The NRC reigning champion Duncan Mubiru is very happy with the performance of his newly acquired car; a Ford Fiesta Proto.

The car arrived on Friday night; hours before Saturday’s opening leg of the Kaliro Sugar EMC Rally in Iganga.

‘Kikankane’ gave the Ford its first spin posting best fifth and fourth-best stage times in the opening loop.

He however rolled the Ford on the first run of the Super Special Stage. He retired for day one.

“This rally was going to help me adapt to the car very well. I believe there is no better way to learn a car than being in a real competition.

“In the first stages, we were just feeling the car and all went well. But during the super special, the car broke something on the rear stabilizer and it was not stable causing the roll,” explained Mubiru.

Mubiru carried on to secure a comfortable fifth position overall despite the mishap. He was 5 minutes and 45 seconds behind rally leader Ponsiano Lwakataka.

“I had to continue with the event to learn the car a bit more. So far, I am very happy with it. Everything about it is different from what I have had before.”

Mubiru and Nsubuga registered 40 points to kick start their NRC title defense.

“We are still maintaining our earlier season targets to win the title again. At the moment we still have 500 points to fight for,” he added.
