Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned MTN8 champions after overcoming Cape Town City, 3-2 on penalties.

The MTN8 final between Masandawan and The Citizens played on Saturday night came down to one man, Denis Onyango.

The former Uganda Cranes captain was the hero for Masandawana, saving five kicks from the penalty spot, in a game that was decided through a shootout.

Normal and extra time of the encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium ended one-all. Sundowns took the lead in the 24th minute through Thapelo Morena with a tap-in after great work from Thabiso Kutumela.

City drew level fifteen minutes from time through Fagrie Lakay.

Despite Cape Town City going a man down late in extra time after Idumba Fasika was given his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card, they held on and the tie had to be decided via a shootout.

Onyango saved five kicks with a man-of-the-match performance.

It’s Mamelodi Sundowns’ first MTN8 title since 2007.

SC Villa got off to a winning start as they got their 2021-22 Uganda Premier Lague campaign underway at Kavumba Recreational Center in Wakiso on Friday.

Sadam Masereka scored six minutes from time to hand the Joogos maximum points against sorry Police Football Club.

The record champions, under new coach Petro Koukouras, started slow with Police who have played more games seemingly in control but they held on till when they settled after nearly twenty minutes.

Yusuf Ssozi, Mubarak Nsubuga, and Brian Mayanja Mululi were all guilty for missing chances for Police who have now scored just once in four matches.

For Villa, youngster Oscar Mawa, Goffin Oyirwoth, and Abdallah Salim put Police backline under some pressure but the first half ended scoreless.

Following the introduction of Masereka after the break, SC Villa’s counter-attacking play unsettled the Cops.

Masereka would later net the only goal of the match after he rushed on to a long ball from goalkeeper Meddie Kibirige and slotted home past Abdu Kimera.

Uganda Women Senior National Team (Crested Cranes) advanced to the final qualifying phase of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON).

Crested Cranes achieved the feat after overcoming Ethiopia at Abebe Biliki Stadium on Tuesday.

Uganda lost the game 2-0 and the tie had to be decided on kicks from the penalty mark having won with the same scoreline at Kitende last week.

Crested Cranes coach George Lutalo made two changes from the team that had started the first leg with Juliet Nalukenge and Sheebah Zalwango starting ahead of Hasifa Nassuna and Sandra Nabweteme.

Senaf Wakuma and Loza Abera scored a goal each in the first half to give Ethiopia a brilliant start but Uganda looked an improved side after the break to hold on and force the tie into penalties.

In the shootout, Ethiopia converted just one of the five attempts. Uganda’s goalkeeper and captain Ruth Aturo saved twice, with the other two Ethiopian players denied by the woodwork.

Despite Sumaya Komuntale and Joan Nabirye missing, Hasifa Nassuna and Fauzia Najjemba scored to guide Uganda to victory.

Uganda will therefore face Kenya in the final qualification stage.
