Semifinal Results
Mwenge South and Kyaka counties have taken up the two spots in the Tooro Kingdom MTN Masaza Cup finals.
The two counties will face the epic showdown on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Buhinga Stadium, Fort Portal City.
Before the football showpiece the fans will be treated to a bicycle race, the Tooro Kingdom sports minister Micheal Wandera announced.
The winner of the bicycle race will be awarded UGX 1.5 million and the runners-up will take UGX 1 million.
How they reached the finals
Mwenge South beat Mwenge North 3-1 on aggregate. After a 1-1 stalemate in the first leg, Mwenge South turned up in the second leg and registered a 2-0 victory.
In the 44th minute, Solomon Wafula struck Mwenge South into the lead before Eric Mirembe doubled the lead in the second half.
The reigning champions, Kyaka County also leap-frogged Burahya to take the second slot in the highly anticipated finals.
In the first leg, the two sides fired blanks before playing to a nail-biting second leg a week later.
Kyaka’s custodian Geoffrey Mucunguzi was outstanding making continuous saves to carry his side to yet another final in a consecutive year.

Mwenge South held Mwenge South in a 1-1 stalemate in the Tooro Kingdom Masaza Cup on Saturday evening.
The two sides failed to break the knot in the first clash but they will be meeting in the second leg to decide who takes the tie away.
To reach the stage, Mwenge South led Group A with four points while Mwenge North maneuvered through Group B to keep sights on the silverware.
Tooro Kingdom in partnership with MTN Uganda organised the second edition of the kingdom’s Masaza championship that has attracted immense crowds.
Each team was given UGX 500,000 for preparation while the winner will walk away with an amount of UGX 5 million.
The tournament is running line in line with the Masaza bicycle race.
The 2023 MTN Tooro Masaza Cup has reached an exhilarating stage as three counties secured their spots in the semifinals with the other pending confirmation.
In the Group C matches played on Sunday at Karugutu Primary School Playground, it was intense battles all round in a bid to secure a spot in the semifinals.
In the first game, Burahya clashed with Bunyangabu with the former coming out victorious with a 1-0 scoreline.
The match between Ntoroko and Bunyangabu ended in a goalless draw while Ntoroko and Burahya played out a fierce 1-1 draw.
The four points Burahya earned on the day secured their place in the semifinals set to take place on Friday, July 28.
In the first semifinal match, Mwenge North will take on Mwenge South and in the second semifinal, Burahya will likely meet Kyaka (whose qualification is pending petition).
Last month, MTN Uganda and Tooro Kingdom partnered to organize an inter-county cycling competition dubbed “Obugaali bwa Masaza ga Tooro”.
The competition officially kicked off on Friday in Kyaka County, Kyegegwa District with 20 kilometers covered.
The starting point was Kibuye going through Kyegegwa town, Kakabara, and back to Kyegegwa.
The race was classified into two, that is Ordinary Bicycles (Maani Gakifuba) and Sports Bicycles with Aziz Ssempijja and Alvin Mulindwa the respective winners.
The competition continues on Sunday, 31st July 2022 in Mwenge South, Kyenjojo District.
The race will take place in all the nine (9) counties of Tooro Kingdom which include Kyaka (covered), Mwege North, Mwenge South, Fort Portal, Burahya, Bunyangabu, Kitagwenda, Kibale, and Ntoroko.
The grand final will happen on 4th September 2022 with Omukama Rukirabasaija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV flagging off the event at Karuzika in Fort Portal.

Kyaka were crowned champions of the first-ever MTN Tooro Masaza Cup after beating Bunyangabu FC 1-0 in a closely contested final on Friday.
Richard Mugume scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute of the game that was played at Buhinga Stadium in Fort Portal.
Kyaka walked away with five million shillings in prize money as the title winners. Bunyangabu, the runners-up, took home 3 million shillings.
The King of Tooro Kingdom, His Majesty, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV along with the Queen Mother of Tooro, Queen Best Kemigisa attended the match that fell on the eve of the King’s 30th birthday.
This tournament has generated a lot of excitement in our kingdom and has further brought the people of Tooro together. We thank MTN for organizing and funding this first-ever tournament and we look forward to the next season of this thrilling experience.

The Tooro Masaza tournament is part of MTN’s sponsorship package to the Kingdom following a partnership between the Telecom and the Kingdom in an endeavor to uplift the people of Tororo through leveraging sports alongside other social-economic engagements in health and education.

Tooro Kingdom has nine counties that include Ntoroko, Kibale, Bunyangabu, Kitagwenda, Mwenge North, Mwenge South, Kyaka, Fort Portal, and Burahya. All the counties participated in the tournament that has proved to be the hottest sporting activity in the Kingdom thus far.
The tournament final attracted thousands of people who paid 2,000/= via MTN MoMo and 4,000/= cash and the money was handed over to the kingdom to support development projects in Tooro Kingdom.
The MTN Tooro Masaza Tournament grand finale also doubled as King Oyo’s 30th birthday celebration. A birthday bash complete with fireworks and exciting performances by a lineup of top artists marked the end of the feverish football tournament as the King marked his new age, surrounded by his subjects and well-wishers.
Action in the MTN Uganda sponsored Tooro Masaza Cup continued over the weekend at different grounds in the Kingdom.
Burahya, Fort Portal City, Kyaka, and Mwenge South all registered at least one victory as the counties continue to tussle it out in the first-ever kingdom football tournament.
Group B matches were played at the Katoosa Playground on Friday with Mwenge South recording two wins, 1-0 against Kyaka and 2-1 over Mwenge North.
Kyaka registered a 2-1 win over Mwenge North to advance to the next stage of the tournament as runners-up in the group.
Meanwhile, King Oyo Sports Complex in Bukwali hosted Group C matches that saw Fort Portal City and Burahya qualifying for the next stage.
Fort Portal beat Ntoroko 3-0 and played to a goalless draw with Burahya to top the group while Burahya edged Ntoroko one-nil to advance as group runners-up.
Next Round
The six teams that advanced from the initial three groups are pooled into two groups of three with matches to be played this weekend and the top two in each group qualifying for the semifinals.
On Friday 1st April, Kibale, Fort Portal, and Kyaka counties will face off at the King Oyo Sports Complex in Bukwali while on Sunday 3rd April, Bunyangabu, Mwenge South, and Burahya counties will also battle for two semifinal spots at the Katoosa Playground.
The final of the tournament will be played on 15th April 2022.

The MTN-sponsored Tooro Kingdom Masaza Cup kicked off over the weekend with the official opening match between Bunyangabu and Kibale played at Kibiito Secondary School Playground.
The month-long tournament follows a partnership between MTN Uganda and Tooro Kingdom.
The Kingdom Prime Minister, Hon. Bernard Tungakwo officiated the tournament opening, saying that this year’s Football tournament was organized in partnership with telecom giant MTN because the king wanted to use sports as a platform to create awareness against the spread of HIV/AIDs.
“We are grateful that our partners have made this tournament a reality. This will foster the already existing unity among the nine counties of Tooro while we continue to sensitize the King’s subjects about HIV/AIDS,” Tungakwo said.
Tungakwo was in the company of Bunyangabu county chairperson Peace Mutuuzo who doubles as minister for gender and culture in the Kingdom.
In the opening match, Bunyangabu beat Kibale 2-1 thanks to goals from Patrick Musinguzi and Norman Namanya while Ivan Ahereza scored the consolation goal for Kibale.
In the second match of the same group (A), Ivan Ahera’s lone strike was enough for Kibale to edge Kitagwenda.
In the other Group A match, Bunyangabu were three-nile winners over Kitagwenda. Ronald Alituha scored twice while Allan Muganzi scored the other.
Action continues this weekend with Group B taking center stage on Friday, 25th March 2022 at Katoosa Playground. Mwenge South is set to host Kyaka and Mwenge North.
On Sunday, 27th March, Group C matches will be played at King Oyo Sports Complex, Knights Arena Bukwali where Fort Portal City will host Burahya and Ntoroko.
Prizes
The winning team will walk away with Shs 5 million and a trophy while the first runner up will pocket Shs 3 million. The third-placed team will get Shs 1.5 million while the fourth team will be given Shs 500,000.
MTN Uganda’s commitment to developing sport across the country was re-echoed in their new commitment to boost Tooro Kingdom Masaza football tournaments and the newly introduced inter-counties bicycle competitions.
The telecom giants entered a partnership worth Seven Hundred Million Uganda Shillings, with the kingdom of Tooro to support the Kingdom’s socio-cultural and economic programs.
It will be executed under MTN Y’ello Hope, as Corporate Social Investment projects. MTN has also committed to supporting the annual Empango or coronation celebrations over the period of the partnership.
Representing the Chief Executive Officer, the MTN Uganda General Manager, Sales, and Distribution, Mr. Joseph Bogera presided over the symbolic signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, that took place at the Karuzika in Fort Portal, during the Omukama’s silver jubilee Empango celebrations.
Mr. Bogera said that MTN is working with cultural institutions like the kingdom of Tooro, because they are a strong community establishment that fosters shared beliefs and unity of purpose.
“As MTN, we believe that we are good together because MTN only succeeds if the communities in which we operate succeed.
“Being a partner in development gives us the opportunity to support the social and economic aspirations of our customers and the Ugandan community in general.
“We are focused on actively demonstrating what can be achieved if we work together to enable a shared value system,” Bogera said, adding that MTN is proud to be associated with the Kingdom of Tooro and what it stands for in the lives of its people.
Rt. Hon Bernard Tungakwo the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom thanked MTN Uganda for caring and supporting the people of Tooro over the years.
“I am happy to note that MTN has over the years shown its care for the people of Tooro. Our association stretches years back, and this partnership is further testament to the bond that exists between the people of Tooro and MTN.
“We are indeed grateful for all the support you have extended to the kingdom and pledge to continue supporting MTN in whatever way we can,” Tungakwo said.
As part of MTN’s 20-year anniversary celebrations, the company supported the renovation and equipping of the maternity wards at Kijuura Health Centre III and Kabarole Hospital in Tooro Kingdom.
