Highlights: Chesang claimed the 4th Uganda Athletics Federation national trials posting 15:46:72 this year over 5000m. She later finished 11th in the Ethiopian Trials, Hengelo in 15:05:39. Chesang’s personal best is 15:05.39 over the 5000m. She posted this time at the Blankers-Koen Stadion, Hengelo on June 8th this year.

Highlights: Chebet has represented Uganda at the World Championships twice both at the 2019 Doha and 2017 London events. At fhe Africa Games in Morocco two years ago, she finished 5th again over the 1500m. In May this year, Chebet finished 2nd at the Next Generation Athletics in Nijmegen. She posted 15:04:89. 10 days later, Chebet crossed the tape 14th at the Hengelo Ethiopian Trials in 15:25:15.

Highlights: She represented Uganda at the 2019 World Athletics Championships, competing in women’s 5000 metres. Chelangat set a Ugandan national record of  15:00.61 in the 5000 metres in Nijmegen on June 2019. Last year, Chelangat finished 9th in 5000m at the Kip Keino Classic that took place at the  Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi.

Mary Kom, the face of India’s boxing contingent, faced a shocking defeat — split decision — at the hands of Colombia’s Ingrit Valencia to bow out from the ongoing Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. Valencia won the bout 3-2. Valencia advanced to the quarter-finals of the showpiece event after defeating Mary Kom in the women’s flyweight (48-51kg) category event. Valencia got off to a flyer as she won the first round. Four out of the five judges gave her a 10 while one had a 9 for her showing. [The Siasat Daily]

Swimmer Sajan Prakash finished second in his Heat but that was not enough to advance the semifinals of the men’s 100m butterfly event as India’s underwhelming campaign at the Tokyo Olympics ended here on Thursday. Prakash, who also competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, finished second in the second-slowest heat with a time of 53.45s. Japan swept Thursday’s judo events at the Tokyo Olympics, with Shori Hamada winning a gold medal in the women’s under 78-kilogram event and Aaron Wolf claiming the men’s under 100-kg title at Nippon Budokan.Hamada defeated Madeleine Malonga of France shortly before Wolf completed an outstanding performance by the Olympic host, prevailing in a nail-biting final over South Korean Cho Gu Ham. World No.1 Tennis player Novak Djokovic on Thursday defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets to enter the semifinals of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. He completely dominated the match with 6-2 and 6-0 to continue his ruthlessness in top-flight tennis in 2021. He is chasing a golden slam having never won at Olympic singles. His previous best is winning a bronze medal in 2008 at the Olympics. Djokovic will next face either Alexander Zverev or Jeremy Chardy in the semis. [Inside Sport]

Name: Winnie Nanyondo

Age: 27

Country of birth: Uganda

Residence Country: Uganda

Background: Nanyondo studied Industrial design at Kampala University, Uganda. She almost quit running after finishing high school in 2011 because she had no money and was about to enroll at university. She had to balance work at her mother’s salon. Then her coach left for the US and she was left alone. A friend was willing to help her though she had to walk long distances to be able to train. Later it paid off.

Highlights: Nanyondo has managed four podium finishes in 2021. She claimed the Indoor 1500m at Campeonato de España de Clubes in Barcelona (4:17:36). 8 days before, she had crossed the tape in 2nd position over the same distance at the Karlsruhe, Europahalle, Karlsruhe – Indoor Meeting. At the Spanish Club Meeting, Nanyondo also won the 1500m race on June 13th this year. Her major podium finish came at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games when she came 3rd (bronze) in 2:01:38 over the 800m distance.

Highlights: Chemutai represented Uganda at the 2017 World Championships finishing tenth in the final. He featured at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games where finished 5th in the 3000m men’s Steeplechase in 8:19:83. At the 2016 World U20 Championships in Poland, he made 7th over the same distance, running 8:37:76.

Star gymnast Simone Biles cited her mental health concerns for withdrawing from the individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympics. “It’s been a long Olympic process, it’s been a long year,” she told reporters after she stopped competing in the team event. “And I think we’re just a little bit too stressed out.” Biles’ teammates applauded her decision to take care of her mental well-being. The U.S. team of Stefanie Dolson, Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young won the first women’s gold medal in the new Olympic sport of 3-on-3 basketball. Plum scored all five of her points early to help the Americans take the lead and they held on for an 18-15 win over the team representing the Russian Olympic Committee. [The Denver Post]

Japan’s badminton world number one Kento Momota lost in the first round at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, a day after Japanese tennis superstar Naomi Osaka also crashed out. Unseeded South Korean Heo Kwang-hee beat Momota 21-15, 21-19, ending the favourite’s bid for the gold medal after just two games. Momota was appearing in his first Olympics, having been banned for gambling in an illegal casino just months before the 2016 Rio Games. [Time of India]

Egypt’s U23 national team have reached the quarter-finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after a tough 2-0 victory over Australia in the final round of the group-stages. The Young Pharaohs are placed in the group of death alongside European champions Spain, Argentina, and Australia. They opened the group-stages with a heroic 0-0 draw with Spain, before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Argentina to put their qualifcation hopes to the knockout stage in jeopardy. [Kingfut]

Bombers captain Shadiri Bwogi has apologized to Ugandans for having exited the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the hands of Georgian boxer Eskerkhan Madiev on Tuesday.

Bwogi lost the close round of 16 men’s welterweight (63-69kg) bout by split decision after the judges scored 29-27, 28-28, 26-30, 26-30, 26-30 in favour of Madiev.

The 24 year-old expressed his gratitude towards the support he received before breaking down to say “sorry” for his misfortune.

In a tweet Bwogi said; “Victory have [sic] many fathers but Defeat is an Orphan, thanks to all my people who wished me well in the on going Olympic games and am sorry for the lose [sic],its been a great experience, next time better.👏Inshallah.”

Bwogi was Uganda’s last man standing in the boxing category before joining Catherine Nanziri who lost to Japanese soldier Tsukimi Namiki and David Ssemujju who bowed out at the hands of Younes Nemouchi. 

Reigning Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles is out of the team finals after apparently suffering an injury during the vault.The 24-year-old U.S. star, considered to be the greatest gymnast of all time, huddled with a trainer after landing her vault. She then exited the competition floor with the team doctor. Biles returned several minutes later with her right leg wrapped. She took off her bar grips, and hugged teammates Grace McCallum, Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles before putting on a jacket and sweatpants.The Americans will be forced to finish the rest of the competition without her, severely hampering their bid to claim a third straight Olympic title. Leading by Jolanda Neff, the Swiss trio have made a clean sweep of the podium in the women’s mountain bike race at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Tuesday. Neff pulled out the front on the very first lap of the five-lap 20.55 kilometers race at the Izu Mountain Bike Course, clocking a winning time of one hour 15 minutes and 46 seconds for the gold. Neff was happy after winning her first Olympic gold. “It was my goal for today to enjoy it and have fun out there. I found a good rhythm, I could ride all the technical sections perfectly well and I could find a good rhythm in the uphill. It was such a good race and an incredible result for the whole team,” she said. Her compatriots Sina Frei and Linda Indergrand took the silver and bronze medal respectively. The U.S. Women’s National Team drew Australia 0-0 in its final group stage match of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, securing a spot in the knockout rounds. The result gave the USA a second-place finish in Group G and a berth to the quarterfinals against the winner of Group F, likely either Netherlands or Brazil. The match will be played in Yokohama at International Stadium Yokohama, just south of Tokyo, on Friday. [US Soccer]

Takanori Nagase defeated Mongolia’s Saeid Mollaei in the men’s 81-kilogram final, snatching another judo gold for Japan at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday. Nagase, an Olympic bronze medalist in Rio five years ago, became the first Japanese to win this event since Makoto Takimoto achieved the feat at the 2000 Sydney Games. [Kyodo News]

Ugandan swimmer Ambala Atuhaire Ogola missed qualification to the semifinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics men’s 100m freestyle after posting 54:23 on Tuesday. 

Ambala finished 7th out of 8 and his time overall wasn’t sufficient to squeeze him among the top 16 overall from all 8 heats of the swimming category. 

The 20 year old’s result, 1:69 behind heat 2 winner Rosafio Danilo of Kenya meant the first time the distance has been attempted by a Ugandan at the Olympics since Los Angeles 1984.

Italian Ceccon Thomas, American Dressel Calaeb and Australian Chalmers Kyle go into the semis as top favorites after managing 47:71, 47:73 and 47:47 respectively.
