Uganda Tennis Association will continue its path of success after winning at least a medal in each team event at the 2023 ITF CAT Zonals Championships.
The milestone was new following just one team in the medal bracket in Kigali last year.
Jonah Ssentongo, Latif Ssendyowa and Cillian Ndilima carried Uganda Boys U-14 to bronze, Olivia Nalubuula, Hilder Afwoyoroth and to bronze as well in the Girls category.
Maggie Flavia Namaganda, Abigail Nabasinga and Edna Lovinsa Nabiryo delivered silver in the Girls’ U-16 while- Troy Adrian Zziwa, Francis Derrick Agonzebwa and Nasser Ochom also replicated the same in the Boys’ U-16.
The team was guided by coaches Edward Odockcen and John Oduke who helped the youngsters mastermind the performances.

With stakes too high and all to fight for, Uganda managed to have a pair in the single’s finals of the tournament and also a pair in the doubles final.
The youngsters even had to face each other, case in point, Abdul Latif Sendoywa and Jonah Ssentongo who met in the Semifinals of the ITF/CAT 14 & Under Individual Championships, the former making the last hurdle.
Ssentongo appeared to be the star of the show as he earlier attracted the crowd with his relentless toughness against Eden Ayden Mbakuye of Burundi.

The excited home crowd was given top-tier entertainment as Jonah overcame his opponent in two sets 7-5/6-2.
Elsewhere, Troy Zziwa marked greater progress after earning silver in the 2019 12 & Under Championships in Nairobi, Kenya and onward to AJC Casablanca, Morocco by walking away with silver again.

Team Uganda in Burundi
Uganda Tennis Association (UTA) has intensified preparations for the 2023 ITF/CAT East Africa Junior Tennis Championships from 3rd to 17th January in Burundi, Bujumbura.
A team of boys and girls in the age group of Under 14 and Under 16 players are currently training and the backroom staff has been fortified with the arrival of Strength and Conditioning Coach Emmanuela Oroma and Sport Psychologist Edgar Kazibwe.
According to the Uganda Tennis Association, “One Team per age group per gender will automatically qualify for the Final Event of the Africa Junior Teams Championships (AJC) which will take place in May/June 2023.”
Coaches Edward Odockcen and John Oduke will be coaching the teams and travelling with the groups to Burundi as they seek to make a mark in the tournament.

The tournament is organised by the Confederation of African Tennis in Conjunction with the International Tennis Federation and Burundi Tennis Federation.
Successful Uganda Table Tennis players qualified to Commonwealth Games:
Four Ugandan female Table Tennis players qualified for the Commonwealth Games that will take place in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Florence Seera, Jemimah Nakawala, Parvin Nangonzi and Rita Nakhumitsa made the tournament following qualifiers held at the MTN Indoor Arena, Lugogo on Sunday, 29th May 2022.
Of these four players, two are teenagers; Nakawala, 12 and Nangonzi, 13 both at Nakasero Primary School in P6 and P7 respectively.
Seera topped the standings after 10 rounds with Nakawala coming second.
Nangonzi was third as the country’s top seed Nakhumitsa finished fourth in the rankings.
Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) president Robert Jjagwe expressed delight upon the successful completion of these trials.
UTTA will soon announce the top 4 ranking of trials. We therefore wish to encourage the players to continue training very hard to bring glory to Uganda in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The ranking series will serve to give us the final ranking of players ahead of the Birmingham games. We also thank all the coaches, sponsors and schools for the great support given to these players to prepare them for these final trials.

The Commonwealth Games will take place between 28th July to 8th August 2022 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Uganda will field a team in Table Tennis (girls), Rugby, Weightlifting, Netball and Athletics.
Three Ugandan Table Tennis players have qualified for the 2022 Africa Senior Championships slated for Algeria in October.
Seed one Sam Ankunda Mbabazi, seed two Benjamin Ebenezer Achuma and Jemimah Nakawala have all made the grade to the continental show piece.
This follows their qualification to the quarterfinals of the East and Central Africa championships on-going in Addis Ababa city, Ethiopia.
Mbabazi, 13 years old is a student of Kibuli Secondary School, Achuma is a 20-year-old university student at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) while Nakawala is a 12-year pupil at Table Tennis hub Nakasero Primary School.
These three players registered impressive victories against top Ethiopian opposition to reach the quarter-finals of the men’s singles championship.
The singles championship will continue on Sunday, 8th May 2022.
Fast-rising Ugandan star Boris Aguma will continue to develop his career in both mass communication and the sport of tennis after being awarded a scholarship to do both at Dillard University.
Under the U.S Mission Uganda Education program, Boris will study at the private, historically black university in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The 22-year old will travel in January to further pursue his career according to a statement released by U.S Mission Uganda on their social media platform.

“In Jan. 2022, Aguma will travel to the Flag of United States to play Tennis ball & study mass communications! Congrats! #EducationUSA.”

Aguma earned his first international ranking point after defeating Nigeria’s Joseph Imeh Ubon in the first round of the Uganda ITF Pro Futures 4 in 2018.
He has since registered 6 wins, 11 losses with an ATP Singles ranking of 1773 as of 2nd July 2018 and 1692 ITF Singles ranking as of 13 May 2019.
