ISF World School Games 2022 – International Schools Sports (Swimming):

Olympian Kirabo Namutebi will lead the team of Ugandan swimmers for the forthcoming International Schools Sports championship in Normandy city, France.

Namutebi who was part of Uganda’s team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan will make the 8-man side to France.

Other female swimmers on the team include Esther Daisy Atto (GreenHill Academy), Swagiah Mubiru (Aga Khan School) and Karla Princess Mugisha (GreenHill Academy).

Male swimmers:

The male swimmers on the team are; Ampaire Namanya Nimusiima (GreenHill Academy), John Kafumbe (Heritage International School), Jordan Paulsen Settumba (Aga Khan School) and Joshua Elijah Lumonya Wabwire (Aga Khan School).

Other disciplines:

Uganda will also be represented in Badminton, Basketball (3X3), Table Tennis and Athletics. These games are scheduled to take place from the 14th to 24th May 2022.

State Minister of Sports Hon. Denis Hamson Obua will lead the Uganda delegation to France. The team is expected to depart the country on Friday afternoon.

Two amateur golfers Grace Kasango and Canary Kabise have graduated to the professional golf ranks.

This follows their impressive performances at the 2022 Uganda Golf Club (UGC) captain’s Bell tournament held in Kampala city.

Kasango, a golfer from Jinja Golf Club made the grade after an impressive 146 total gross score in 36 holes played over two days at the par 72-UGC course.

Over the two rounds, Kasango scored an identical 1-over par 73.

“I am excited that I have joined the professional category of golf after so many years of trying. I will maintain my training regime to further improve my game,” Kasango remarked.

During round one, Kasango scored three birdies on holes 1, 3 and 11 (ball pool). He then scored 12 pars (2,4,5,6,7,8,9,13,14,15, 16 and 18) with boggy scores on 2, 10, 12, 16 and 17.

On day two, he also had three birdies on holes 1, 3 and 13. His 11 pars came on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 17 and 18 as the four boggies were played on 2, 7, 11 and 16.

Mehta Club member Kabise on the other hand had a false start with 7-over 79 on day one before posting the day’s best joint score of 3-under 69, same as professional Adolf Muhumuza.

Other amateurs who took part included Samuel Kato (155), Denis Kabalira (156), Tom Jingo (158), Fred Nkuranga (158), Clovis Kasangaki (161), Nasser Mackie (161), Michael Tumusiime (163), Bulhan Matovu (166), Edgar Muzahura (171) and Ashraf Bagalana (176).

Deo Akope won the professional category with a combined 140 gross mark in two rounds, a stroke better than second placed Rodell Gaita.

Both Kasango and Kabise can make their long awaited professional debut at the upcoming Noble Mayombe Memorial Tournament in Fort Portal city, only after clearing the mandatory $100 registration fee.

Uganda Professional Golf Association (UPGA) now has over 40 members with two females; Flavia Namakula and Irene Nakalembe.

First son also Commander of Land Forces (UPDF) Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has revealed the Government of Uganda will refurbish Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

Muhoozi says the transformation will take place in a bid to improve sport in the country.

“I’m glad to announce on behalf of my father, H.E. @KagutaMuseveni, that the government of Uganda will completely refurbish Lugogo Indoor Stadium,” he wrote on social media.

“The whole place will be refurbished.”

Lugogo complex was opened in 2010 by President Yoweri Museveni, but later after some few games of basketball action, it was suspended after the turf developed patches.

The renovation was completed in August 2010 when a Dutch firm, Descol sports services, finished installing the multi- purpose floor that will be used by basketball, boxing, table tennis and volleyball.

The Lugogo Sports Complex is Uganda’s oldest and biggest indoor sports facility, which was constructed in 1954 and officially opened in 1962.

It is used for games like basketball, boxing, table tennis, badminton and volleyball.

Commonwealth Games 2022:

The medals which will be presented at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham city have been officially unveiled.

They were received by athletes including seven-time Paralympic athletics gold medallist Hannah Cockroft, who is set to compete at the Commonwealth Games for the first time.

An all-female group led by Amber Alys, who won a competition organized by the School of Jewellery and Birmingham 2022, designed the medals.

The design process took 15 months to complete and they are 63 millimetres in diameter and 74.3mm in length.

Gold and silver medals weigh approximately 150 grams, while the bronze are 130 grams.

The medals also feature an adjustable ribbon to accommodate athletes of all sizes, which has been designed by Francesca Wilcox.

A total of 1,875 medals have been struck by Toye, Kenning and Spencer, a company based in Birmingham’s renowned Jewellery Quarter.

“We really thought about the athletes when designing the medals – the connection between athletes and the journey they go on to achieve their dream of standing on top of the podium. What [the designers] wanted to do is make something so that athletes who might have visual impairments could actually feel and touch [them],” project lead Raidene Carter said.

Since inception of the Commonwealth Games, a total of 10249 medals have been awarded.

Of these, 3323 are gold, 3316 silver and 3610 bronze.

Uganda has won 55 medals in total at the Commonwealth Games. 16 are gold and silver apiece with 23 bronze medals.

2022 Uganda Golf Club (UGC) | Professionals:

Deo Akope has claimed the 2022 Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Captain’s Bell professional event at the par-72 Kitante club in Kampala.

Akope scored 1-under 71 on the closing round of the two day’s championship, following his earlier 3-under 68 during day one on Thursday.

Day one leader Rodell Gaita who had posted 4-under 68 slid to second position after returning 1-over 73 in the second 18 holes.

Phillip Kasozi was third with a combined 143 gross in 36 holes after returning level par 72 and 1-under 71 during day one and two respectively.

Ronald Rugumayo finished fourth overall with an identical 1-under 71 over two rounds for a combined score of 144.

The top ten had two amateurs Grace Kasango and Canary Kabise.

Kasango, a towering golfer from Jinja Club scored 73 apiece in both rounds to finish 5th overall but will not partake of the Shs 10,000,000 total kitty from the sponsors.

Kabise scored 79 and the joint best score on day two (3-under 69).

The other pro golfers who made the cut were Abbey Bagalana (146), Adolf Muhumuza (146), Joseph Mawejje (148), Martin Ochaya (148) and Denis Anguyo (149).

The main event will take place on Saturday, 7th May 2022 with tee-off as early as 6 AM to accommodate the overwhelming numbers registered.

There will be an official prize giving ceremony later to reward the exceling performers per group.

All is set for the 2022 East and Central Africa Clubs Netball Championship.

The tournament will be hosted by Uganda at the Kamokya Community Sports Center starting on Sunday, 8th May, and will run until 15th May.

Local clubs NIC (Defending Champions), Prisons, KCCA, and UPDF will be joined by those from Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar for the week-long championship.

The tournament was officially launched today at the Uganda Netball Federation offices in Old Kampala and in attendance were members of the organizing committee Rosette Kaala (chairperson) and Francis Banya, the federation CEO.

“We are excited as UNF to be hosting the East and Central Clubs Championship. This is one tournament of great significance to the development of the game in the region,” Banya said.

Isaac Afidra turned in a man-of-the-match performance as Power edged Ndejje University Angels in the National Basketball League at MTN Arena in Lugogo.

Afidra made a game-winning layup as time elapsed and was deservedly named player of the match after stuffing the stat sheet with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Innocent Ochera scored a game-high 19 points, while Nasser Gudoi had 12 points.

Haron Alinaitwe (15), Cikom Monybai (13), and Livingston Kimambo (11) all scored in double figures for Ndejje in a losing effort.

It was the eighth win for Power who move second with an 8-3 record for the season. Meanwhile, Ndejje University Angels suffered their fifth loss in eight games thus far.

In other games, Tonny Drilleba scored a game-high 28 points as City Oilers rolled over Tropical Royals, 95-55.

Martin Buluma grabbed a 20 points and 16 rebounds double-double as KCCA Panthers extended Falcons winless run this season.

Ines Kanyamunza had 22 points for KIU Rangers in the 54-48 win over Magic Stormers.

UCU Lady Canons eased past A1 Challenge with Tracy Namugosa scoring 22 points in a commanding 90-53 win.

Nam Blazers suffered their fourth loss of the season in the National Basketball League.

The side season by many as challengers to City Oilers throne this term lost 73-67 to UPDF Tomahawks on Saturday at YMCA in Wandegeya.

It was a second consecutive loss having fallen to UCU Canons at the MTN Arena in Lugogo on Firday night.

The Blazers were up by 10 points going into the last quarter but collapsed in the fourth in which they scored just 8 to UPDF’s 29.

David Okello was Blazers’ tormentor in chief with a huge double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds, earning himself the player of the match honour.

Brian Opiyo and Arthur Wanyoto had 12 and 11 points respectively for UPDF.

Paul Odongo scored 20 points, Amisi Saidi and Richard Ongom had 16 and 12 in that order for the Blazers.

In other games played on the day, Denis Tom Omara scored a game-high 23 points, Juma Osman and Allan Nandala added 17 and 12 points respectively as Tropical Royals stunned KIU Titans 87-73.

Maker Mayen’s game-high 22 points were not enough as Victoria University lost to Power 74-64.

Peter Sifuma’s 23 points and 10 rebounds double-double led UCU Canons to a 70-52 win over Our Saviour.

Diana Letaru scored 24 points and picked 13 rebounds as Magic Stormers beat Angels 51-37.

UCU Canons edged Namuwongo Blazers in the National Basketball League game played on Friday night at the MTN Arena in Lugogo.

The clash between the sides seen as challengers to City Oilers went down to the wire and had to be decided in the final minute of the game.

Blazers were guilty of committing two costly turnovers that handed the game to UCU down the stretch.

Peter Sifuma netted two free-throws to draw UCU level 62-62 inside the last minute of the game. The center later picked a defensive rebound after off Daniel Juuko’s miss to set offense running through Jerry Kayanga who was sent on the line and the guard netted both throws to put UCU up by two with 00:29 on the clock.

Jjuko then turned over and Sifuma finished off a quick UCU transition with a lay up to widen the gap to four points with 10 seconds on the clock.

The Blazers went back for another timeout, and on return, Ikong’s inbound was stolen by Sudi Ulanga who ran down the clock.

Sifuma finished the game with a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds to take home the player of the match award.

Jerry Kayanga scored 16 points while Lwabaga Ibanda had 14 for UCU who were without point guard Fayed Bbale.

Amisi Saidi came off the bench to score 15 points, Chuol Nyuot and Paul Odong added 14 and 13 respectively in the losing effort.

Syrus Kiviiri made a cameo appearance for the first time this season after nursing a knee injury.

UCU Canons tightens their grip on the top of the table with nine wins from 10 games.

It’s the third loss for the Blazers who were also beaten by JKL Dolphins and Our Saviour.

Uganda Netball Federation held an awards dinner on Tuesday night at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

The now vibrant federation headed by Sarah Babirye Kityo was holding such as an event that celebrates and honours netball talents from across the divisions for the first time.

Weyonje Netball Club’s Goal Defender Shakirah Nassaka was the biggest winner on the night as she was named the Best Player of the Season.

Nassaka beat her teammate and the season’s top scorer Asinah Kabendela as well as league winner Margret Baagala (NIC) to the top gong.

Other Winners

Bashir Matovu (SMASH Netball Club) was named the league MVP despite his side finishing sixth on the ten-team log. He shook off competition from Moses Mugisha (Prisons NC) and John Kizito John of league winners Kampala University.

Sandra Nambirige (KCCA Netball Club) took the Promising Player Award, Shadia Nassanga Ssegujja (KCCA Netball Club) took home the Most Improved Player of the Season award and the Presidential Award went to former UNF President Rebecca Kavulu.

Vincent Kiwanuka (NIC) was named the Best Coach and Jackson Kayira (Head of Media at the federation) was awarded the Best UNF Employee.
