Simon Kankonde scored the winner as KCCA Football Club beat Mbarara City 2-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 Stanbic Uganda Cup.

Kankonde came off the bench and scored in the 67th minute after a good interplay with Allan Okello to send the Kasasiro to the next stage.

KCCA took an early lead through Rogers Mato inside the opening three minutes of the game but Henry Kitegenyi levelled matters for Mbarara City before the break.

But despite conceding early, Ankole Lions remained composed and compact and waited for their moment as they kept on pressing the KCCA backline and it paid off in the 36th minute through Kitegenyi, who sent in a powerful effort in the top corner thanks to a pass from Bronson Nsubuga.

After the break, Mbarara City looked lively up front with Kitegenyi and Jude Ssemugabi coming close but they were wasteful in front of goal.

However, Kankonde who replaced Brian Aheebwa made them pay as he fired a powerful shot off Okello’s beautiful pass to restore KCCA’s lead.

KCCA could have stretched the lead but Okello, Kankonde and Lwanga wasted a few more chances.

Kawempe Muslim registered their second consecutive victory in FUFA Women Super League after seeing off Makerere University WFC 2-0 on Sunday.

Shakira Nyinagahirwa and Agnes Nabukenya were on target for the Valley Warriors as they picked their fifth win of the season.

The win moved Kawempe to third on the table, level on points while defeat for Makerere University sends them to the bottom of the pile.

Kick-off was delayed after a downpour with most parts of the pitch flooded and the first-half performance from both sides was a testament to how the ground was unplayable.

The second half saw an improved performance from Kawempe. Agnes Nabukenya’s effort was kept out for a corner by She Mak goalkeeper Shadia Nankya before the breakthrough from Nyinagahirwa with about 25 minutes to play.

Moments later, Nabukenya made it two, scoring in an empty net after beating off her markers in the area including goalkeeper Nankya.

Kawempe Muslim will visit Rines WFC on Sunday, 26th March in the next game while Makerere University welcome Uganda Martyrs SS Lubaga on the same day.
