FUFA Big League | Wednesday Result

Lugazi Football Club registered a 3-0 well deserved victory against Ndejje University in the FUFA Big League at the Lugazi Stadium.

Sam Ssemugugu scored two before Derrick Mwanje added the other to give Lugazi a perfect start to the 2023/24 campaign.

It was the second loss for Ndejje University who earlier lost to Kaaro Karungi 4-3 at the Arena of Visions in Luwero.

In the sixth minute, Sam Semugugu set the game ablaze with a great finish to give the home side the lead.

Ndejje University was eager to restore parity but ended up being so anxious only to witness their strikes often finding the sky.

Six minutes past the hour mark, Ssemugugu scored his second of the day guiding home a loose ball in the area after Ndejje University goalkeeper Paul Akweny fumbled with the ball.

In the 90th minute, Mwanje added salt to Ndejje’s wounds with an easy tap in at the far post capitalizing on Mubarak Mitala’s delivery.

Next up, Ndejje will visit Police FC at Kavumba on Sunday, October 8 while Lugazi lock horns with Calvary FC at Midigo on Sunday October 8.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed that the 2027 AFCON edition will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The confirmation was made public by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during the Executive meeting held on Wednesday in Cairo, Egypt.

The East Africa PAMOJA bid came on top of the list that had South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Senegal.

For starters, this will be the first time the continental showpiece has come to the CECAFA region.              

This will be the first time, the AFCON tournament will be hosted by three different countries.

The PAMOJA Bid represents unity in the region and gives hope to reignite the football spirit that has met several challenges in the past years.

The East Africa region will have the maiden opportunity to host the biggest football tournament on the continent.

Uganda Women’s National Football team, Crested Cranes, suffered a major blow after their journey to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

After being part of last year’s continental tournament, Crested Cranes were seeking a third appearance at the grand stage but Algeria halted the dream.

Uganda was held by Algeria in a one-all draw at Stade Olympic D’oran in a night fiesta on Tuesday.

Three minutes into the game, Naima Bouhani gave the hosts a lead through a simple finish at the far post.

Uganda fought back in search for a leveller but it could not come in the first 45 minutes.

Six minutes past half an hour mark, Fauzia Najjemba pulled back one from the spot after she was fouled in the dangerous zone.

Due to the 2-1 loss in the first leg at Njeru, Uganda’s journey came to an end retrieving with a 3-2 victory for Algeria on aggregate.

Algeria will face Burundi in the next and final stage.

Lugazi Football Club seeks to make a resounding opening to the FUFA Big League 2023/24 campaign.

After not taking part in matchday one, Lugazi will host Ndejje University FC at the ever-green Lugazi Stadium.

Speaking to the club media, Lugazi head coach William Kyeswa revealed that they have duly prepared and cannot wait to stage a perfect start.

“We have had a good preseason. We want to start on a good note and give the fans what is best for all of us,” he said.

“We are ready for the challenge. All players are in good shape and am sure they will put up a much-deserved performance.

“We are not hiding what our ambition is, we want to fight for promotion, so we need to make that clear from the start,” he added.

However, the soft-spoken gaffer Kyeswa called upon the fans to turn up in large numbers so that they could support the club to achieve its set target.

“We call upon all fans to turn up in big numbers. We know how important our fans are for the home games. So their presence will give us the much-needed ambience to enjoy the game,” he concluded.

In their maiden Big League season, Lugazi finished fifth with 44 points and this season they have made it clear that the target is promotion to the top tier.

Mbale Heroes and Kataka FC shared spoils in a goalless draw in the FUFA Big League at Mbale Municipal Stadium on Tuesday.

Either side had a chance to take the lead in the game but none found the back of the net in the tight encounter that pulled a fair crowd.

In the eighth minute, Isaaya Sabiiti came close to the game but his powerful effort went inches above the frame.

Junior Zaake was fouled at the edge of the box, and Kataka’s fans protested calling for a penalty but the centre referee stood to the first decision calling for a freekick.

In the 24th minute, goalkeeper Solomon Okello denied Akram Muzanyi who headed Abu Sentongo’s delivery from close range got on target.

The hosts made three changes at ago. Gerald Ogweti, Shafick Kwikiriza, and Brian Wamakale were called onto the field of play.

As Muzanyi, Simon Okot, and Blaise Nkolo were called to rest after being in action for an hour.

Latif Ssenkubuge nearly gave Kataka the lead late but his bouncing header went wide of the frame narrowly.

Goalkeeper Okello made a stunning save to deny Kwikiriza in the last attempt of the game.

Next, Mbale Heroes will travel to visit Kigezi Homeboys at Kabale Municipal while Kataka will host Blacks Power in Mbale. Both games will be played on Sunday, October 1.

Uganda Women’s National Football Team, Crested Cranes, face Algeria in a life-saving clash in the ongoing WAFCON qualifiers.

The two sides will face off in a tight clash at Stade Olympic D’Oran in a night football fiesta.

The first leg held at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru ended 2-1 in favour of Algeria who now have an upper hand in the tie.

Imane Chabel and Habiba Karchouni scored for Algeria while Crested Cranes assistant head coach Fauzia Najjemba pulled back one for Uganda.

While talking in a pre-match conference, Crested Cranes coach Ayub Khalifa revealed that his troops have got all it takes to overturn the result.

“I believe the girls will do all it takes to see that we win. We have prepared well and I am confident the girls will get the job done,” he said.

Uganda is chasing a third appearance on the continent’s grand stage as far as Women’s football is concerned.

The aggregate winner will play the victor between Burundi and Ethiopia.

The MTN Busoga Masaza Cup served the football faithful in the region with surprises in the two games that were held on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

On Saturday, Bulamogi registered a 2-0 victory against group leaders Bugweri in the ongoing Busoga Masaza Cup.

Shortly after the full-time whistle, Bulamogi head coach Yusuf Izimba told the press that the victory would drive them further after a false start.

“The win will surely inspire us going forward. We might have lost our first two games but being a young team there is a lot to put right and get better,” he said.

Bugweri’s gaffer Kenneth Kaluuba revealed that the loss suffered was due to the escalating injuries with his squad.

“Our team has been depleted due to injuries. We might have lost the game but it’s a wake-up call for us to bounce back going forward,” he noted.

The tournament will take a break for two weeks before the return of the second round.

Police FC registered a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Young Elephants FC in the FUFA Big League at Kavumba Recreation Grounds on Monday.

In the 21st minute of the game, Jimmy Oola broke the deadlock, heading in from close range to give the visitors a lead.

Daniel Jakony made a stunning clearance as he got the ball off the line to save the Cops from conceding the second.

Emmanuel Mugume had a chance to level matters before the break but his first touch in the box was heavy thus giving away possession.

Police kept pushing for an equaliser but Isaac Agogo’s troops were well-organised at the back. The first 45 minutes ended as the visitors sat in the driving seat.

At the start of the second half, Simon Peter Mugerwa made a double change as he rallied his charges to get back into the game.

Midfielder Gadafi Kacancu and forward Steven Kabuye were called off the field and were replaced by Tonny Kiwalazi and Denis Kalanzi.

Isaac Ogwang missed a spectacular close-range shot eight minutes into the second stanza.  Mugume’s free-kick was blocked back into play before George Kiryowa set up Ogwang but the forward hardly utilised the cut-clear change.

Second-half substitute Kalanzi found the back of the net to restore parity and give Police a chance to get back into the game.

With 13 minutes to end the game, Brian James Obedi was introduced in place of Isaac Ogwang.   

At the death, Police goalkeeper Davis Mutebi set up Obedi who nodded the ball home to snatch the victory late.

The victory gives Police a perfect start to the 2023/24 Big League campaign after narrowly missing out on promotion last season.

Next, Police FC will be on the road to visit Jinja North on Saturday, September 30 while Young Elephant will host Calvary on Sunday, October 1.

Bukooli Namayingo registered a 3-1 victory against Budiope in the MTN Busoga Masaza on Sunday evening.

Andrew Kisule put Budiope in the lead right away in the second minute to give the match the right start. Dan Mubaale restored parity for Bukoli Nayingo two minutes later.

It was an end-to-end encounter but no side took a whole control of the first 45 minutes.

Two minutes past the hour mark, Douglas Soita nodded home to give Bukooli Namayingo the lead, sending the home crowd to party.

Late in the game, Budiope conceded an own goal to complicate their fight into the game.

Budiope’s gaffer Wycliffe Mudoola stressed that the team will bounce back in the coming games.

“The game was tough and tight. We tried to fight but failed. We shall bounce back in our next matches,” he said.

The victory takes Bukooli Namayingo to the summit of the group with three victories, posting nine points.

FUFA Big League | Sunday Results

Blacks Power edged Onduparaka in a 1-0 narrow win in the FUFA Big League on Sunday at Aki Bua Stadium, Lira.

Fred Mulumba’s second-half goal was the difference between the two newbies in the second tier of Ugandan football.

It was a perfect start for the Lira-based side after taking maximum points from the Caterpillars.

Both sides got sight of the goal in close chances but the opening 45 minutes came to an end without anyone seeing the back of the net.

Innocent Maduka and Paul Oonyu had lively debuts with Black Powers as they came close occasionally but Onduparaka’s defence stood firm.

Oonyu was called off the field of play and Mulumba was introduced later making a great impact on the game.

In the 78th minute, Mulumba found the back of the net in the all-important goal to award his side the deserved victory.

Both sides will seek to improve going forward as they seek to return to the top tier next season, having dropped after the end of the just-concluded campaign.

In the next matchday, Blacks Power will play against Kataka in Mbale while Onduparaka will host Kyetume in Arua. Both games will be played on Sunday, October 1.
