Match Summary | Uganda vs. Italy
The Cricket Cranes picked up a seven-wicket win against Italy for their second win at the ICC Cricket Challenge League B tournament.
It was a game of significant magnitude for Uganda who had given up first position to Hong Kong but with the Asians taking on Jersey who was in 3rd place, it meant that they had to get a better result than Uganda to keep the top place.
Italy won the toss and elected to bat first but the tone of their run was set back with the first ball of the game with Riazat Ali Shah bowling Nicholai Smith off the first delivery of the day.
In the second over, Cosmas Kyewuta trapped Manpreet Singh LBW leaving Italy railing at 3/2 and they were never able to recover from that poor start.
Nicholas Mailolo (28) and Crishan Kalugamage (31) tried to move the score along but a lack of partnerships never allowed the Italians to put one a good total, and in the end, they folded for 120 all out in 36.3 overs.
Brian Masaba made very intelligent bowling changes as well to make sure that the Italians don’t get comfortable for a big total. The wickets were shared by Henry Ssenyondo (2/36), Dinesh Nakrani (2/25), and Cosmas Kyewuta (2/32).
In the chase, Emmanuel Hasahya threw away his wicket very early as he tried to charge Gareth Berg and Simon Ssesazi (15) failed to convert but a second-wicket partnership of 52 between Ronak Patel (23) and Kenneth Waiswa (35 not out) took the game away from the Italians with Dinesh Nakrani (25) knocking off the balance to ensure the result for Uganda.
It is a morale-boosting win for Uganda who will face familiar enemy Kenya in their final game of the tournament on Sunday.
Hong Kong was not able to win against Jersey losing by 55 runs and that result meant that Uganda go back to the top of the table, a point ahead of Hong Kong on 14 while Jersey continue their good form in the second leg picking up their 4th win in as many games.
Jersey will take on Bermuda in their final game and that could mean them picking up a clean sweep in the Kampala leg of the qualifiers.
Uganda Beach Soccer National Team (Sand Cranes) has learnt their opponents in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2022.
As per the draws conducted on Friday in the Mozambique capital Maputo, the Sand Cranes will face Comoros.
The first leg will be played between 22nd-24th July in Comoros while the return leg will happen between 5th-7th August in Uganda with the winner on aggregate qualifying for the final tournament.
The 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations will be held from 21st to 30th October 2022 in Maputo, Mozambique.
This will be an attempt for Uganda to return to the coveted tournament, having played at the previous one last year in Senegal.
The Sand Cranes reached the semifinals on their debut.
Victoria Pearls’ Vice Captain Janet Mbabazi has continued to impress this year, amassing another half century as she guided Amasimbi Hawks to victory in the Rwanda Women’s Elite League.
Mbabazi picked up the Player of Match award on Tuesday after a well-paced half century (53 off 54 not out), Hawks winning the game by 2 runs over Ingabo Knights.
Former Zimbabwean international Chigumbura Elton handed her the award and she has continued to make in roads with her team, picking a total of 5 wickets and 95 runs from 4 games.
Janet has since been selected to feature in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) Africa Select XI that will face Commonwealth Select XI.
The finals of the Rwanda Women’s Elite League will unfold on Friday 24th June as Amasimbi Hawks face Ingabo Knights.
Uganda Cricket Cranes head coach Lawrence Mahatlane wants his side to keep doing the simple things right as they return to action on Friday against Italy.
The Cricket World Cup Challenge League B event at Lugogo Oval will present another opportunity for Uganda to stay atop after losing to Jersey and Hong Kong en route victory over Bermuda.
“Looking forward to the game and ensuring we keep working on out process. With our destiny still I’m our own hands, it is important we keep doing the simple things right,” he told MTN Sports.
The last time Italy faced Uganda, the latter won by 38 runs. Bilal Hassan who has since been sidelined due to fitness challenges picked 5 wickets for just 27 runs in 8.4 overs.
Uganda without Shahzad Ukani, Roger Mukasa as the only major changes from the squad that played then – will look to a near perfect start from Simon Ssesazi and Ronak Patel who have impressed so far.
With one game in hand, Uganda is still top of the table with 8 matches played, 6 wins and 2 losses that came on home soil. Contenders Hong Kong follow with just one point behind Uganda.
The home crowd was finally treated to long awaited success after the Cricket Cranes secured their first win in the ICC World Cup Challenge League B round two.
Uganda had lost their first games to Jersey and Hong Kong but when captain Brian Masaba lost the toss to Bermuda, it was familiar luck once again.
Lawrence Mahatlane’s boys won by 8 wickets on Tuesday at Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala to regain the lead on the log.
Bermuda opted to bat and were bowled out for 95, with Dalin Richardson the top scorer with 15, Kamau Leverock 14, Zeko Burgess with 13, and Amri Ebbin 12.
Frank Akankwasa 2-0, Dinesh Kumar 2-17 and Riazat Ali Shah 2-23 were the damagers-in-chief before Simon Ssesazi’s 50 not out, Ronak Patel and Kenneth Waiswa 19 runs each eased the win.
