive race ahead of UWA’s Sarah Chelengat (1:12:12).
Another UWA runner Dorren Chesang was third with an improved 1:12:59.

In 2021, Chesang had won the female race with a time of 1:13:05.

I am determined and focused and that has kept me moving. My performance in the 2020 Olympic games was not good but I’m back and certainly I will compete to win a medal in 2022 Commonwealth games which is not a dream just because I have done it before.

The half marathon drew a mammoth attendance with 155 runners (123 male) and 32 females.
Current world record holder Jacob Kiplimo alongside the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth gold medalist Moses Kipsiro keenly followed the runners on a Boda Boda as they cheered on.

“Uganda has got abundant talent and I have witnessed it as I followed the runners from start to finish. I am optimistic Uganda will do well in Oregon and Birmingham,” Kiplimo.

Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) next event on the 2022 calendar is the first Track and Field event on 5th March at Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) runner Ali Chebures has switched focus to the Commonwealth Games after winning the 2022 Source of the Nile Marathon.

Chebures clocked 1:02:00 to top the field in the 21km race held in the eastern city of Jinja. Police’s Abel Chebet (1:02:04) and another UWA runner Geofrey Kusuro (1:02:06) were second and third respectively.

The 29-year-old, also a winner National Cross Country title in Tororo, says his focus is now on qualifying for the Commonwealth Games 2022.

“I am happy that God has given me yet this chance again to add this race and I am humbled to be the winner. Now my focus turns to Commonwealth Games qualification since my target is to win a gold medal for Uganda in Birmingham come July,” he said after victory in Jinja.

The Commonwealth Games will be held from 28th July to 8th August 2022 in Birmingham, England.

The next event on the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) calendar is the first Track & Field Trials on Saturday, 5th March at Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Source of the Nile Marathon | Top 5

Olympian Mercyline Chelangat claimed the 2022 Source of the Nile Marathon victory in the women’s category on Sunday, February 27 in Jinja.

The Uganda Police athlete clocked 1:11:52 to win the competitive race ahead of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) duo of Sarah Chelengat (1:12:12) and defending champion Dorren Chesang (1:12:59).

The 24-year-old had also won the National Cross Country Championship a couple of weeks ago in Tororo.

It should be noted that Chesang won the Marathon in 2021 with a time of 1:13:05.

“I am determined and focused and that has kept me moving. My performance in the 2020 Olympic games was not good but I’m back and certainly, I will compete to win a medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games,” Chelangat said in the aftermath of the win.

Next up on the athletics federation calendar is the first Track and Field event on Saturday, 5th March at Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Legendary Kenyan long distance Eliud Kipchoge has tipped Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo to have a big future in athletics following his triumph at the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon.

Kiplimo clocked 57:56 to defeat a field of elite athletes having registered a split of 13:23 for 5km and then going through 10km in 26:56 – on target for a sub-57:00 half marathon.

The 21-year-old world half marathon champion, who finished third in the 10,000m and fifth in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympics last year is now on Kipchoge’s lips.

“I have watched Jacob, he is a good runner and a great lad,” Kipchoge told New Vision Sport.

“I followed his performance in Dubai on Saturday morning and thought, oh he is so talented. He is a very mature kid. It will be interesting to see how he continues to develop.

“Jacob has a lovely shape, attitude, speed, endurance, power and determination about him for a future full marathon icon,” the world’s greatest marathoner said of Kiplimo.

On top of breaking the course record in Dubai over the weekend, Kiplimo is still the fastest man in half marathon, a milestone he achieved two months ago in EDP Lisbon meet with 57:31.

Ugandan long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei has confirmed his participation in the Cannes 10 km road race on March 6.

The Olympic champion in the 5,000m in Tokyo last year and world champion in the 10,000m in 2019, will be running his race of the 2022 season.

The event will be organized as part of the half-marathon scheduled in the Riviera city. On this occasion, Cheptegei will launch its 2022 season

Cheptegei currently holds the world records for the 5,000m (12:35:36, since August 2020) and the 10,000m (26:11:00, since October 2020).

“I am happy to return to the French Riviera to start off my 2022 season,”Cheptegei wroye on his social media.

“It’s been two and a half years since the last time I run 10km on the road so will be exciting to see where I am at the moment.”

Cheptegei last ran a 10K road race in 2019 in Valencia where he posted 26:38 beating his all his competition.

Ugandan long distance runners Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo will not take part in the National Cross Country championship due February 12 in Tororo.

The Olympics 2020 medalists Cheptegei and Kiplimo will be a no show as the latter has the Ras Al Khaimah also known as the RAK half marathon in the United Arab Emirates to race.

Kiplimo, also the official world half marathon record holder will run in the UAE on Saturday 19.

Cheptegei is also preparing for his first international race since running at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

“He would have loved to run in Tororo but we are solely focused on his international competitive event after such a long time,” coach Addy Ruiter told Vision Sports.

The events in the Eastern part of the country will however be graced by 3000 metres steeplechase Olympics gold medalist Peruth Chemutai, Sarah Chelangat and Felix Chemonges.

Others set to run on the weekend include Ronald Musagala, Halima Nakaayi, and Winnie Nanyondo.

Ugandan long distance runner Jacob Kiplimo’s World Half Marathon record has been ratified by World Athletics.

The 21-year old’s milestone was set on 21 November when he clocked 57:31 at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon.

Kiplimo claimed victory in his race by more than two minutes to trim off one second from the previous world record.

Kenya’s Kibiwott Kandie was previous owner when he ran 57:32, obliterating the record before on 6 December 2020.

Kiplimo put himself in the best position of breaking the record when he reached the 10km point in 27:05.

He was well on schedule to break the record and his 15km split time of 40:27 was the fastest ever recorded for the distance.

Commenting on the ratification, Kiplimo said, “Officially a world record holder like the best athletes!..”

Kiplimo is the only Ugandan to ever hold the record and the second holder to run a sub-58 Half Marathon in the 21 century.
