- Police FC 2-1 Young Elephant
Police FC registered a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Young Elephants FC in the FUFA Big League at Kavumba Recreation Grounds on Monday.
In the 21st minute of the game, Jimmy Oola broke the deadlock, heading in from close range to give the visitors a lead.
Daniel Jakony made a stunning clearance as he got the ball off the line to save the Cops from conceding the second.
Emmanuel Mugume had a chance to level matters before the break but his first touch in the box was heavy thus giving away possession.
Police kept pushing for an equaliser but Isaac Agogo’s troops were well-organised at the back. The first 45 minutes ended as the visitors sat in the driving seat.
At the start of the second half, Simon Peter Mugerwa made a double change as he rallied his charges to get back into the game.
Midfielder Gadafi Kacancu and forward Steven Kabuye were called off the field and were replaced by Tonny Kiwalazi and Denis Kalanzi.
Isaac Ogwang missed a spectacular close-range shot eight minutes into the second stanza. Mugume’s free-kick was blocked back into play before George Kiryowa set up Ogwang but the forward hardly utilised the cut-clear change.
Second-half substitute Kalanzi found the back of the net to restore parity and give Police a chance to get back into the game.
With 13 minutes to end the game, Brian James Obedi was introduced in place of Isaac Ogwang.
At the death, Police goalkeeper Davis Mutebi set up Obedi who nodded the ball home to snatch the victory late.
The victory gives Police a perfect start to the 2023/24 Big League campaign after narrowly missing out on promotion last season.
Next, Police FC will be on the road to visit Jinja North on Saturday, September 30 while Young Elephant will host Calvary on Sunday, October 1.
