Prior to the signing of a three-year partnership at the 19th hole between MTN Uganda and Entebbe Club, there were 18 holes played under rainy conditions at the par-71 Entebbe Golf Course.

Edward Kabuchu and Diana Nabukenya were overall and women’s winners respectively as the MTN Monthly Tees got underway on Saturday, 22nd April.

Kabuchu scored 63 nett to top the large field as the overall winner.

Tony Kisadha won Group A with 68 nett, a stroke ahead of Patrick Ndase (69) who was the runners-up.

Ronald Osekeny topped Group B with 68 nett, beating Micheal Monne on countback.

In the Ladies’ Category, Nabukenya was outstanding with 71 nett, beating Rita Akot Apell by two strokes.

The seniors (55 years and above) were topped by Dr Kato Ssebaale with 71 nett and Emmanuel Wamimbi was the best guest performer with 67 nett.

MTN Uganda and Entebbe Club officially entered into a three-year partnership on Saturday, 22nd April 2023.

The agreement signed electronically will see the par-71 course host a monthly tournament called The MTN Monthly Tee, the first of which was played earlier on Saturday.

“MTN Uganda is thrilled to partner with the Entebbe Club to boost golf development and promote the spirit of engagement with the golfing community in Uganda,” Sylvia Mulinge, the CEO of MTN Uganda, said at the 19th hole.

“The Monthly Tee events present the perfect opportunity to make new friends, showcase Uganda’s golf talent, and build our relationships with the community,” she added.

As part of the partnership, MTN Uganda will also support the building of a halfway rest house as well as the refurbishment of the Entebbe Club House.

“We believe that this infrastructure support together with the sponsorship of the MTN Monthly Tee demonstrates our belief that when we work together, we are unstoppable in our quest for excellence in whatever we do,” Mulinge noted.

Jacob Byaruhanga, the chairperson of Entebbe Club, thanked MTN for the sponsorship and highlighted the principles of the club.

“I want to thank MTN for coming and partnering with us. MTN and Entebbe Club are in this for the long haul and our partnership will not have any losers. Our principles are inclusion, community and socialization,” Byaruhanga said.

Founded in 1901, Entebbe Club is East and Central Africa’s oldest golf facility.

2023 Entebbe Ladies Golf Open:

Champion: Martha Babirye (Handicap 3) – 73, 76 (149)

Martha Babirye finally won the Entebbe Ladies Golf title during the 13th edition played at the par 71 lakeside golfing facility in Entebbe Municipality over 36 holes in two days.

Babirye, also the reigning Uganda Ladies Open champion has now won most domestic competitions there is to offer on the ladies’ front.

“I have patiently but aggressively waited for my moment to win the Entebbe Ladies open. This is one trophy I was missing in my collections. I am so happy that I finally did it,” Babirye told reporters moments after holing out on hole 18 during the second round.

Babirye took a three-shot lead from the opening round in a field of 84 silver and bronze category golfers. On day two, she played 5-over 76 but still managed to win.

“I have been chasing the Entebbe ladies in my career. I feel relieved and very excited about the victory. When I opened the lead on day one, I did not rest, I came back determined the job done and here I am as a champion. I thank my playing mates for the good game and healthy competition, my sponsors led by Dorren Mwesigye, Shoeman International and others,” Babirye told the guests at the 19th hole.

The 2023 Entebbe Ladies Open lured two female professionals; Irene Nakalembe and Flavia Namakula.

Nakalembe carried the day with 1-under 70 gross score to claim the lion’s share of the UGX 2,000,000 kitty from the sponsors.

On the other hand, Namakula played 3-over 74.

“This has been a well-organized tournament especially having female professionals on board. This should be the trend for other female tournaments in the future to inspire as many budding female golfers” Nakalembe who claimed 7 titles (Entebbe Ladies open) as an amateur revealed.

A record field of 266 golfers (including subsidiaries) took part in this two-day championship that had one Kenyan female guest.

Joseph Cwinya-ai returned to the podium as champion after the 2023 Venus Golf open championship at the Toro club in Fort Portal city.

The national team golf captain struck 2-under 70 (gross) to beat the rest of the field to the top prize. He was two and three strokes better than Frank Mugisha (72) and Titus Okwong (73).

The ladies’ category was won by Judith Komugisha (75 gross) and Lillian Koowe came second with 84 gross.

In the senior’s event (55 years and above), it was all smiles for the golfing couple of the Kagombe. Charles Kagombe won the men’s event with 71 nett as Edrea Kagombe finished top among the ladies (75 nett).

Charles beat runners-up Smart Bwango (73) to the top prize as Edrea came top ahead of Jill Pinda.

Other top performers:

In the men group A (handicap 7-12), George Kahihura (handicap 8) won the countdown with 72, as Emmanuel Komugisha (handicap 7) and Albert Mwebwe (handicap 12) followed with a 72 net scores as well.

For group B (handicap 13-18), Eriah Byaruhanga (handicap 15) also won on 72 nett (countback), the same score as Mutesasira Kitengo (handicap 15) and Andrew Isagara (handicap 14).

In group C (handicap 19-28), the winner was Polly Rwandekeye (handicap 28) with 70 nett.

Denning Yampa (handicap 36) followed with 77 whilst Brian Masaba (handicap 22) was third with 79.

Ladies:

Robina Angom, playing off handicap 14 scored 75 nett to win the ladies’ group A (handicap 0-18) ahead of Ann Abeja (handicap 8) with 76 nett.

In group B (handicap 19-28), Florah (handicap 25) won with 65 nett, ahead of Rossett Tugume

Aisha Kansiime (handicap 29) scored 69 to win group C ladies (handicap 29-39).

Side-bets:

Mehta Golf club’s Godfrey Nsubuga won the men’s longest drive contest with Janet Kabayonga taking the ladies’ award.

Titus Okwong won the nearest to the pin (men) and Judith Komugisha took the ladies.

Bernard Baguma, Toro Club Captain expressed his gratitude towards the golfers and sponsors for the successful tournament.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that we got to do this again and very successfully. Today’s tourney is one that we always look forward to on our calendar and the fact that we got to do it with Venus and Tusker Malt makes it all worthwhile. Meanwhile, the same championship (Venus open) was used to officially tee off the country-wide Tusker Malt Golf Series.

This countrywide tour is expected to traverse all parts of the country in a bid to make golf more accessible and inclusive.

The next stop on the Tour is Lugazi with the Mehta Open which is expected to take place on March 18 and then to Arua City for the Arua Open which is slated to take place in June.

The Serena 63 Golf series was launched at the picturesque Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa golfing facility at Kigo, Wakiso district.

For starters, the series derived its name from the championship record of 63 gross currently held by Kenya’s legendary professional golfer Dismas Indiza (set in 2019 during the Tusker Malt Uganda Golf Open).

Lake Victoria Serena will be offering pricing associated with 63 throughout the tournament for example; Accommodation single room bb: $163, platter for 2: 63,000, entry fee: 63,000 etc.

The series will last for as long as 40 weeks effective 1st March to 3rd December 2023 with each golfer expected to play a minimum of 36 rounds (18 holes each).

There are enticing prizes worth Shs 36,000,000 to be won as well as 12 months’ golf members at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf resort and spa.

Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa is proud to announce the Serena 63 Golf Series presented by Serena Hotels, Resorts & Lodges. This will be the biggest prized amateur event in the region. The Serena 63 Golf Series will be a golf competition run over a 40-week period. Players must play a minimum of thirty-six 18 hole rounds of golf to qualify for the main prizes. Registration:

Registration will take place from 1 March 2023 online and at the Pro-Shop. Registrations will close on 1st April 2023. All participants must provide a valid CDH/ID to enter.

The top winners will be announced on 9th December 2023.

There will be weekly updates will be shared with all registered players on point standings. There will be quarterly winners on the order of Merit as the competition progress.

All scorecards need to be signed by the player and marker and placed in the designated scorecard box provided at the Pro-Shop with all rounds to be played according to the Rules of Golf published by R&A Limited.

Kenya Day Golf Tourney 2022 (Professionals):

Professional golfer Herman Deco Mutebi failed to make the round one cut during the 2022 Uganda Professional Golf open at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and spa.

It however safe to say hemay have been improving since making three subsequent cuts in Jinja (Kakira Open), Masindi (Kinyara Open), and lately Mbale (Eastern open).

The Entebbe-based professional golfer scored three under 69 (gross) to emerge as the best. He played a total of 37 on the front nine holes and 32 on the subsequent nine.

Mutebi played a total of four birdies (8, 12, 16, and 18), thirteen pars (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 17), and one bogie (7).

He was a stroke better than the duo of Ashraf Bagalana and the legendary Deo Akope. Phillip Kasozi scored 1-under 71 to finish fourth overall.

Marvin Kibirige, Ronald Rugumayo, Vincent Byamukama and Adolf Muhumuza were level par (72) to complete the top eight cluster that made the treasured cut to partake of the total Shs 6,000,000 kitty.

Missed the cut:

A couple of golfers sadly missed the cut line after the 18 holes action.

David Kamulindwa Amooti, James Koto, and Abby Bagalana (73 apiece), Silver Opio, Tadeo Gaita Rodell and Abraham Ainamani (all 74), Brian Toolit, Ronald Bukenya, Gerald Kabuye (75), Herman Mutawe (76), Denis Anguyo, Bruhan Matovu, George Olayo, Ismail Muhamood, Fred Wanzala (77), Grace Kasango (78), Samuel Kato, Tom Jingo, Canary Kabise, Martin Ochaya and Saidi Mawa (79), Becca Mwanja, Richard Baguma (80), Lawrence Muhenda (81) and Nasser Mackie (82) all missed.

A total of thirty-five (35) professionals took part in the day-long event played under sunny conditions.

Kenya Golf Day 2022 Tournament:

The 2022 Kenya Golf Tournament has lured as many as 250 golfers (amateurs and professionals) to the par-72 Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.

The professionals will swing into action on Friday, 9th December 2022 as the main championship will come on a subsequent day.

The official launch was held at UGC on Thursday, December 8, 2022 with different companies joining the noble cause as graced by Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Major General (Rtd) George Aggrey Owino.

Telecommunications company MTN Uganda is among the companies that bank-rolled this championship.

MTN Uganda has financed the tournament with Shs 20,000,000 as announced by the senior manager of communications and public relations, Rhona Arinaitwe.

“We are privileged to be part of the Kenya Golf Day tournament as we continue to associate with sport and other social corporate responsibility causes” Arinaitwe revealed.

Major General (Rtd) Owino expressed delight at the overwhelming response by the different organizations to be part of the celebrations to mark Kenya’s Independence.

“I am honored that we have managed to have as many companies as possible for the 2022 Kenya Golf Day tournament. This is indeed a great blessing” he stated.

Uganda Golf Club captain Emmanuel Wamala confirmed that the turn-up is overwhelming as the numbers are increasing for those willing to take part.

Wamala noted that the professionals will play for Shs 6,000,000 as their kitty as the main open swings off on Saturday with enticing prizes to be won.

“We have over 250 golfers who have already registered to take part. The mode of play will be a stable-ford full handicap. The preparations are going on well and we laud the companies that have come to be part” Wamala noted.

Besides the trophies and other plaques, the excelling golfers will be rewarded with return air tickets from Entebbe to Nairobi and Mombasa cities.

The 2022 Jamhuri Day Golf Tournament set for this weekend at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club has lured over 250 golfers both amateurs and professionals.

The tournament was officially launched on Thursday, December 8 with different companies joining the cause. The occasion was graced by Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Major General (Rtd) George Aggrey Owino.

MTN Uganda has financed the tournament to the tune of Ugx 20 million as announced by Rhona Arinaitwe, the Senior Manager Communications and Stake Holder Management.

“We are privileged to be part of the Kenya Golf Day tournament as we continue to associate with sport and other social corporate responsibility causes,” Arinaitwe said.

This follows a contribution of Ugx 4.3 million that was put towards the CSR activity that took place at Good Shepherd, Mengo.

Jamhuri Day 2022 Golf Tournament | Uganda Golf Club – Kampala

Robson Chinhoi is the winner of the 2022 Uganda Golf Pro Open.

The Zimbabwean scored a gross of 277 during the four days of action at the par 72 Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course.

Chinhoi who led throughout scored a total of 19 birdies and 3 eagles, 37 pars, 12 bogies, and 1 double bogie.

In the opening round, he recorded 3-under 69 but was one shot off on day two with a 2-under 70. During the third round, he was in brilliant form returning 6-under 66 and level par during the final round on Saturday.

It is the second victory for Chinhoi in the Uganda Pro Open having claimed the 2020 edition played at Uganda Golf Club in Kampala

Uganda’s Ronald Rugumayo and Kenyan Simon Mburu Ngige tied for second with 287 gross apiece (-1).

Greg Snow of Kenya came fourth with 290 while Samuel Njoroge Chege and Zimbabwean Nyasha Muyambo tied for 5th with 291 gross each.

Zimbabwe’s Visitor Mapwanya (293), Rwandan Celestine Nsanzuwera (293), Kenya’s David Wakhu (294), Ugandan Phillip Kasozi (294), and US-based Ugandan Willy Deus Kitata (294) and legendary Kenyan Dismas Indiza Anyonyi (294) completed the top 12 places.

Uganda’s female professional golfer Irene Nakalembe made history by becoming the first lady to make the cut at the Uganda Pro Open championship.

Nakalembe is among the successful 30-plus golfers who have made the cut (+8) at the annual open whose 2022 edition is happening at the par-72 Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course.

After registering 8-over par on the opening round, Nakalembe staged a decent display to play a course-level score (72 gross) on day two.

She was outstanding with 4 birdies; two apiece on the front and back nine.

Her first birdie came on the par-4 hole 1, then the par 3 hole 7, par 4 hole 12, and par 5 hole 13.

The Entebbe-based professional registered a total of 10 par scores on holes 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 14, 16, and 17.

The grey patches came on holes 6, 11, 15, and 18 where she registered bogies.

Nakalembe attributes her success to hard work and belief.

“It has been purely due to hard work and belief. After playing 8 over on day one, I did not rest. There was hope of improvement for the second round,” Nakalembe noted.

She is among the 13 Ugandan professionals who have made the cut and will partake of the Shs 97,500,000/= total kitty.

The others are Ronald Rugumayo, Adolf Muhumuza, Deus Willy Kitata, Grace Kasango, Ibrahim Bagalana, Silver Opio, Phillip Kasozi, Marvin Kibirige, Tadeo Rodell Gaita, Brian Toolit, Abraham Ainamani and David Kamulindwa.

Another female pro golfer Flavia Namakula missed the cut after two rounds.
