Uganda Cranes midfielder Steven Sserwadda debuted for his new side New York Red Bulls after a short loan move from New York Red Bulls II a couple of days ago.

Sserwadda came in for Lucas Lima in the 84th minute to rousing welcome, a game NYRB won 3-0 over New York City FC to advance to the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

It was the team’s first trip to the last four of the oldest cup competition in United States soccer since 2017 and Sserwadda impressed.

Lewis Morgan and Luquinhas scored for the second consecutive game, while Omir Fernandez found the back of the net for the second time in the last three meetings with NYCFC.

It’s the third consecutive win in the New York Derby for the Red Bulls. They’re unbeaten against NYCFC dating back to 2020.

After the match, Sserwadda was accorded a chance to say a word to his teammates after the successful evening;

“First of all I would like to thank everyone, the team for this chance, it has been a hard game but together we made it easy, and thanks for everything,” he said.

Sserwadda, 19, is in his second year with NYRB II and has made 14 USL Championship appearances. He has made 10 appearances this season and has totaled 862 minute.

The Kampala, Uganda native has featured for all levels of Uganda national teams, where he has made three appearances and totaled 120 minutes played for the Uganda senior side.

He made his senior national team debut on on March 25 against Tajikistan.

The Red Bulls will play the winner of next Wednesday’s Orlando City-Nashville matchup in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals on July 26 or 27. 

Burundi midfielder Pistis Barenge will leave Mbarara City when his contract expires at the end of June.

Barenge joined the Ankole Lions in 2017 on a free transfer from Burundi and went on to score the club’s first ever topflight goal in a win over Express FC.  

“BARENGE Pistis will leave Mbarara City following the expiry of his contract on June 30th. The 29-year-old defensive midfielder joined the Lion’s family in the 2017/18 season on a free transfer from Burundi….,” read a statement from Mbarara City.

“Barenge Pistis scored our very first goal in the Uganda top flight league against Express Fc which also helped us secure our first ever win in the league.”

He joins Sudan international Makweth Wol among the big names to quit the club that was relegated at the end of last season from the Uganda Premier League.

Wasswa Bbosa has revealed he wants to transform Gaddafi into a competitive side fighting for trophies.

The coach revealed his goal at the official unveiling by the club where he signed a one year renewable contract based on performance.

“Every club want to win and am here to make Gaddafi compete for trophies and titles,” said Bbosa who also revealed his backroom staff.

“I will work with coaches that have been with in the past that is Sam Kawalya and Ayub Balyejusa as well as George Lutalo and Hassan Zungu and I trust this is a good team,” he added.

Bbosa is famed for using experienced players and he doesn’t hide from the fact.

“In football, you are as old as what you offer. Young or old as long as you can deliver, you will play. But the aim is to lift to the name of the team.”

The club is already linked with players Bbosa has worked with before including Godfrey Lwesibawa, John Byamukama and others from Express FC.

Uganda Cranes and former Vipers winger Kizito Luwagga has joined Azerbaijan Premier League side Sabail FC.

The club announced his arrival on a year deal on today through a statement on their social media.

“One more player joined our attack line – signed a 1-year contract with Luvaqa Kizito! Ugandan, a winger and he is very fast!” it read.

Luwagga has been a free agent since his contract with Hapoel Nof Hagalil expired at the end of last season.

Last season at Hagalil, he scored twice in 25 league games before the Israeli side was relegated to the second division of the Israeli Football League.

He has previously turned up for Vipers SC, Leixoes, Covilha, Rio Ave, Politehnica Lasi, Bate Borisov, Hapoel Kfar Saba and Shakhter Karagandy.

George Lutalo, the head coach of Crested Cranes, has announced Uganda’s final squad that will feature at the forthcoming Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Lutalo revealed a list of 26 players during a press briefing held on Tuesday morning at FUFA Complex in Mengo, Kampala.

The squad has three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders, and ten forwards.

“We had smooth preparations since last year. We played COSAFA and recently CECAFA where the team emerged Champions.

“I believe these tournaments have helped us to get the skeleton of the team and I’m confident the final squad named will help us attain the set targets,” Lutalo told the press.

The contingent will depart for Morocco in the wee hours of Wednesday and the team will have a ten-day training camp in Marrakesh.

Uganda is in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.

The New York Red Bulls have signed New York Red Bulls II midfielder Steven Sserwadda on a short-term loan.

The Ugandan international’s ascension to the side was announced three days by the club’s official website.

“The Ugandan international will be available for the Red Bulls MLS regular season match against Toronto FC on Saturday, June 18,” read a statement.

Sserwadda, 19, is in his second year with NYRB II and has made 14 USL Championship appearances for the club.

He has made 10 appearances this season and has totaled 862 minutes played.

He has featured for all levels of Uganda National Football teams, where he has made three appearances and totaled 120 minutes played for the Uganda Senior National Team.

Former KCCA FC coach Mike Mutebi feels he is ready to return to coaching following his departure from AS Kigali.

Mutebi who admits he misses the dug out however has a caveat. He doesn’t want to return to the Kasasiro but a new club.

“My chapter with KCCA FC ended however I miss coaching and I am ready for my next test but with a new team,” he told NBS Sport.

Mutebi has coached SC Villa FC, KCCA FC, AS Kigali and the Uganda Cranes National Football team among others.

Former KCCA FC tactician Mike Mutebi has expressed regret at accepting to coach Rwanda based club AS Kigali FC.

Mutebi and his assistant Jackson Mayanja were sacked by the side just four months after their appointment.

Mutebi, who is known for his coaching style from the former Netherlands player John Cruyff commonly known as the tiki-taka style didn’t impress at the club.

However, he also feels he wasn’t in the right place. “It was by accident that I accepted to coach
@AS_KigaliFC so when I tried to do things professionally, everything became difficult,” he told NBS Sport.

“I didn’t enjoy my two months there so I decided to leave.”

In the 13 games that Mutebi coached, he won three, drew seven, and lost three games. He left the club sitting 5th on the log with 37 points after 24 matches.

Crested Cranes head coach George William Lutalo has further trimmed his squad ahead of 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Striker Juliet Nalukenge is the most popular on the list of the seven players dropped. UCU Lady Cardinals defender Shadia Nankya who is still struggling with a knee injury is the other cut off.

Natasha Shiraz, Biira Nadunga, Grace Aluka, and Samalie Nakachwa as well as goalie Hadijah Nalongo have also been dropped.

These join the earlier list that had Viola Namuddu, Harima Kanyago, Miriam Ibunyu, Naome Nagadya, Resty Nanziri, and Juliet Adeke who were all dropped after the CECAFA tournament.

Team captain Ruth Aturo who jetted into the country on Saturday evening replaces Nalongo. Aturo completes the list of three goalkeepers that will make the AWCON squad, the others being Daisy Nakaziro and Vanessa Karungi.

The head coach will on Tuesday (tomorrow) morning hold a press conference to announce the final squad.

The Crested cranes are pitted in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal and Burkina Faso as they will see their first game in AWCON.

Makerere University (She Mak) were crowned champions of the 2021-22 FUFA Women Elite League after beating Asubo Gafford Ladies 6-0 in the final on Saturday.

In a match played at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium in Wakiso, striker Sharon Namatovu netted a hat trick while experienced Winnie Babirye, Jemima Twesigye, and second-half substitute Rebecca Nakasato scored the other goals.

The hattrick heroine opened the scoring as early as the second minute before Babirye and Twesigye scored in succession to make it 3-0.

Namatovu then made it 4-0 in the 18th minute and completed her hat trick with a tap-in five minutes into the second half of the one-sided game.

Awards

Namatovu was named the Most Valuable Player of the Season while Wakiso Hill striker Slyvia Namiwanda was the league’s top scorer with 13 goals.

Makerere University’s shot-stopper Zahara Nankya was named the best goalkeeper.

Wakiso Hill WFC won the fair play award.

She Mak will thus play in the top division of women’s football in the country (Fufa Women Super League) next season replacing relegated Tooro.
