Kassim Ouma’s homecoming fight with Kenyan Rayton Okwiri on Boxing Day was washed out.
The anticipated fight at the Hockey Grounds Lugogo was set to be Ouma’s first fight in Uganda in over 20 years.
The ‘Rumble in Kampala’ had been set to take place at the Cricket Oval but later moved to the Hockey Grounds at the eleventh hour.
With the changes along came some disorganization with undercard fights getting underway up of 10:00 pm.
The main fight between Ouma and Okwir had its ring walk late at nearly 3:00 am and shortly after the heavens opened up.
Statement From Fight Promoter Steven Ssembuuya
We would like to take this opportunity to first of all thank all fight fans, our sponsors and the fighters.
As 12 Sports Rounds we did everything to put up the biggest boxing event in the region including flying in the best boxers in Africa and world and their coaches (total 9 people); some advanced purses in form of airtickets for extra people in the case of Rayton Okwiri as well as paid accommodation for all of them.
We feel disappointed that the event didn’t go as planned and I know each of the fans that paid to watch and the boxers that didn’t fight feel the same.
We had to make a late decision either to postpone the event or switch the event to another venue.
We did switch and this came with several challenges including heavy downfalls as the Kassim Ouma vs Rayton Okwiri was about to happen means also 2 other big fights didn’t happen., issues with Security and KCCA.
On the issue of Rayton Okwiri not wanting to fight before having his purse, you have to look at the contract we signed with him. But still had managed to pay some advance before the fight as requested by him inform of airtickets.
Unless you are new in boxing, this is not the first time boxing has been caught up in this kind of predicament. Cancellations, postponements and last-minute date and venue changes are commonplace, even though they seem to not be as prevalent as in years past.
Just this year and in the past we have seen it happen, Harper vs Ajagba, Curtis walking out of the ring immediately the sound of the bell went, David Haye vs Tony Bellow 2, David Parker vs Chisora, Canelo vs GGG, Costessey Sheilds vs Marsall, Jake Paul vs Hasmin Rahman, Chris Eubank vs Connor Benn and this all happened when the fans had bought tickets and the events actually sold out.
As 12 Sports Rounds we have given the fans some of the biggest and best boxing shows in the region this year and will continue to aim for the best and one of the reasons professional boxing is being talked about. And we are proud of it.
In our next solely promoted event, WE WILL LET THE FANS PAY HALF THE PRICE FOR THE TICKETS IN COMPENSATION.
Thank you fight fans, thank you UPBC, thank you the fighters and thank you our sponsors.
Uganda’s prized kickboxer Moses Golola “of Uganda” continued his rich superiority in the sport over domestic opponents.
Golola beat Hamza Keya aka “General Fungu” 2-1 in a split decision 49-46, 47-48 and 50-45 on Boxing Day.
The K1-style fight was held at the Akamwesi Gardens, Kyebando along Gayaza Road on 26th December 2022.
The two fighters completed the five rounds that witnessed aggression, exchange of powerful punches, kicks, knees and clinching.
Golola, in the red corner, managed to bring down his opponent more than thrice on a slippery canvas much to the applause of the ecstatic crowd.
“I promised my fans a great fight and it was,” Golola said in the aftermath.
“Fungu was also determined and he is a great fighter. I hit him hard on the legs to weaken him. The surface was also too slippery and I had to change my tactics and strategy.
“I thank all my sponsors and partners, coaches, fans, media and the management.”
On the same night and venue, Uganda Boxing Federation completed the inaugural season of the Boxing Champions League.

In this line of duty, there can only be one champion. I have been training hard in the hills and mountains. I am more than ready to beat up General Fungu. He has been my partner in training and I always look at him as a mere stepping stone.
Moses “Of Uganda” Golola, Kickboxer-cum-boxer
Keya feels Golola is all talk and no action;
Golola is beatable and I will be beat him too. He lost to South Sudanese Majok recently and I crushed Majok sometime back. I know all his weaknesses and I will dethrone him.

Sports categories of Athletics and Boxing have continued to dominate as Uganda’s major success stories in the Commonwealth Games.
To put it into perspective, Uganda has won medals at the stage only in athletics and boxing categories from the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games.
Jacob Kiplimo was the star of Uganda’s show, winning 2 gold medals in the men’s 5000m and 10,000m finals.
Victor Kiplangat also secured his gold in the men’s marathon to make it three, followed by two bronze medals by ladies Peruth Chemutai and Teddy Nakimuli.
Chemutai won the women’s 3000m steeplechase while Nakimuli claimed the women’s light flyweight medal despite losing to Northern Ireland boxer Carly McNaul unanimously on all five judges’ scorecards.
These milestones marked an improving performance of female athletes as this was the first time two ladies won medals for Uganda at the events.
Uganda’s Ruth Kyalisima and Dorcus Inzikuru were the only female winners to ever walk away with medals before Teddy and Chemutai.
Kyalisima won silver in the 1982 Brisbane games in the women’s 400m hurdles final while Inzikuru won Gold in the 2006 Melbourne games in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase final.
Overall, Uganda’s success took her fourth on the Africa medal tally table with 5 medals, behind Kenya (16), South Africa (27), and Nigeria (33).
