New York Half Marathon - Sun, March 19, 2023 2:00 PM Olympic and world champion on the track, with world 5000m and 10,000m records Joshua Cheptegei feels excited to take part in the New York City Half Marathon due Sunday. Cheptegei owns the Tokyo Olympic gold medal from the 5000m event at 12:58.15 and three world records in the 5000m, 10,000m and the road 15K best. Talking up the Marathon, Cheptegei wants to defend his World Championships crown hence the strong desire to participate. "I’m very excited for my first race in New York City," said Cheptegei, who will be contesting the second half marathon of his career after his 59:21 run in Gdynia. "One of the primary goals for 2023 is to defend my 10,000m gold medal from the World Championships, and this half marathon is an important part of those preparations." Cheptegei is the current record holder of the 10,000 metres which he set on 7 October 2020, improving on Kenenisa Bekele's 15-year-old record by more than 6 seconds.
