Uganda FA President Moses Magogo has confirmed government’s interest in hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.

According to the FUFA head, the plans to host the continental tournament are underway with the government showing interest.

“The Speaker of Parliament confirmed that the President granted a go-ahead for Uganda to make a joint bid with Tanzania to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations,” Magogo revealed.

“We shall come out and tell Ugandans details when the right comes but at the moment, the President gave acceptance because this is one of the conditions for any Nation willing to host.

“On football level, we have already engaged the Tanzania Football Federation about this idea but the Governments of both countries must consent to this.”

The major concern for Uganda would be the lack of football infrastructure to be specific stadia.

However Magogo said; “If we can have Namboole renovated to the best standards, there is St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende, Buhinga, Masaka Recreation Ground plus Akii Bua are already in plan and if we can add one or two structures, then we can have the capacity to host.”

According to the FUFA President who is also a CAF Executive Committee Member, for any Nation to host AFCON, you must have six standard stadia but in case of a joint bid, each country is required to have at least three.

Senegal is one of the countries that has expressed interest to host the 2027 edition. Namibia and Botswana too, are planning on a joint-bid.

He won the Uganda Premier League with Vipers in 2017/18.

Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic had admitted that he is facing the hardest moment of his career as a Uganda Cranes coach.

Over two stints, the Serbian was in charge of his 102nd game as the Cranes drew 1-1 with Niger to remain at the bottom of Group F after two match days with a single point.

Karisa had given Uganda a deserved lead before halftime before wasted chances came back to haunt the Cranes as Anthony Sosah scored a leveller in the 71st minute.

“One detail that is lack of concentration in that moment cost us. If we go by the football, we deserved to win however; football is a very cruel game,” said Micho.

After 102 matches as coach of Uganda, I would just say this is the hardest moment I have ever been because 50 million people are expecting that you are winning but we didn’t.

Micho Sredojevic

Despite sitting bottom of group F with one point, Micho who guided Cranes to the first Afcon finals in 39 years in 2017 still believes the team will qualify for the 2023 finals in Ivory Coast.

However, in the mini league between us, Niger and Tanzania, we believe that we have everything and what it takes to take second place and qualify for the Afcon. It’s hard to accept but I promise that we shall bounce back.

Micho still has belief

Uganda’s next assignments in the competition will come against Taifa Stars in September.

Uganda Cranes head coach Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic believes that the team has all it takes to qualify for Afcon 2023.

Cranes suffered another setback in their campaign as they were held to a one-all draw by Niger at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Wednesday.

The Cranes are currently bottom of Group F with one point after two games but Micho who guided the side to its first Afcon finals in 39 years in 2017 believes the team will qualify for the 2023 finals in Ivory Coast.

“In the mini-league between us, Niger and Tanzania, we believe that we have everything and what it takes to take second place and qualify for the Afcon. It’s hard to accept but I promise that we shall bounce back,” he said during the post-match briefing.

Micho however admits that he is facing the hardest moment of his career as Uganda Cranes head coach.

“After 102 matches as coach of Uganda, I would just say this is the hardest moment I have ever been because 50 million people are expecting that you are winning but we didn’t.”

Next up for the Cranes is a double header against Tanzania in September.
