Melissa Akullu guided Vanguard Lions to victory over The Masters in a gridlocked game played at OCC Gym on Saturday night. The Ugandan centre scored a game-high 12 points to go with 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocks as the number 12 ranked Lions beat the Mustangs 41-32 in a low-scoring game. It was the lowest number of total points for the season in a countable game for either side, but Akullu’s Vanguard showed determination in the second half and emerged victorious. The Lions outscored the Mustangs 24-10 over the final two quarters to win the game, taking them to 20-4 overall and 13-3 in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC). The Masters drops to 16-8 overall and 9-7 in GSAC action. Akullu to bounced back after struggling during the 53-50 win against Westmont on Thursday. Vanguard who have won nine straight games will conclude the season with two away games, with San Diego Christian up first on Thursday, February 16.
