Uganda Crested Cranes edged Ethiopia 2-0 in the first leg of the first round of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) Qualifiers at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

Riticia Nabbosa and Fauziah Najjemba were on target for the Crested Cranes who take a two-goal advantage into the return leg next week.

Nabbosa showed composure when she was played through by Sumaya Komuntale to slot in the opener in the second minute of the game.

Najjemba doubled the advantage late in the second half when she raced on a long ball over the top from Sheebah Zalwanga and headed over goalkeeper Tarikua Bargena Balcha.

Crested Cranes goalkeeper Ruth Aturo made three outstanding saves in the first half. She denied Senaf Wakuma Demise, Medina Awol Busser and fingertipped Birra Etsegenet long range effort for corner.

The return leg will be played on 26th October with the winner set to take on either Kenya or South Sudan for a place in next year’s AWCON in Morocco.
