Uganda Hippos coach Jackson Mayanja has revealed his final 24-man squad travelling to Sudan for the CECAFA AFCON U20 Zonal Qualifiers.

The tournament will be played from 28th October to 11th November 2022.

The team that has only three players who were part of the 2021 Hippos squad that reached the AFCON U20 finals in Mauritania will be captained by Isma Mugulusi.

Mugulusi, Faisal Wabyoona and goalie Denis Ssenyondwa are the three surviving players on the team that flew out of the country on Wednesday morning.

Uganda is pitted in Group B along with Tanzania and Ethiopia.

They will open their title on Saturday, 29th October against Tanzania at Al Hilal Stadium then rest for six days before playing their second tie against Ethiopia on 5th November.

Sand Cranes’ dream of qualifying for the World Cup was ended on Monday after suffering a second loss at the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Mozambique.

In their final Group B game played at Vankulo Arena, Egypt swept aside the Ugandans, winning the match 6-2.

The game was a decider on who takes the second place in the group as both teams had lost to Senegal who topped the pool.

Egypt took the lead through an own goal scored by Ambrose Kigozi before Hossam Salama Ibrahim Hassan scored a brace.

Ismael Bahgat Abdelrazek, Hassane Hussein, and Moustafa Shaaban scored the other goals for Egypt.

The consolation goals for the Sand Cranes were scored by Baker Lukooya and Brian Nkuubi.

“Egypt was superior. We have only four players with a very high level, but they were not good today. The learning and lessons remain. I have worked for six weeks with this team and yet I give a positive assessment of our participation in this very well-organized competition,” Angelo Schirinzi, Uganda Sand Cranes coach said after the game.

The Sand Cranes will now face Malawi in the classification game on Wednesday to determine the fifth and sixth positions.

Uganda Hippos have learnt their group opponents at the 2022 CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers for AFCON U20 Championship that will be hosted in Sudan.

The Hippos have been pitted in Group B along with Tanzania and Ethiopia.

Uganda will kick start their journey to defend their title on Saturday, 29th October against Tanzania at Al Hilal Stadium.

They will then rest for six days before playing their second tie against Ethiopia on 5th November.

The leader from Group A will face the runners-up from group B and vice versa.

The Hippos who have now spent 12 days in a residential camp at the Cranes Paradise Hotel, Kisaasi are expected to fly out on Wednesday morning for Sudan.

Under the stewardship of Jackson Mayanja, they will be hoping to defend their title in order to return to the U20 AFCON tournament that will take place in Egypt in 2023.

The Hippos reached the AFCON U20 finals in the last edition in 2021 in Mauritania, losing to Ghana 2-0. They were under Morley Byekwaso during that tournament.

Kawempe Muslim Ladies piled more misery on troubled Rines SS with a 4-1 win.

Forward Hadijah Nandago stole the limelight with a hat trick on the day, her first in the League with the other goal for the Valley Warriors being an own goal by Rines defender Peace Aloyo.

The consolation for the visitors came from Amina Nababi.

In the other matches played on the weekend, defending champions She Corporate finally posted their first win of the season after defeating Olila High School in Soroti.

The Sharks had picked just two points in four matches before Sunday’s game. Joan Ainembabazi and Phiona Nabbumba were on target for She Corporate in the win that takes the Nakawa-based side to 7th place with 5 points.

Kampala Queens kept their perfect start intact with yet another victory on the road. The Queens edged UCU Lady Cardinals in the top-of-the-table clash played on Saturday in Mukono and Margret Kunihira’s 16th-minute strike was the difference.

Meanwhile, Lady Doves FC continued with their ascendency overcoming Asubo Gafford Ladies FC. Goals from captain Lydia Nyandera, Norah Alupo, and Olivia Babirye guided the Masindi-based side to victory.

At St. Gerald’s Stadium in Lubaga, Uganda Martyrs bounced back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Makerere University. The goals came from midfielder Kevin Nakacwa and winger Brenda Munyana.

FUFA Women Super League | Matchday Five Results

Rogers Mato was on target for the only goal of the game as KCCA Football Club beat Vipers Sports Club 1-0 at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.

Mato left Vipers’ backline static to head home Allan Okello’s cross in the fifth minute of the game, a goal that turned out the match-winner.

The match watched by a capacity crowd saw very few scoring opportunities but it was KCCA that made their intentions known early.

Tshisungu Kankonde put wide a freekick inside the opening minute of the game and four minutes later the hosts were celebrating.

Vipers struggled to create anything having set out a defensive team with five defenders despite playing what seemed like a 3-4-3 system.

While the introduction of Bright Anukani gave Vipers some grip on the midfield, Yunus Sentamu, Mbaka Kipoyi, and Milton Karisa barely did anything upfront.

In the end, KCCA held on for maximum points which is their second win of the season that lifts them to fourth in the table.

Meanwhile, Vipers drop to second from the bottom with a single point out of a possible six.

Uganda Sand Cranes started the 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations on a wrong footing after suffering a 10-1 defeat to Senegal on Saturday.

In the first game of Group B, it was always going to be a tall order for the Sand Cranes against the defending Champions Senegal.

Senegal scored through Amar Samb, Seydina Diagne, and Raoul Mendy (x2) to lead 4-0 at the end of the first period.

While the Ugandans worked collectively and defended the long ball from the Senegal players better, Seydina Diagne scored a free-style goal his second of the game.

Senegal proved too strong with Amar Samb getting his second goal, and Mamadou Sylla took charge. from there on.

Uganda’s captain Baker Luukooya scored the consolation.

Uganda plays its next game on Sunday, 23rd October 2022 against Madagascar which lost to Egypt.

“It wasn’t really a good start for us. We came into this game aware that we would be facing the defending Champions and we also expected to face difficulties and that is realistic.

“Now we have to think about our next opponents Madagascar and Egypt. We must beat these opponents to reach the semifinals,” Sand Cranes head coach Angelo Schirinzi said as quoted by Fufa.

Arua Hill Sports Club maintained their winning start to the 2022-23 Uganda Premier League season with a convincing 3-1 win over Maroons at Barifa Stadium.

Innocent Maduka, Rashid Kawawa, and Rashid Toha were on target for the Kongolo while the consolation for visiting Maroons FC came from Abraham Tusubira.

Arua Hill who defeated KCCA FC in their season opener were the better side and it took them just twelve minutes to find the breakthrough.

Kawawa’s shot deflected off Maroons defender Jacob Okao into the back of the net and the hosts had a foundation laid.

At the start of the second half, coach Charles Livingstone Mbabazi introduced Maduka in place of Samuel Ssekamatte. It took the Nigerian forward just ten minutes to double the lead for Arua Hill.

Towering defender Toha made it three for the home side, converting from the spot in the 78th minute when goalkeeper Simon Tamale fouled Kawawa in the area.

Four minutes later, Tusubira found the consolation for Maroons.

Victory takes Arua Hill to third place with six points from two games and their next fixture is away to UPDF FC.

The Prison Warders on the other hand suffered their first loss this season and dropped to fifth place with as many points. They will host KCCA FC in their next fixture.

Kampala Queens maintained their unbeaten start to the 2022-23 FUFA Women’s Super League after beating UCU Cardinal one-nil in Mukono.

Margret Kunihira netted the solitary goal of the game as title-chasing Queens picked maximum points away from home.

Facing her former side, Hassifa Nassuna played Kunihira through in the 16th minute and the winger made no mistake.

The win sees Queens maintain their impressive 100% record which extends their point gap at the top of the table to five points.

Kampala Queens are top of the log with 15 points from five games. They host Olila HS in their next fixture.

Uganda Cranes defender Bevis Mugabi came on as a substitute in Motherwell’s 4-0 loss to Celtic in the Scottish Cup at Fir Park.

Mugabi was again turning up as a substitute just like in the defeat to Rangers where he entered the fray in the 58th minute.

Motherwell replaced defender Johansen Sondre with Mugabi in the 64th minute after Motherwell had conceded from Liel Abada.

Liel loaded a left-footed shot from very close range to the centre of the goal, Greg Taylor offering the assist.

FUFA has appointed Ugandan football legend Jackson ‘Mia Mia’ Mayanja as the head coach of the Uganda U20 Men’s Football National Team.

Mayanja will take charge of the team on an interim basis, taking over from Morley Byekwaso.

“FUFA has appointed Jackson Mayanja as interim Head coach of the Uganda U20 National team,” read a statement from FUFA.

Mayanja who already joined the team camp in Kisasi will be assisted by Simeon Masaba and Noah Kasule Babadi while Mubarak Kiberu is the goalkeeping coach.

Uganda is seeking to qualify for the final tournament that will take place next year. Last year, the Hippos reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, losing 2-0 to Ghana.

The Qualifiers for next year’s edition will take place in Sudan and Uganda is placed in Group B alongside Ethiopia and Tanzania.
