Uganda Cranes midfielder Steven Sserwadda debuted for his new side New York Red Bulls after a short loan move from New York Red Bulls II a couple of days ago.

Sserwadda came in for Lucas Lima in the 84th minute to rousing welcome, a game NYRB won 3-0 over New York City FC to advance to the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

It was the team’s first trip to the last four of the oldest cup competition in United States soccer since 2017 and Sserwadda impressed.

Lewis Morgan and Luquinhas scored for the second consecutive game, while Omir Fernandez found the back of the net for the second time in the last three meetings with NYCFC.

It’s the third consecutive win in the New York Derby for the Red Bulls. They’re unbeaten against NYCFC dating back to 2020.

After the match, Sserwadda was accorded a chance to say a word to his teammates after the successful evening;

"First of all I would like to thank everyone, the team for this chance, it has been a hard game but together we made it easy, and thanks for everything," he said.

Sserwadda, 19, is in his second year with NYRB II and has made 14 USL Championship appearances. He has made 10 appearances this season and has totaled 862 minute.

The Kampala, Uganda native has featured for all levels of Uganda national teams, where he has made three appearances and totaled 120 minutes played for the Uganda senior side.

He made his senior national team debut on on March 25 against Tajikistan.

The Red Bulls will play the winner of next Wednesday’s Orlando City-Nashville matchup in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals on July 26 or 27.
