Kenya Golf Day 2022 Tournament:
The 2022 Kenya Golf Tournament has lured as many as 250 golfers (amateurs and professionals) to the par-72 Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.
The professionals will swing into action on Friday, 9th December 2022 as the main championship will come on a subsequent day.
The official launch was held at UGC on Thursday, December 8, 2022 with different companies joining the noble cause as graced by Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Major General (Rtd) George Aggrey Owino.
Telecommunications company MTN Uganda is among the companies that bank-rolled this championship.
MTN Uganda has financed the tournament with Shs 20,000,000 as announced by the senior manager of communications and public relations, Rhona Arinaitwe.
“We are privileged to be part of the Kenya Golf Day tournament as we continue to associate with sport and other social corporate responsibility causes” Arinaitwe revealed.
Major General (Rtd) Owino expressed delight at the overwhelming response by the different organizations to be part of the celebrations to mark Kenya’s Independence.
“I am honored that we have managed to have as many companies as possible for the 2022 Kenya Golf Day tournament. This is indeed a great blessing” he stated.
Uganda Golf Club captain Emmanuel Wamala confirmed that the turn-up is overwhelming as the numbers are increasing for those willing to take part.
Wamala noted that the professionals will play for Shs 6,000,000 as their kitty as the main open swings off on Saturday with enticing prizes to be won.
“We have over 250 golfers who have already registered to take part. The mode of play will be a stable-ford full handicap. The preparations are going on well and we laud the companies that have come to be part” Wamala noted.
Besides the trophies and other plaques, the excelling golfers will be rewarded with return air tickets from Entebbe to Nairobi and Mombasa cities.

MTN Uganda has financed the tournament to the tune of Ugx 20 million as announced by Rhona Arinaitwe, the Senior Manager Communications and Stake Holder Management.
“We are privileged to be part of the Kenya Golf Day tournament as we continue to associate with sport and other social corporate responsibility causes,” Arinaitwe said.
This follows a contribution of Ugx 4.3 million that was put towards the CSR activity that took place at Good Shepherd, Mengo.

Apart from the usual Professionals and Amateurs categories, two other categories have been added to the menu that is Military and Diplomats.

Following KCCA and Prisons Netball Club’s wins in the Uganda Netball Super League on Wednesday, defending champions NIC slipped to 3rd place on the table.
In the three games played at Kamwokya Community Sports Center, Prisons and KCCA won their respective fixtures leapfrogging NIC to go top.
KCCA found no resistance in beating the bottom-of-the-table Posta Netball Club by 65-18, a win that took Fred Mugerwa’s charges to the top of the table for the first time this season.
In the first quarter, KCCA netted 24 goals as Posta managed just six. However, the scoring rate kept on diminishing and in the last quarter, they scored only eight goals. The score by quarter was 24-6, 18-3, 15-5, and 8-4.
The win took KCCA to the top of the table with 18 points from nine played games.
Prisons Netball Club beat UPDF Netball Club 59-32 also to move second on the table with as many points but only separated by goal average.
NIC slipped to third with 16 points and has played a game more than KCCA and Prisons who face off on Saturday.
In the other game played on Wednesday, Police beat Busia Greater Lions 44-34. It was Busia’s last game of the first round and complete the round with 10 points. The win for Police moved them to 12 points and now seat 6th on the log.

Netball Super League defending champions NIC dropped to third place on the table following the wins registered by their title rivals KCCA and Prisons Netball Club.
In the three games which were played on Wednesday at Kamwokya Community Sports Center, Prisons and KCCA won their fixtures, leapfrogging NIC.
KCCA found no resistance in humbling Posta Netball Club by 65-18, a win that took Fred Mugerwa’s charges to the top of the table for the first time this season.
However, among the top three, it’s only KCCA that scored few goals against the second-from-the-bottom placed Posta, netting only 65. Prison scored 78 and NIC had a record 101 goals scored against the same side which is the highest score in the league this season.
In the first quarter, KCCA netted 24 while Posta managed 6 but KCCA’s scoring rate kept on diminishing and in the last quarter, they scored only eight goals. The score by quarter was 24-06, 18-03, 15-05 and 08-04.
KCCA moved to the top of the table with 18 points from nine played games.
Prisons beat UPDF Netball Club 59-32 to move second on the table with 18 points but only the goal average that separates them from KCCA.
Police Netball Club, in the opening game of the day, beat Busia Greater Lions 44-34.
With the last MTN Busoga bicycle races concluded today in Bunanumba county in Bugadde town, spirits are high among sports lovers in the region as they prepare for the final competitions of the MTN Sponsored Obugaali Bwa Masaza in Busoga Kingdom amongst the 11 counties of Busoga Kingdom.
The finals that are slated for the 17th of this month shall be graced by the Kyabazinga of Busoga, His Majesty William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV.

According to the Busoga Kingdom Sports Minister, Amin Bossa, each of the 11 counties have successfully held county-level competitions and identified the 10 outstanding cyclists who will represent their counties at the finals.
“The bicycle races have been well-received by the people of Busoga and we are now training for the final races that shall be held in Jinja later this month. We thank MTN Uganda for its commitment towards investing in our people,” Bbosa said.

“We are pleased that despite being the first bicycle racing engagement in the Kingdom, people have turned up and appreciate cycling as a sport,” Isaraza said, “MTN Uganda is strongly grounded in the belief that businesses and communities are good together; Businesses only succeed if the communities in which they operate, succeed.”
Close to 100 cyclists from the counties of; Bugabula, Kigulu, Luuka, Butembe, Bukooli, Bunha, Busiki, Bulamogi, Bukono, Bunhole-Bunanhumba, and Bugweri shall tussle it out on the 17th of this month.
Worth noting is that MTN this year sponsored the 5th Busoga Cup football tournament. The successful 4 months-long football engagement was also part of an agreement between Telecom and the Kingdom in which MTN committed to socially and economically uplift the people of Busoga through sports, health, and education initiatives among others.

Netball Super League defending champions National Insurance Corporation (NIC) registered their second loss of the season falling to Weyonje.
Makindye Weyonje Netball Club reached a huge milestone since they joined Super League in the 2018-19 season as they managed to join the few clubs that have ever humbled NIC.
The Jesse Assiimwe-coached side managed to register a 40-36 deserved victory on Saturday at Kamwokya Community Sports Center.
The Makindye-based side had a slow start to the game. Weyonje trailed for three of four quarters. They came from four goals down to narrow the gap in the first quarter and it ended 9-8 in favour of NIC.
At half time, Weyonje was trailing by two goals, 20-18, then in the last two quarters, Weyonje gained momentum, winning both 10-09 and 12-07 respectively.
Despite the loss, NIC is still on top of the table with 16 points. It has played two games more than second and third-placed Prisons and KCCA respectively who also have 16 points each.
Makindye Weyonje remained in 5th position with 12 points.
Ugandan star Melissa Akullu and Lauren Baumgartner did the heavy lifting in the decisive fourth period, leading the Vanguard University women’s basketball team to a 53-45 road victory over Menlo on Saturday at Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
The duo combined to score 17 of the team’s 20 points in the fourth as the Lions overcame a one-point deficit entering the final 10 minutes.
Both players finished with 18 points – and Akullu pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Baumgartner added a season-high tying nine boards, five assists and four steals.
Vanguard University held a 49-38 edge on the glass, turning 19 offensive caroms into a 13-8 advantage in second chance points.
Menlo came in having averaged 84.6 points in three previous conference games. The Lions held the Oaks 39 points below their average. Menlo shot just 31.0 (18-of-58) percent from the field.
The Lions also impacted the game at the free throw line, hitting on 17-of-22 overall and taking 18 more attempts than the Oaks.
Defense, rebounding and free throw shooting masked Vanguard University’s shooting struggles. The Lions managed just 27.1 (16-of-59) percent field goal efficiency, including 21.1 (4-of-19) percent from distance.
Menlo received a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds from Kiara Brown. Vivian Woo added 15 points and seven boards.
Vanguard scratched out the win with only seven players. Four of five Lions that started played at least 33 minutes in helping the team improve to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Menlo fell to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
The Uganda Netball national team She Cranes will face top teams in New Zealand and nemesis Trinidad and Tobago in pool D of the upcoming 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.
Uganda together with Australia, England, Jamaica, New Zealand, and South Africa qualified for the World Cup due to their world ranking.
The four countries carrying the hopes of Africa are South Africa, Malawi, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Eleven-time world champion Australia is in pool A with Tonga, Zimbabwe, and Fiji.
Pool B is made up of England, Malawi, Scotland, and Barbados and the last group will see New Zealand face off against Uganda, Singapore, and Trinidad & Tobago.
The 2023 Netball World Cup will take place in Cape Town from 28 July – 6 August 2023, all 60 matches will be broadcast by both SuperSport and SABC.
The first edition of the long awaited MTN Busoga masazacycling competition has continued to gain momentum with more cyclists turning up to represent their counties in the races that commenced early this week.
The Bugabula race began at 11:30 with Yassin Yanga winning the 30 kilometer race in 1hr 12min 04 seconds, beating his next opponent Hakim Dakasi by three minutes.
Wycliffe Bataze completed the third position to hand on lookers a beautiful and emotional scene in the heart of Kamuli town.
Each of the winners walked away with a cash prize having booked their slots in the forthcoming final competitions set to be held on the 17th of this month.
Wilson Mugoya who is in charge of the competitions said that this year’s competition will give more appetite for more riders to compete in the next editions thanks to MTN Uganda the main sponsors.
“As the first edition of the competition in Busoga, we are impressed with the turn up. We believe nxt year will be even better after people have fully appreciated this exciting sport,” Mugoya said.
The Busoga Kingdom bicycle races kicked off this week with the opening races held in Kigulu and Bunha counties. Yesterday’s races took place in Butembe and Luuka district.
Jane Asinde has been named the American Athletic Conference (ACC) Player of the Week.
The Wichita State Shockers forward had a huge weekend in Los Angeles against the University of Montana and Loyola Marymount University.
Asinde averaged 21 points, 17 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and a steal while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field in Wichita State’s two wins.
The Ugandan star had a 20-point and career-high 19-rebound double-double in the 78-69 overtime win over the Lady Griz on Friday.
Asinde has played four games so far this season and has a double-double in three games.
