Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Ali Chebures and Police’s Mercyline Chelangat won the 2022 male and female respective 21 KM Source of the Nile Marathon in Jinja on Sunday, 27th February.

Chebures clocked 1:02:00 to add to the recently won National Cross Country title in Tororo.
Police’s Abel Chebet (1:02:04) and another UWA runner Geofrey Kusuro (1:02:06) were second and third respectively.

I am happy that God has given me yet this chance again to add this race and am humbled to be the winner. Now my focus turns to Commonwealth Games qualification since my target is to win a gold medal for Uganda in Birmingham come July.

Like Chebures, Chelangat had also registered success in the National Cross Country Championship.

She clocked 1:11:52 to win the competitive race ahead of UWA’s Sarah Chelengat (1:12:12).
Another UWA runner Dorren Chesang was third with an improved 1:12:59.

In 2021, Chesang had won the female race with a time of 1:13:05.

I am determined and focused and that has kept me moving. My performance in the 2020 Olympic games was not good but I’m back and certainly I will compete to win a medal in 2022 Commonwealth games which is not a dream just because I have done it before.

The half marathon drew a mammoth attendance with 155 runners (123 male) and 32 females.
Current world record holder Jacob Kiplimo alongside the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth gold medalist Moses Kipsiro keenly followed the runners on a Boda Boda as they cheered on.

“Uganda has got abundant talent and I have witnessed it as I followed the runners from start to finish. I am optimistic Uganda will do well in Oregon and Birmingham,” Kiplimo.

Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) next event on the 2022 calendar is the first Track and Field event on 5th March at Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
