JKL Lady Dolphins avenged last year’s loss to UCU Lady Canons in the National Basketball League Playoffs Finals by sweeping the university side.

The Lady Dolphins beat the Lady Canons 75-65 on Friday night to sweep the best-of-five series 3-0 to advance to the finals where they will start as overwhelming favourites to win the title.

Going into Friday’s encounter, UCU Lady Canons faced a must-win situation after losing their first two games against JKL.

The university side had a 38-37 lead at halftime, but JKL surged back, dominating the third quarter with a score of 26-15 as Brenda Ekone knocked down three triples. JKL never let go of their advantage throughout the game.

Hope Akello finished with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds to power the Dolphins. Rita Imanishimwe and Ekone contributed 17 and 16 points respectively while Flavia Oketcho handed out 8 assists.

On the UCU side, Bridget Aber also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Shakira Nanvubya and Aziida Nabayunga contributed 10 points apiece.

KIU Rangers are odds on to make their maiden appearance in the National Basketball League Playoffs Finals.

The Rangers took command of their five-game semifinal series against JT Lady Jaguars following a narrow 70-67 win on Wednesday night at YMCA.

It was a game the Lady Jaguars did everything to win but were undone by their star player Sarah Ageno fouling out, leaving the key open and the Rangers took full advantage.

Dorcas Maronbera was pivotal, scoring nine points in the decisive final quarter, ultimately securing the victory for KIU.

Maronbera scored 22 points to go with 7 rebounds and five assists which was complemented by Rose Amaniyo, who notched a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Ines Kanyamunza also had a good game for the Rangers, contributing 17 points.

Sarah Ageno led JT Lady Jaguars with 20 points while skipper Rhoda Naggita added 11 points in a losing effort.

UCU Canons sealed the last spot in the National Basketball League Playoff semifinals after defeating Power on Wednesday.

The Canons cruised past Power 85-68 at YMCA to take the series 2-1 and advance to the semifinals where they will face KIU Titans.

UCU Canons who arrived at the venue much earlier than their opponents showed intent right away by swiftly seizing control of the game right from tipoff. The first quarter saw them establish a double-digit lead, outscoring their opponents 23-8.

By halftime, the signs were clear that the university side would advance as the scoreboard read 50-23 in their favour. Their dominance continued into the third quarter, where they extended their lead to an impressive 29 points (70-41).

However, in the final quarter, the Canons seemed to put the foot off the gas pedal which allowed Power to make the final score seem like the game was a contest as they won the quarter 27-15.

Peter Sifuma scored 20 points to go with 12 rebounds to lead Canons while Lwabaga Ibanda and Abraham Isyagi also scored in double figures with 18 and 12 points respectively.

Ozias Kikomba, Elvis Ssentongo, and Elvis Mpeti reached double-figure scoring for Power with 15, 14, and 13 points respectively.

The afternoon rain did not stop the biggest turn-up thus far in the MTN Monthly Tee at Entebbe Golf Club as 205 players took the course on Saturday.

Joseph Bogera, playing off handicap 12, returned to the clubhouse with the best score of 69 nett on count back, to win the September Gong.

“By the time I was on [hole] number 5, I was on the green on time in regulation. The reason we are here is because we are unstoppable,” Bogera, who works with MTN as the Sales and Distribution Manager said at 19-hole that was spiced up by Chenosis, a cross-industry API Marketplace that enables developers, entrepreneurs and businesses to integrate into the fastest growing library of Open APIs.

Namuwongo Blazers suffered a rare loss to bottom-placed Rezlife Saints in the National Basketball League at Lugogo Arena on Sunday.

Rezlife held their nerves throughout the game to register an 88-62 victory to keep their hopes of survival alive.

It was the final game for Nam Blazers in regular season carding 17 victories and five losses throughout the 22 games of the campaign.

Before falling to the newcomers, Nam Blazers had failed to go past City Oilers (twice), UCU Canons and KIU Titans.

On the other hand, Rezlife has managed only four wins and still has four games to conclude their regular season.

The winning team’s scoreboard was led by Joshua Maiba who harvested a double-double, scoring 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Micheal Otieno and Micheal Ssematimba added 17 and 12 points respectively to give the Lubowa-based side a deserving win.

Dickson Asiku and Chuol Nyuot scored 18 and 12 respectively for Blazers but it was not enough to secure a positive result from the game.

Rezlife Saints suffered their eighth straight loss in the National Basketball League (NBL) at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Wednesday.

D-Mark Power registered a 77-71 victory against the Saints who sunk further on the 12-team NBL log.

With four games to play, the Lubowa-based side has their chances to play in the NBL next season hanging on a thin thread.

Rezlife’s remaining fixture will see them tussle out JKL Dolphins, Ndejje Angels, UPDF Tamahwaks, and Namuwongo Blazers as they seek a perfect run from all those outings.

Guellord Mobanza and Ozias Kikomba scored a game-high 17 points each while Elvis Ssentongo added 14 for the D-Mark Power.

For Rezlife, Emmanuel Okot harvested 15 points, Benjamin Kawumi and Ivan Ombiru contributed 12 before Claude Alisengawa added 10.

With two games to conclude the regular season, Power has managed to win 11 of their 20 games played while Rezlife suffered the 15th loss in the 18 games played so far.

Proteas captain Bongi Msomi has admitted South Africa Netball team were below the required standards after settling for sixth position at the Netball World Cup in Cape Town.

The SA squad lost their last playoff match of the tournament in a narrow 49-47 defeat to the She-Cranes.

The hosts tried to claw their way back in the final quarter, but Uganda held on to take fifth position – their best-ever finish at a World Cup.

“It was very important to try and give it our best shot and maintain our (world) ranking, but we just gave away too many balls,” said Proteas captain Bongi Msomi.

“Kudos to them (Uganda). They played really well today, and I’m obviously disappointed. I still need to go back and try and feel this. At this point, I don’t even know what to feel.”

This was the first time since 2007 that the Proteas finished outside the top five at the global showpiece.

Uganda defeated South Africa 49-47 to finish in 5th position at the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town, the country’s highest-ever position in the event.

The She Cranes repeated the feat which also happened last year at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in the playoff for 5th/6th position.

Uganda opened the scoring in the second minute through a goal-by-goal attack by Shadiah Nassanga.

With the momentum swinging slightly in South Africa’s favour, Mary Nuba Cholhok was gesturing to her Uganda teammates to remain calm.

Uganda disrupted South Africa’s play with a strong defensive effort, getting hands and bodies in the way.

Going into the last 15 minutes of the match, Uganda was continuing to enjoy the lion’s share of possession (60 per cent) and it was left for South Africa to play catchup.

As the match was nearing its end but it was the She Cranes who managed to keep their nerves.

They stretched their lead to five goals and were on course to get the better of the Proteas for the second time in a year at a major tournament.

With four minutes left, Uganda had just two points in the lead but they held on, preventing South Africa from any scoring opportunities.

It was the clever play from Uganda that secured them the victory and 5th place at the World Cup in Cape Town.

Uganda Netball She Cranes shooter Mary Cholhok Nuba is excited at the prospect of playing Netball in Australia following success in the United Kingdom and at the 2023 World Cup in South Africa.

Nuba is yet to realise the opportunity to move to the country like her predecessor Peace Proscovia who turned out for Sunshine Coast Lightning between 2019 to 2021, but she’s hopeful it can happen.

The 6ft 7in superstar was speaking to The Guardian in a “deep” interview as she stated, where she revealed that she wants to become the “baddest shooter” if she ever got an opportunity to play in Australia.

“When I go to Australia I want to be the baddest shooter ever,” she told The Guardian’s Chloe Merrell.

Nuba is currently based in the UK, where she plays for Loughborough Lightning in the Netball Super League. She is originally from South Sudan, and her family fled to Uganda as refugees after her father died when she was six.

At the 2023 World Cup, she has been Uganda’s top scorer with 137 goals in 153 attempts, and 89.5% percentage success.

Cholhok hopes by sharing her story she will inspire “the life of a young South Sudanese girl who might share the same fate.”
