Uganda Revenue Authority Football Club (URA FC) further compounded Wakiso Giants’ hopes as the two sides faced off on Wednesday in Lugazi.

Kyeyune opened the scores three minutes after the hour mark after goalkeeper Samson Kirya spilt the ball into his path.

New York Red Bulls II have announced the signing of Ugandan midfielder Ibrahim Kasule to an MLS NEXT Pro contract.

“We are looking forward to adding a player like Ibrahim to the group,” Sporting Director Denis Hamlett said as quoted by the club website. “He has the qualities that we look for when deciding how to improve the current squad.”

Kasule, 18, joins Red Bulls II from Uganda Premier League side Wakiso Giants Football Club.

He had been part of Wakiso Giants since September 2020 and has consistently been one of the top performers during the 2022-23 season not only for the Purple Sharks but in the entire league. He won the “Player of the Month” award for October after scoring a goal and tallying two assists in three matches.

“Ibrahim and the skills that he can provide are going to fit right in with the squad this season,” Head Coach Ibrahim Sekagya said. “His success in Uganda at such a young age was a main factor as to why we decided to bring him in for this season.”

Kasule joins former Wakiso Giants FC teammate Frank Ssebuufu for the current MLS NEXT Pro season.

Prior to Uganda Cranes’ AFCON Qualifiers match against Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, there were multiple media reports that the game was a win or bounce for head coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojević.

A 90th-minute winner from Rogers Mato gave the Cranes all three points that keep Uganda in the hunt for a place in the next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

As a result, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has kept faith in Micho to guide Uganda through the rest of the campaign.

The redevelopment was confirmed during a press conference held on Thursday at Fufa Complex in Mengo.

“We don’t want to make rushed decisions. As FUFA, we are giving ourselves time and we will make an assessment after the qualification campaign,” Fufa President Moses Magogo said.

“As Ugandans, we may not be happy about the results the National Team is getting but we must also face the reality. Transition of teams is a reality and the only route you can take to get back.

“If you look at the team that played against Tanzania, 13 of them are products of the FUFA Juniors League we started in 2015. We must give them the necessary support and hope the results can get better,” added Magogo.

The Serbian tactician returned on 27th July 2021 and has been in charge of the team for 29 matches managing to win 8, drawn 11 and lost 10.

Uganda Cranes have beaten Taifa Stars of Tanzania in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Rogers Mato scored the lone goal of the match in the 90th minute of the game after being played through by fellow substitute Farouk Miya.

The win puts the Cranes back in the contest for a slot at the Africa Cup of Nations in Group F whose leaders Algeria have already qualified.

Uganda is now level on points (4) with Tanzania and there are still two matches to play for both sides as they have to face Niger and Algeria.

How the match unfolded

The hosts started the Tuesday night tie on the front foot putting the Cranes under early pressure. In the first chance of the game, Simon Msuva left Aziz Kayondo for dead but his shot was dealt with by Jamal Salim Magoola at the near post.

There were no other meaningful chances created by either side in the first as the majority of the play was in the middle of the park and the hosts enjoyed a lion’s share of the possession.

Isma Mugulusi who started in the place of Farouk Miya was lively in the first half but was not given space to operate by Tanzania’s defence. In one of the opportunities the attacking midfielder got on the ball, he nearly played Joseph Ochaya through but the winger was flagged for offside.

Abdul Suleiman had a shot saved by Jamal but the forward had been waived for offside in one of the chances Taifa Stars got late in the half while Timothy Awany denied Tanzania’s captain to have a clear header at goal.

During the first half, the match was however delayed by more than 30 minutes as halftime approached because of a floodlights problem at the stadium.

The opening 45 minutes would end goalless.

The Cranes played the second half with more urgency and got early opportunities. Ochaya saw his header deflected for a corner kick and moments later, he picked out Mugulusi with a cross but the attacking midfielder failed to control the ball and Taifar Stars cleared their lines

Micho made changes introducing Rogers Mato and Fahad Bayo for Emmanuel Okwi and Richard Basangwa after the hour mark and later Travis Mutyaba and Farouk Miya.

With the match seemingly destined for a goalless draw, Miya threaded a sumptuous through ball that freed Mato who slotted in at the far post past goalkeeper Aisha Manula sparking wild celebrations from Uganda’s bench.

Uganda Cranes will return to action in June with a home fixture against Algeria.
