Black Pirates bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to runaway leaders Heathens by beating KOBs on Saturday at King’s Park.

The Sea Robbers edged KOBs 13-11 in a closely contested game thanks to the kicking boot of skipper Ivan Magomu.

Isaac Massa scored the opening try of the game that was converted by Magomu and KOBs responded through Ian Munyani.

Fly-half Joseph Aredo put the visitors in the lead with a couple of penalties to give KOBs a four-point (11-07) cushion at the break.

However, Aredo’s opposite delivered off the tee in the second half slotting through three penalties that earned Pirates the win and four points.

The victory for the Sea Robbers means the two teams swapped places. Pirates moved to second on the table with 68 points and KOBs dropped to third with 67 points.

Heathens RFC will almost certainly be crown crowned champions again after winning the title decider against Black Pirates on Saturday.

The sides went into the clash at King’s Park knowing victory for either side would have a say on the title but a Heathens win would more or less guarantee them the title.

The defending champions quickly put the hosts on the back foot, getting the reward with Reynolds Kato dotting down at the corner.

Pirates captain Ivan Magomu cut the deficit with a long penalty but winger Norbert Okeny collected from Aaron Ofoyrwoth’s kick to score Heathens’ second try at the opposite corner.

Pirates trailed by four points at the break thanks to another flawless penalty from Magomu.

Pirates took a 13-10 lead at the start of the second half thanks to Kelvin Balagadde who carried strong to score the try and Magomu who added the extra two points off the boot.

Heathens responded putting Pirates under pressure and they scored through Aaron Ofoyrwoth with Chris Lubanga converting.

Lubanga added three penalties to put the game out of Pirates’ reach with Timothy Kisiga’s late try being just consolation as Heathens walked away with four points.

Black Pearls’ sensational season came to an end on Saturday when they were crowned URU Women’s XVs League Champions.

Despite Avengers not honouring the last fixture at King’s Park, Black Pearls had already won the league the previous weekend following the 75-12 win over Thunderbird.

The triumph in 15 rugby means, Pearls have swept everything there has been to win over the past year having won the 7s and 10s tournaments last year.

Black Pearls coach Hellen Buteme says the journey to the top started a number of years ago with a lot of work going into the project.

“Black Pearls’ journey to the top didn’t begin this year or last year, it has been a journey of a number of years and it has been a patient journey,” Buteme said.

“I have been working with players, patiently building them, working on their skills and their roles on the pitch getting them to understand each other as well.

“The last two years we have kind of nailed (narrowed) things down and last year in December we started on our conditioning for 15s so the girls were lifting tyres three times a week and it was non-negotiable and they embraced it and we have seen it has paid off.

“What has helped us most is players’ love for the game and willingness to put in the hard work, to do what other people are not doing.”

Black Pearls clinched the women’s fifteen league title after beating Thunderbirds on Saturday at King’s Park in Bweyogerere.

The Helen Buteme-coached side obliterated Thunderbirds 75-12 to secure their first 15s title with a game to the end of the season.

Emilly Lekuru scored seven tries in the game, the first coming inside five minutes and the champions in waiting couldn’t look back.

The Black Pearls who won the reverse fixture at Kyadondo meant business as they scored for fun through Racheal Mufuwa (2), Grace Auma (3), and Bushira Namutebi. Charlotte Mudoola converted four of the thirteen tries.

All of Thunderbirds’ points came off the boot of Mary Kyoita as the Kyadondo outfit left King’s Park without entering the host’s try area.

Uganda Rugby Union has expressed readiness to host the 2022 Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Cup due April 23-24 at Kyadondo.

“Since 2020 we have been in and out of lockdown but we managed to bid for this tournament which is the biggest in Sevens on the Continent.

“It’s the Africa Cup of Nations for Sevens, it comes with the benefits of hosting a big tournament. Everything is being organized on top standard and we hope to host a wonderful tournament,” said Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe.

“We have ever won this tournament and that gives us more confidence that we can host it here and have the home advantage,” he added.

Fourteen (14) countries will be competing at this year’s event that will double not only as a qualifier to the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 in Cape Town, South Africa but also the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The other teams coming to Kampala for the tournament are Kenya, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Namibia, Zambia, Senegal, Ghana, Tunisia, Mauritius, Botswana, Burkina Faso, and two other teams that will be decided from a qualifier that will be held in Burundi from March 12-13.

Rugby Africa officially announced their calendar for the major tournaments to be played in 2022 and among them is the Africa Men’s 7s.

Uganda will be hosting the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Cup from 23rd-24th April at Kyadondo Rugby Ground in Kampala.

The Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe, speaking to the press on Thursday, said the country is ready to host the tournament and wants home advantage to count.

“We managed to bid for this tournament which is the biggest in Sevens on the continent.

“It’s the Africa Cup of Nations for Sevens [and] it comes with the benefits for hosting a big tournament. Everything is being organized on top standard and we hope to host a wonderful tournament,” said Kayangwe.

The tournament returns in Uganda for the first time since 2017 when Uganda’s Rugby 7s team beat Zimbabwe 10-7 in the final to defend their crown on home soil having won it in Kenya the previous year.

Zimbabwe won it in 2018 and Kenya clinched the title the following year beating Uganda 29-00 in the final. However, in 2020 and 2021, the tournament was not played due to Covid19.

“We have ever won this tournament and that gives us more confidence that we can host it here and have the home advantage,” Kayangwe added.

Former Rugby Cranes prop Alex Fred Mudoola has been appointed as the head coach of Uganda’s national 15s side.

Mudoola’s appointment was announced just after Rugby Africa had unveiled their 2022 tournament calendar which includes the Africa Cup, the first competition the former prop will be in charge of the side.

The 2007 African champion with a wealth of experience wants to take Rugby Cranes back to the glory days when he was an active player.

“I expect a challenge and will work hard to meet the targets set, make sure Uganda rugby goes back to where it used to be,” Mudoola said.

“What I bring to the table is a little experience, change a little how the team plays, add some grit to the players, some discipline, and some love for the game,” he added.

Uganda will take on Kenya in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup in July in France.
