Uganda’s City Oilers started their Basketball Africa League (BAL) Elite 16 campaign on a strong note, defeating Fox Basketball 77-47 at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Thursday.

The Oilers established a significant 18-point lead (24-6) after the first quarter and maintained a comfortable 23-point advantage (44-21) at halftime.

The intensity increased in the third quarter, with City Oilers extending their lead to 31 points (65-34).

Coach Andrew Tendo rotated his squad in the final quarter, introducing Rogers Dauna, Benjamin Kawuni, Allan Ssenkubuge, and young talent Waleed Ali to secure the victory.

Germaine Roebuck led the Oilers with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Israel Oyoro (13 points), Petty Parish (12 points), and Falando Jones (11 points) also contributed significantly to the dominant performance.

Stephen Garbrah was the only Fox player to reach double figures, scoring 11 points.

Both teams return to action tomorrow. Fox will face Urunani at 12:30 PM, while City Oilers will take on Matero Magic at 3:00 PM.

The Road to BAL 2025 continues this week with the East Division Elite 16 tournament in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Ugandan champions City Oilers are eying a third appearance in the league.

The Oilers have competed in the Basketball Africa League regular season for the past two seasons, though they have not advanced to the playoffs on both occasions.

Andrew Tendo’s charges who will face stiff competition from Nairobi City Thunder and Urunani have to finish in the top two at the six-day event to return to Africa’s biggest stage of club basketball.

Oilers made reinforcements to the squad adding Nigerian center Isreal Otobo while Falando Jones and Germaine Roebuck Jr returned to the side. The trio along with Parrish Petty, who inspired Oilers to their tenth championship, will lead the charge in Nairobi.

Fayed Bbale and league MVP Titus Lual Odeke lead the home-based cast on the team.

Over 110 golfers braved the morning rain to take the lakeside Entebbe Golf Course on Saturday for the November MTN Monthly Tee.

Robert Sabiiti topped the field emerging as the overall winner of the penultimate round of the MTN-sponsored event.

Sabiiti returned to the clubhouse with a nett score of 68.

In the women’s category, Hellen Peace scored 72 nett to top the category with the club lady captain Jovia Tugume taking the runner-up spot with 73 nett.

With her score in the ultimate round, Tugume ascends to the top of the women’s order of merit with the ultimate round set for December 14 when the overall winners will be crowned.

In the men’s Group A, Jude Ochieng beat Andrew Baguma by a stroke while Richard Oloka required countback to win Group B ahead of Peter Magona.

2024 Kinyara Golf Open (Gross – Amateurs):

Joseph Kasozi claimed the 26th edition of the Kinyara Golf Open at the par-71 Kinyara Golf Course in Masindi.

Playing off handicap -3, Kasozi scored a total of 216 gross over 54 holes played from three rounds to net his first-ever triumph in this open.

“I am excited… This is my first victory at the Kinyara Golf Open on a golf course that made me who I am today. It is humbling,” said Kasozi.

Kasozi was 11 shots clear of second-placed Ivan Sekulima and 16 shots adrift from the third-placed golfer Abdullah Kakooza.

In the 54 holes, Kakooza recorded a total of 13 birdies, 19 pars, 9 bogies and 3 double bogies.

He opened the tournament with 2-over-73 in round one.

“I broke my driver on hole 6 during the first round but soldiered on with the iron and remained in the lead. The rains disturbed us during round two but it was a blessing for me because the wet conditions favour my game” he spoke.

On round two, he played his best golf with 1-under-70 and completed the third round with another 2-over-73.

“This victory is special because it gives me some important points for the world amateur golf system and I look forward to the same ripe form” Kasozi remarked.

Lake Victoria Golf Resort and Spa member Ivan Sekulima came second with 76, 75, 76 (227) and Abdullah Kakooza of Mary Louise Simkins Memorial Golf course in Namulonge was third on the leaderboard with 75, 76, 81 (232).

In total, there were 26 amateurs in the competition.

Professionals:

Grace Kasango was the outstanding professional in the paid ranks category with 143 gross in 36 holes.

This was Kasango’s second victory at the Kinyara Golf Open in the professional docket after the 2022 victory.

Tom Jjingo (145), Ronald Bukenya (146), Saidi Mawa (149), Joseph Mawejje (149), Adolf Muhumuza (150), Emma Ogwang (151), Silver Opio (151), Samuel Kato (152) and Peter Ssendaula (152) all made the treasured cut for the Shs 10,000,000 kitty.

Seventeen professional golfers participated in total with over 100 in the subsidiary cluster.

Uganda women’s national golf team was flagged off for the 2024 All Africa Golf Championships in Morocco.

The tournament tees off with the official practice round on 27th November at the Tazegzout Golf Course in Agadir and will climax on 30th November with 54 holes played.

State minister for sports Hon. Peter Ogwang flagged off the team at the Uganda Golf Club, Kampala on Friday, 22nd November 2024.

“Go and represent the country gallantly. We are proud of you and believe in yourselves,” said Ogwang.

Captain Peace Kabasweka, Martha Babirye and the long-hitting Meron Kyomugisha are the three players on the team.

These will be joined by the head coach Flavia Namakula, team manager Gloria Mbaguta, Dorren Mwesigye (president of Uganda Ladies Golf Union) and Wendy Angudeyo (captain, Uganda Golf Club).

“We have prepared very well with good training at the Lugazi Hills and Country Club as well as the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa courses. These players have been carrying their own golf kits and we tackled every aspect of the game. We have the right yardages for the course in Agadir and we are ready for action,” head coach Namakula stated.

Kabasweka, Uganda’s captain, expressed readiness for the All-Africa Championship.

“We are ready mentally and physically for the tournament in Morocco. We thank the coach and the leadership of Uganda Ladies Golf Union for the support”, Kabasweka revealed.

There are now 21 countries confirmed for this tournament.

Last year, Uganda finished fourth in the same tournament in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) announced Tuesday that Cricket Cranes’ second string side (Uganda A) will compete at the Emerging Nations T20 Series in Kigali, Rwanda, from November 19 to 29, 2024.

The tournament features teams; Rwanda XI, Rwanda A, and Zimbabwe Emerging which will provide a competitive platform for rising stars on the continent.

Uganda A is led by seasoned campaigners Roger Mukasa (captain) and Simon Ssesazi who are looking to regain form and emerging U-19 talents aiming to make a mark.

UCA Selector and Team Manager, Richard Okia, emphasised the importance of this tournament.

“This series aligns perfectly with our mission to build a high-performance culture and deepen the pathways from grassroots cricket to the senior national team. It offers players invaluable exposure to international-level competition, allowing us to identify future stars and build squad depth for Uganda Cricket’s long-term success,” Okia noted.

Davis Turinawe, the Uganda A Coach for this tour, highlighted the dual benefit of nurturing young talents that have come through the development pathways and providing a platform for experienced players to refine their skills.

“We believe in creating opportunities for our players to thrive. Competing against teams like Zimbabwe Emerging and Rwanda’s best will push our players to new heights and simulate the demands of senior international cricket,” said Tuinawe.

National Volleyball League | Results

KCCA Volleyball Club secured a 3-0 victory against Elyon Volleyball Club in the National Volleyball League at Sport-S grounds, Nsambya, on Sunday.

Elyon suffered their second loss on the bounce since suffering the big low of Silver Owinjo being forced out due to a knee injury.

KCCA edged Elyon by two points (26-24) as the former sailed through the first set of the game.

Despite, Elyon’s massive fight in the second set, KCCA’s experience came to play to win the period by three points (25-22).

Elyon ran out of steam in the final set as they lost the period by four points (25-21).

The youthful Elyon side struggled to deal with KCCA’s hot spikes which kept them in the chasing park.

Elyon lacked an attacker to step into Owinjo’s shoes, and that’s something the coach has to deal with going forward.

Sport-S Ladies edged UCU Lady Doves 3-2 in the National Volleyball League encounter at Sport-S Grounds, Nsambya on Sunday.

UCU Lady Doves took an early lead with a dominant first set with six points (25-19).

However, Sport-S Ladies rallied back to claim the second set with seven points (25-18) in front of a loud crowd.

The third set saw UCU Lady Doves return to the driving seat in the close duel with a difference of two points (35-33).

But the hosts responded emphatically to level matters (25-20) before they sealed the win in the final period (15-13).

In the other ladies’ affair, KCB-Nkumba Ladies secured a well-deserved 3-0 victory against Elyon Ladies.

National Volleyball League | Results

Nemostars edged Ndejje 3-2 in the National Volleyball League encounter at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Wednesday evening.

It was a close and exciting encounter as two sides locked horns in a five-set thriller.

Nemostars got out of their blocks early to triumph in the first set with a difference of 12 points (25-13).

However, Ndejje Sharks returned to the game restoring parity after triumphing the second set (25-22).

Nemostars regained the lead after the third quarter with a (25-17) lead but Ndejje responded emphatically with a (25-21) victory thus setting up the fifth set.

The experienced side Nemostars edged Ndejje 15-12 to clinch the closely contested game.

At the end of the day, all the proceedings from the game were given to Elyon Volleyball Club in support of Silver Owinjo’s treatment.

Nemostars return to winning ways after being edged out by Sport-S in the previous game.Nemostars took the first set with six points (25-19). Elyon struggled with reception as the Nemostars capitalised on their experience.

Despite Elyon’s fight to return to the game, Nemostars were the better side, thus securing a 3-point lead (25-22) at the end of the second set.

Elyon suffered a big blow after Silver Owinjo suffered a knee injury in the second set of the game.

It was an end-to-end set as the game concluded. Nemostars made several changes to utilise their bench before winning the game with six points (25-19).

Nemostars have now won four games and lost twice in six outings. The experienced side continues to chance a slot in the playoffs.
