Bright Stars played to a one-all draw stalemate against Express in the Uganda Premier League at Kavumba Recreational Grounds, Wakiso on Thursday.

Isaac Wagoina fired the hosts ahead before Ashraf Mulindi leveled matters late in the encounter.

The two sides played to a goalless first-half encounter, with several chances created none was buried setting up an entertaining second half.

On-form forward Wagoina fired Express in the driving seat in the 47th minute with a rebound after his penalty was saved

That was after Steven Ssenfuma was fouled in the dangerous area to send Wagoina to the penalty spot.

However, Mulindi leveled matters in the 85th minute tapping in a dangerous cross from Nelson Senkatuka to turn around emotions giving the home side a reason to smile.

Express lie eighth on the log with 26 points while Bright Stars move to 22 points in the 11th position.

Bright Stars will return to action on Thursday, February 29 as they visit Vipers SC at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Uganda Premier League | Results 

Mbarara City secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Busoga United in the Uganda Premier League at Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara on Thursday.

Edward Namasa scored the only goal as Wasswa Bbosa’s troops secured maximum points on the day.

The Ankole Lions have continued to prove their dominance and class at home losing only to NEC FC in the opening league game.

In the 14th minute, Namasa scored a rebound after Busoga United failed to deal with Sadiq Ssekyembe’s powerful corner kick.

Mbarara held on and guarded their victory at the end of 90 minutes of a physical game.

The victory takes Mbarara City to the 11th position with 20 points while Busoga United are 14th with five points less than Mbarara.

Next on the menu, Mbarara City will be on the road to play Bright Stars on Friday, March 8 while Busoga United take Gaddafi on Thursday, February 29.

Uganda Cup | Result

Uganda Premier League side, URA fought from a goal down to beat FUFA Big League side Calvary in the Uganda Cup on Wednesday evening.

In a game played at Midigo Primary School in Yumbe, the Tax Collectors showed character and charisma to come out victorious away from home.

Nathan Oloro gave the hosts a lead in the 16th minute thanks to a great start in the close encounter.

Calvary held on and ensured that they concluded the first 45 minutes on top of the duel.

Six minutes into the second half, Ibrahim Wammanah levelled matters with a powerful effort from a distance.

In the 75th minute, Ibrahim Dada finally placed the visitors in the driving seat. Quick-footed Dada calmly guided home Moses Aliro’s delivery.

Ten minutes later, Ahimbisibwe extended URA’s lead punishing Calvary’s goalkeeper who made a howler in front of the goal.

Dada put the icing on the cake with a minute to play. The forward’s powerful strike off Ahimbisibwe’s great through pass ensured David Obua’s troops secured a thrilling victory.

Uganda Hippos head coach Morley Byekwaso has revealed the 23-man squad that will be carrying the country’s flag in the Dire Cup.

The tournament is to sharpen the boys ahead of the 2023 All-African Games set to happen in Accra, Ghana.

The 23-man squad is made up of three goalkeepers, seven defenders, six midfielders, and seven forwards who will be tasked to score the goals.

The boys have spent six days in intensive training at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru and they will be now going for real action in Ethiopia.

The tournament will have four nations including Uganda, Djibouti, Kenya, and the hosts Ethiopia.

Byekwaso said that the Dire Cup tournament is a great platform to fine-tune the boys ahead of the bigger challenge.

“The (Dire Cup) tournament in Ethiopia is more than just a contest. It’s a strategic opportunity to fine-tune strategies and assess their dynamics before the All Africa Games,” he said.

“The tournament is a crucial phase in our journey. Selecting the final 23 was challenging, and narrowing it down to 20 for such a major tournament is even a more indicating task. However, I believe in the potential of this team and we aim to harvest the best for the All Africa Games,” he added.

Uganda Premier League – Fixture

It has not been a smooth road for Express FC in the second round of the Uganda Premier League having lost two of the games played so far.

Before the end of the first round, the Red Eagles registered four straight victories but later went on to fall to Mbarara City and KCCA putting the team in a worrying state.

While speaking in the pre-match conference, Express assistant coach Augustine Nsumba revealed that they expect to return to winning ways.

“We painfully lost our last league game against KCCA. The game against Bright Stars offers us a chance to return to winning ways and that’s our sole target,” he said.

“The team is ready to encounter Bright Stars. We have used the previous days to furnish on the areas we had to improve. So, we expect maximum points tomorrow,” he added.

“The team is in good shape and all the boys are ready to play apart from John Assimwe and Marvin Oshaba who will miss the game due to the accumulation of bookings.”

The last time the two sides met, Thiery Ssali was on target as the seven times league champions secured maximum points on the day.

In the last five games between the two sides, each side has picked a victory once and the other three games have ended in draws.

Express are eighth on the log while Bright Stars are 10th on the log after playing 17 league games this season.

University Football League | Results

Makerere University Business School (MUBS) holds wasteful Bugema University in a goalless in the University Football League duel played on Tuesday evening.

It was an entertaining game from both sides but were very wasteful in front of the goal.

Jonathan Mugenyi nearly gave the visitors the lead but his first time touch was deflected away by Bugema’s custodian Ronald Kalungi in the 10th minute.

In the 20th minute, Sulaiman Ssentongo climbed highest in front of the goal to connect with Charles Kagoda’s delivery but the effort went high and wide of the frame.

Trevor Wakaisuka was fouled in the area by Richard Emomer but the centre referee waved on as the visiting side was left in anguish.

At that moment, the hosts won possession and started off a quick counter attack but Hillary Innocent Ayebale was spot on palming away Isaac Ssenyunja’s curling powerful effort.

Otuke fouled Joseph Male at the age of the box to give Bugema a freekick but Ayebale made a great save punching away Denis Kimuli’s powerful freekick with a double thrilling save.

Ssenyunja continued to beat bodies to pace and precision but Otuke and Marvin Atugonza worked hard to keep him at bay.

The two sides will lock horns in the return leg of the fixture on March 5, 2024 to decide who goes further in the ongoing tournament. 

Uganda Cup | Results

Uganda Premier League side NEC secured a thrilling 5-1 victory against Northern Regional League side Acholi United in the Uganda Cup at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo on Tuesday.

Joseph Dhata, Marvin Kavuma, and Gadafi Wahab were on target as NEC sealed a spot in the Round of 16 of the prestigious tournament.

Dhata fired home in the 12th minute of the game to open the floodlights in front of a fair crowd.

Six minutes later, he found the second of the day as NEC continued to seal dominance in the physical duel.

Before the break, Wahab and Kavuma added other goals to ensure that the scoreboard reads 4-0 in their favor.

Coming from the locker rooms, Otim pulled back one for Acholi United before Dhata completed a stunning hatrick with a powerful long-range effort.

It’s only two games left at this stage as Calvary hosts URA and Pakwach Young Stars face off against Wakiso Giants.

Uganda U20 National Men’s Team (Uganda Hippos) have been invited to take part in the new Dire Cup.

The tournament is set to take place starting from Saturday, February 24 until February 28, 2024.

The development was made published today Monday, February 19 via the official FUFA website.

“FUFA has confirmed that the Uganda U20 men’s national team will take part in an invitational football tournament organised for the inauguration of the Dire Dawa International Stadium,” the website quoted.

Uganda will be part of the four-team tournament that also has Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti.

According to FUFA Communications director, Ahmed Hussein added that the team will travel this Wednesday, February 21, since the opening game is on Friday.

Uganda will also use Gofere-branded kits during the tournament which will be used by both the men’s and women’s teams.

Later the team will take part in the forthcoming All-Africa Games that are to take place in Ghana next month.

Uganda Cup | Results

SC Villa were on top of the game as they secured a 5-0 victory against Synergy in the Uganda Cup on Sunday evening.

In the one-sided affair played at Muteesa II Stadium, the Jogoo blew out the Masaka based to seal a spot in the next round of the tournament.

Before the end of the first stanza, Charles Lwaga fired Villa ahead to open the floodgates.

A minute into the second stanza, Hakim Kiwanuka doubled the host’s lead with a solo effort as he lit the fans into the party mood.

Five minutes later, Peter Onzima’s beauty made it three up thanks to Lwanga’s thrilling delivery. The hosts continued to show their comfort on the ball. 

In the 62nd minute of the game, Kiwanuka completed a personal double with yet another come finished to add salt to Synergy’s wounds.

Villa introduced Regan Mpande, Andrew Otim, and Gavin Kiziyo for Lwanga, Onzima, and Kenneth Semakula in the 63rd minute.

In the 75th minute, the substitutes Otim and Mpande combined in a great move before the latter directed the ball into the back of the net.

Villa will return to action on Saturday, February 24 as they host Vipers in the Uganda Premier League.

FUFA Women Super League | Results

Zainah Nandede was on target as Kampala Queens secured a 1-0 victory against Wakiso Hill in the FUFA Women’s Super League on Sunday morning.

In a game played at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, the visitors worked hard to see that they walked away with maximum points on the day.

Nandende nodded home off Catherine Nagadya’s freekick as the Queens of Soccer took the lead in the 10th minute of the game.

Amidst good football from both sides, the first half came to an end with Kampala Queens holding onto a narrow lead.

Wakiso Hill made a double change introducing Rashida Nankya and Sunday Giovana Aketowanga for Teopista Apino and Esther Anzoo.

Kampala Queens’ custodian Daisy Nakazito made a stellar save and denied Sylvia Kabene’s low drive before she followed the rebound to thwart it away from the line.

The victory keeps Kampala Queens in the second position with 23 points, one behind log leaders Kawempe Muslim after playing 10 games.
