MTN Uganda in partnership with the Tooro Kingdom launched the Kingdom’s Masaza tournament dubbed “Empaka Z’omupiira Gw’amasaza” last Friday.

The tournament was launched at an event held at the Tooro Kingdom headquarters in Muchwa in the western city of Fort Portal in Kabarole District.

MTN Uganda is the exclusive sponsor of the month-long tournament based on an ongoing partnership that commenced in 2020, between the Kingdom and the MTN.

The tournament is set to kick off on Sunday, 20th March, and will culminate into a grand finale on the 30th birthday of the Omukama of Tooro, His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on Friday, 15th April 2022.

Speaking at the launch of the tournament, Andrew Tusbira, MTN’s head of Commercial Sales and Distribution in South and Western Uganda said that MTN identified and is working with Kingdoms because they are a strong community aggregator that fosters shared beliefs and unity of purpose, that resonates with MTN’s #GoodTogether notion.

“MTN partnered with Tooro kingdom to foster the socio-economic and cultural wellbeing of its people through supporting the fundamentals of health, education, and sports. As such, we are happy to be launching an activity that will further bring together the people of Tooro through a fun and passionate sport that is loved and enjoyed in our community and the world over,” noted Tusubira.

Rt. Hon Bernard Tungakwo, the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, thanked MTN Uganda for loving and supporting the people of Tooro over the years.

“I am happy to note that after two years of no community activity due to the pandemic, this tournament will bring the nine counties of Tooro Kingdom together through football. We are very excited and look forward to these matches,” Tungakwo said.

At the height of a ravaging pandemic last year, MTN supported the Tooro Kingdom coronation ceremony with UGX. 40 million worth of oxygen cylinders for health centers in the kingdom. MTN also renovated and equipped the Maternity ward at Kijuura Health center III as part of the company’s support to improving maternal health in the Tooro Kingdom.

UCU Lady Cardinals extended their brilliant run in the FUFA Women Super League with a convincing victory over hapless Lady Doves on Saturday.

The Mukono-based University had a fantastic display, dispatching Lady Doves with a 5-0 win.

Despite the opening stanza being closely contested, UCU Lady Cardinals ran riot in the final 45 minutes to register their third win in as many games.

Harriet Muwugumya opened the scores in the 12th minute before Hasifah Nassuna, Shadia Nankya, Sandra Kisakye and Asiat Naluggwa added a goal each in the second half.

The result takes UCU Lady Cardinals top of the table on 9 points, two ahead of She Corporate who were held to a goalless draw by Rines SS WFC.

Elsewhere, Kampala Queens picked their first win of the season by edging past She Maroons in Luzira thanks to Margaret Kunihira’s solitary goal. Kunihira who joined the Queens from Kawempe Muslim this season made her full debut for the club.

Gaddafi Football Club scored late to record a one-nil win over Mbarara City at the Gaddafi Arena in Jinja city on Sunday, 20th February 20.

Defender Andrew Waiswa scored the priceless penalty in the 6th minute of added time.

The penalty was awarded by Referee Richard Kimbowa following a foul on Sheif Batte in the forbidden area.

Waiswa, the captain for the home team, composed himself to drill home past goalkeeper Martin Elungat in goal for the Ankole Lions.

Mbarara City endured the final 30 minutes of the game with a man less following a red card to skipper Solomon Okwalinga.

It was the 6th win for Gaddafi that takes them above UPDF in the 8th place with 24 points.

Consequently, Mbarara City suffered their 10th loss of the season which leaves them in the 14th position with 16 points.

KCC Football Club registered a convincing 3-1 win over Onduparaka in a Premier League game played at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo on Saturday.

Herbert Achai, Arafat Usama, and Hassan Jurua were on target for the hosts who have not dropped a point against the Caterpillars at home.

Baden Mujahid’s belter was a consolation for Ondu.

Achai gave the Kasasiro a first-half lead on 34 minutes, curling home a brilliant free-kick to beat goalkeeper Michael Kagiri.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Usama doubled the lead after the Caterpillars failed to clear goalkeeper Kagiri’s save off Davis Kasirye’s close-range effort.

With seven minutes from time, Mujahid’s belter from outside the area beat goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan giving visitors hope of a possible point but Jurua scored one of the contenders for the goal of the season that left Kagiri stranded.

The win takes KCCA to 39 points, one shy of the table leaders Vipers.

Relegation-threatened Busoga United had a victorious return to Kakindu Stadium after edging Express one-nil.

Paul Ssekulima scored the game’s only goal to hand Busoga all three points that saw them climb from second from bottom of the table to 13th place.

The hosts were the better side in the early kick-off and with cheers from a packed crowd in the terraces of Kakindu could have scored more but were not lethal in front of goal.

On the other hand, Express started the post-Wasswa Bbosa era with a stunning defeat. It was the first game with the Red Eagles under James Odoch who is in charge of Mukwano Gw’abangi on the interim until the end of the season.

Defeat means the defending champions fluffed a chance to reduce the gap between them and the leading pack staying 5th on the log with 29 points.

Busoga United is now 17 points and in 13th place, a point above both Mbarara City and Onduparaka who now occupy the relegation zone along with Tooro United who are on nine points.

Busoga returns to action on 4th March in the league with a short trip across the Nile to Njeru to take on SC Villa while on the same day, Express will host KCCA at Mutesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

Vipers Sports Club rallied to pick a point against resilient UPDF Football Club at the Bombo Miltary Playground on Friday.

The league leaders fell behind to Ivan Ahimbisiwe’s first-half penalty and need Paul Mucureezi to come off the bench to score the equalizer from a freekick.

While Vipers dominated early exchanges, UPDF were given an opportunity to take the lead with the referee pointing to the spot after Disan Galiwango shoved Ahimbisiwe in the area.

The forward stepped up and sent Fabien Mutombora the wrong way for the hosts to take the lead.

Milton Karisa headed on to the crossbar while livewire Ceasar Manzoki had a weak effort easily collected as Vipers searched for the opener in the first half.

Vipers played to their fourth draw of the season that sent their points tally to 40, four clear of second-placed KCCA who have played a game less.

It was UPDF’s 7th draw of the season took them to 22 points.

Uganda Premier League leaders Vipers have a chance to open a six-point gap at the top if they beat hosts UPDF at Bombo in the early kickoff.

The Venoms go into the game with a three-point lead over rivals KCCA who are not in action until the following day when they host Onduparaka at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

Vipers who are firing on all cylinders must however be careful as the army side are desperate to end a winless run that now stretches to eight games.

UPDF’s last win came on December 5 when they beat Bright Stars 2-1. They have since lost four and drawn as many leaving coach Brian Ssenyondo under pressure.

The army side will be without defender Jacob Okao who is on loan from the Venoms but could have experienced heads Bernard Muwanga and Denis Ssekitoleko return to the squad.

As usual, Vipers will rely on the trio of Ceaser Mazonki, Yunus Sentamu, and Milton Karisa for inspiration in front of goal.

Kataka Football Club completed a season double over Proline with a 3-0 win on Matchday 13 of the FUFA Big League at the Mbale Municipal Stadium on Thursday.

Bashir Kyazze, Francis Odongo, and Emmanuel Mukisa were on target as Kataka picked maximum points to stay on course for promotion.

Kataka now has 24 points with a game in hand off the first and second-placed clubs, Blacks Power and Maroons.

Blacks Power leads the standings with 27 points after a 2-0 home win over visiting Calvary at the Akii Bua Memorial Stadium in Lira city. John Paul Acire and Fred Okot scored for the home side who have now won 8 matches in 13 games.

Maroons is second on 25 points after a 3-1 win over Ndejje University at the Arena of Visions. George Akena gave Ndejje University the lead as early as the fourth minute with a header past goalkeeper Emmanuel Akol off a distant free-kick from Solomon Akodi.

Norman Odipio equalized on the stroke of halftime.

Fred Amaku gave Maroons the lead three minutes into the second half. William Kiibi’s stoppage-time goal was the icing on the already cake.

Tooro United and SC Villa shared the spoils during a one-all stalemate on Matchday 18 of the 2021-2022 Uganda Premier League at the Buhinga Stadium, Fort Portal on Wednesday, February 16, 2022.

Towering defender Bernard Agele gave the Jogoos the lead on three minutes with a powerful header off a well-taken corner kick by Davis Ssekajja.

SC Villa took the lead 1-0 by the halfway break.

Tooro United returned a better side and won a penalty following a handball incident by Fred Agandu in the forbidden area after a shot blocked by Hussein Mwanje.

On form midfielder Muhamad Kagawa Senoga scored the resultant penalty with a trade-mark jump and tap shot, sending goalkeeper Martin Ssenkooto the wrong way on the left as he shot to the right.

There were four cautions in this game. One going to Tooro United’s Ronald Kayondo in the 54th minute.

The other three bookings were shown to Sports Club Villa. Defender Gavin Kizito Mugweri in the 35th minute, Ali Bayo and Shafik Bakaki in the 51st and 83rd minutes respectively.

Senoga was named the man of the match, earning a plaque and Shs. 100,000.

This was the 7th draw for SC Villa which leaves them with 18 points in the 11th position off 18 games played.

Tooro United picked their third stalemate of the season, coming days after the two-all draw away to Express last week.

The Fort Portal-based side remains rock bottom of the 16 team standings with 9 points.

Uganda U20 Women’s National Team captain Fauzia Najjemba has completed a move to Kazakhstan Women Championship side BIIK Kazygurt.

The lethal forward joins the Kazakh Champions, on a two-year deal from Kampala Queens where she has featured for the last two seasons.

“New home for me. Glad to join BIIK Shymkent and hoping for great memories here.” Najjemba tweeted.

Najjemba becomes the second Ugandan to play for BIIK Kazygurt with Fazila Ikwaput being the first in 2018. While at the club, Ikwaput became the first Ugandan female footballer to feature in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and also scored a goal against Barcelona.

Najjemba had a good run in 2021, finishing as the top scorer for Uganda at the CECAFA U20 Women’s Championship with eleven goals in five games. She was also named the FUFA Female Footballer of the Year thus attracting interest from several teams across the world.

Before joining Kampala Queens, she featured for Isra Soccer Academy in the FUFA Women Elite League.
