New York Red Bulls II has named former Uganda Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya as its head coach for their inaugural season in MLS Next Pro.

Sekagya will be the third Head Coach in Red Bulls II history having spent eight seasons as an Assistant Coach of the side.

“Ibrahim [Sekagya] has played a crucial role in the development of Red Bulls II in addition to his success as a player with the main club,” Sporting Director Denis Hamlett said as quoted by he club website. “We know he will continue his hard work and dedication to improve in every facet of the club,” he added.

Following his retirement from playing in 2015, Sekagya joined the Red Bulls II coaching staff for its inaugural season in USL that same year.

After seven and a half seasons as an Assistant Coach, he was named the Interim Head Coach in July last year and guided the team for the final 17 matches of the season.

“I am thrilled to continue my journey with the New York Red Bulls organization and lead New York Red Bulls II to success,” Head Coach Ibrahim Sekagya said as quoted by the club media. “I cannot wait to get this season started and show all of the work that has been done this winter to put a well-balanced squad on the pitch,” he added.

With Sekagya on the staff, Red Bulls II has seen 21 players go on to sign MLS contracts with the New York Red Bulls. Two, Tyler Adams and Aaron Long, were part of the United States Men’s National Team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He has also spent time assisting in first-team training sessions and continues to work with players on the team.

During his eight seasons with the club, Red Bulls II won 98 matches, qualified for the postseason five times, and won both the 2016 USL Cup and Regular Season Title.

Mustafa Kizza has officially returned to KCCA Football Club after parting ways. with Portugues side FC Arouca.

The left-back has signed a short-term contract with his boyhood club until the end of the current season (2022-23).

Kizza has been training with the Kasasiro for the past few weeks and played some of the club friendlies including one against Bright Stars.

Kizza kick-started his career at KCCA Soccer Academy as a teenager back in 2015 and played for the Kasasiro development side until 2016.

He was then loaned out to Maroons FC at the start of the 2016-17 season and later returned to KCCA FC in January 2017 and played for the senior team for three and a half years.

In July 2020, KCCA FC agreed with Montreal Impact to transfer fullback Mustafa Kizza for two years. He would later leave Montreal Impact in 2021 and join FC Arouca for the 2022-23 season in the Primeira Liga, Portugal.

Express Football Club progressed to the Round of 32 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup after beating Kajjansi United 2-1 at. Uganda Clays Grounds on Sunday.

Winger Joseph Akandwanaho was on target for the Red Eagles to add to Joseph Kizito’s own goal while Brian Muwayira’s late goal for the hosts turned out a consolation.

The Red Eagles could have won comfortably but were lethargic in front of goal fluffing a number of chance top of which was Marvin Oshaba’s header that hit the post.

Express lived dangerously in the closing stages of the game but managed to hang for victory and progress to the next round of the knockout tournament.

“We never took this game for granted because we know how tricky Kajjansi United is and I am pleased that we are through to the Round of 32,” a relieved Express head coach James Odoch said in the aftermath.

Meanwhile, West Nile-based Uganda Premier LLeague side Arua Hill suffered an early exit after falling to Northern Regional League side Elite FC. Normal time of the clash at Lira Integrated School ended in a one-all draw before the Regional League side won the shootout 2-1.

Western Regional League side Bushenyi Veterans held another Premier League side UPDF to a 0-0 draw at Bushenyi Stadium but the army side won the shootout 4-1.

FUFA Big League side Kitara Football Club officially unveiled Sam Ssimbwa as their new head coach.

Ssimbwa was officially unveiled on Sunday evening after Kitara’s 3-1 win over Kagadi United in a friendly played at Kigaaya Playground.

The former KCCA, URA FC, Express and Simba coach will be assisted by George Lutalo and Hamza Muwonge in the capacities of first assistant and goalkeeping coach respectively.

Simbwa replaces Mark Twinamatsiko who was relieved of his duties by the club last month and it will be his first coaching job since 2021 when he left URA.

During the same function, new players Godfrey Lwesibawa, Paul Mucureezi, Farouk Katongole and George Senkaaba were also unveiled to the fans.

Midway through the season, Kitara is top of the Big League with 31 points and Sssimbwa’s job is to oversee the side gain promotion to the Premier League.

URA Football Club has completed the signing of striker Alfred Leku.

The powerful and lanky player joins the tax collectors on a two-year deal from Zambian side Zesco United following the competition of his contract.

The forward is blessed with a physique, the ability to shield off opponents and an eye for goal.

He has previously featured for Vipers SC, Onduparaka FC, Express FC, Proline FC and Arua Hill SC.

He is the fifth player to be unveiled by URA in the midseason transfer window after Bruno Junior Bunyaga, Nicholas Kabonge, Joshua Letti Lubwama and Joseph Ssemujju.

Mbale Heroes and Wakiso Giants are through to the Round of 32 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

In a Round of 64 game played at Buhinga Stadium, WakisoGiants beat Regional League side Fort Portal Boda Boda 3-1.

Norman Ojik, Moses Aliro and Frank Ssebuufu were on target for the Purple Sharks.

The Purple Sharks will now shift their attention to the Uganda Premier League as they open the second round against KCCA on Thursday, 9th February at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium.

Four Regional League sides Mbale Heroes, Kigezi HomeBoyz, Adjumani Town Council, and Lugazi FC also progressed to the Round of 32.

Mbale Heroes beat Araka 2-0 at Mbale Stadium, and Adjumani dumped out Simba FC 4-2 through a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in normal time at Namulonge Grounds in Gayaza.

Kigezi HomeBoyz eliminated FUFA Big League side Booma FC after a 2-1 win at Kabale Municipal Stadium while Lugazi FC also edged Water 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 stalemate at UICT Grounds.

The game between Busoga United and hosts JLOS was not played after the UPL side’s Coaster broke down en route to Kitgum.

Uganda Premier League side UPDF Football Club has confirmed their new recruits in the just concluded midseason transfer window.

The new players have been training with the team and among them is experienced defender Bernard Muwanga who returns to the club for a second stint.

Muwanga first played for UPDF during the 2020-21 season and returns to action after a long period of time without a club.

He brings a lot of experience in the Army side’s defence having featured for KCCA FC, Bright Stars, and SC Villa.

Pacy winger Muwadda Mawejje also joins UPDF on a one-year deal, after ending his short spell at Rwandan side Rwamangan City, a side he joined last year in October.

The other new signings include goalkeeper Martin Senkooto on loan from Arua Hill, defender Moses Kigundu and Munir Saidi (on loan from Onduparaka).

Forward Gerald Kimuli also joins on a one-year deal from Fufa Big League side Booma FC.

At the end of the first round, UPDF were third from the bottom with 10 points from 14 games.

Uganda Premier League outfits Maroons Football Club and Gaddafi Football Club have been knocked out of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

Gaddafi suffered a 1-0 defeat at Ssaza Grounds in Mityana to Regional League side Kiyinda Boys. Joseph Ssewali struck the winner five minutes from time to give the hosts a historical win.

Meanwhile, at the Coffee Grounds in Bugolobi, Kisugu United produced another upset with a 2-1 win over Maroons.

Rogers Tabule and Bob Matovu were on target for Kisugu with the winner arriving in added time.

Of the three Uganda Premier League teams that were in action on Thursday, only Blacks Power advanced to the Round of 32 with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bukedea Central at Emokori Grounds in Bukedea.

Another upset happened in the South Western district of Kizoro as Gorilla Highland eliminated Big League side Kataka following a 2-0 win at Mashaka Playground.

Kisugu, Kyinga, Gorilla Highland, and Blacks Power have joined 11 other teams that already qualified for the Round of 32 of the Stanbic Bank Uganda Cup.

Villa, Police, Vipers, BUL, Kitara, Ndejje University, Jinja North United, Admin, Junior Eagles, Pajule Lions, and Blue Stars are the other teams already in the Round of 32.

Joseph Ssemujju has completed his move to URA Football Club on a two-year contract.

The winger joins from Tanzanian side Mbeya City following the end of his one-year contract.

Ssemujju is expected to beef up the offensive department given his ability to play on either flank as well as attacking midfielder.

The silky and talented player is aware of the responsibility and task ahead.

“I am really happy and excited about the opportunity to join URA FC.

“It’s true I have played for a number of clubs in Uganda and I have got the experience now which I will use to help the club get out from where they finished the first round from. I have been following and I know this is not where we belong because URA FC is a strong club.

“And if we coordinate well as a team as well as know our responsibility and value of putting on the URA FC jersey, we shall get back to where we belong immediately.

“My targets are clear, I want to help the club go back to where they belong and by this, I have to be on top of my game all the time I am given the opportunity and I also want to use this platform to return to the national team.”

Ssemujju has formerly played at Bul FC, SC Villa, Proline FC, Express FC and Vipers SC in Uganda.

Blacks Power Football Club has reinforced its squad with ten new players including former SC Villa and Onduparaka winger Vitalis Tabu.

The Lira-based club confirmed Tabu’s acquisition from Fufa Big League side Calvary alongside nine other players. Tabu is a journeyman who has also featured for URA FC and Bul FC

The other players on the long list of new entrants at Blacks Power in the January window include forward Gabriel Matata from South Sudan’s Altabara FC, Robert Eseru from Arua Hill FC, Joel Malle from Tooro United, and Isaac Tumusiime from Kitara FC.

Jackson Wabuleeta from Soroti City FC, goalkeeper Keneth Lukyamuzi (Tooro United), Ivan Nambaffu from Kaaro Karungi, David Omeri and striker Moses Odongo are the other new players at Blacks Power.

The club also let go of seven players including goalkeeper Muhamed Ssekeba, Stephen Othieno,  Faizo Muwawu, and Francis Onekalit among others.

Blacks Power finished the first round 12th with 11 points and are playing their maiden season in the Uganda Premier League.
