World record holder for both the 5000m and 10000m Joshua Cheptegei is set to compete in the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon.
The race which is a World Athletics Gold Label event will take place on Sunday, October 20.
The 10,000m Olympic gold medalist and a three-time World champion made his international debut in India at the TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2014, finishing second.
Cheptegei’s return to India for the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon promises to be a highlight of this year’s race and will be his first Half Marathon in Delhi.
“This country holds a special place in my heart, as it’s where I made my international debut in 2014,” Cheptegei said as quoted by Watch Athletics. “It’s been a good season for me, and I am certainly looking at a course-record timing at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon. The energy and passion of the Indian running community are truly inspiring, and I’m excited to be part of this prestigious event.”
The course for the race runs through the heart of Delhi. It passes many other sights of the city, including the India Gate and the Kartavya Path.
The International Elite winners in the men’s and women’s categories will take home US $27,000 each and the prize money includes the top 10 finishers in both. In addition to this, there is an Event Record Bonus of US $12,000.
Cheptegei competed in the half marathon last year in New York where he finished second.
With Uganda’s star athlete now fully switching to road races, he will also set his focus on qualifying for the marathon at next year’s Tokyo World Athletics Championships.
Team Uganda heads to Rwanda to compete at the fifth edition of the Africa Region IV Golf Championship at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas high in confidence.
The tournament is scheduled for 2nd to 6th October 2024.
Besides the hosts Rwanda and Uganda, the other countries expected to take part include Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion, Seychelles, South Sudan and Tanzania.
On Monday, 30th September 2024, the Uganda Golf Union officially flagged off its team of four golfers.
Captain Joseph Cwinya-ai (Tooro Club), Joseph Kasozi (Uganda Golf Club), Joseph Reagan Akena (Lugazi Hills and Country Club) and Ibrahim Ssemakula (Lugazi Hills and Country Club) are the players on the team.
“We have trained well and have the confidence that we shall do well in Rwanda. The team has experienced and talented players ready for the job with winning in the DNA,” said Cwinya-ai.
The team will be coached by pro golfer Flavia Namakula who is optimistic about good performances at the tournament.
“The players have been physically and mentally trained ready for the job at hand. Of late, we have been polishing the end game at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course, the same course as the one in Kigali,” Namakula noted.
3rd Place Playoff | Match Summary
Uganda’s Baby Victoria Pearls finished fourth at the U19 Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers after losing the 3rd Place Playoff to hosts Rwanda by 3 wickets.
The Baby Victoria Pearls failed to put the semifinal loss to Zimbabwe behind them quickly enough to come up with a great performance to secure third place.
Patricia Timong (19) and Lorna Anyait (13) were the only players to get in double digits as Uganda was completely out of their element with the bat finishing on 71 all out.
In the run chase, Rwanda who Uganda had beaten in the group phase was solid in their response which made it difficult to defend the small total.
Mitchelle Ariago (2/7) was impressive in her first game of the tournament but that was not enough to get Uganda over the line as they finished in the same position as Botswana two years ago.
However, the experience is invaluable for the youngsters as they continue to develop on the international stage.
Men’s UGT20 Final
Wanderers claimed their first T20 title in eleven years after edging Rounders in a low-scoring thriller at the Lugogo Cricket Oval in the final on Sunday.
Wanderers won the toss and elected to bat first but the decision was not backed by the batter on a slow wicket. Rwandan international Didier Ndikwibimana (27) was the top scorer of the team with Abu Seguya (19) the other major contributor to the team’s total of 99 in 17.2 overs.
David Mwesigwa (3/19), Narinder Singh (3/23) and Richard Sohera (2/6) combined to pick up eight wickets to keep their side in the contest against a relatively stronger lineup of Wanderers.
In the run chase, Rounders failed to build meaningful partnerships but the total was within reach even with just one wicket remaining before a moment of madness led to the loss of the final wicket.
Martin Akayezu (5/22) was the stand-out bowler for Wanderers and Arthur Magwa (3/19) provided support in what seemed like a masterclass performance from skipper Davis Karashani in the field setting.
It was a good season for Wanderers who finished second in the men’s 50-over League and victory in the T20 League crowns a nearly perfect season.
Avengers have proved too strong for Black Pearls and have all but sealed the National Sevens title with a circuit still to play.
The Entebbe-based side recorded a 20-7 win over the Peals thanks to tries from Sarah Kirabo, Florence Babirye, Christine Akello, and Juliet Nandawula.
Emilly Lekuru touched down for the Bweyogerere-based side who have been second-best against to Avengers throughout the season save for the opening weekend.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s category, KOBs won their first circuit of the season.
In just their first appearance in the final, KOBs beat Buffaloes 15-5 at the Ntare School Rugby Pitch in Kakyeka.
Derrick Tukwasiibwe, commonly known as Mukiga, scored a brace in the first half to put KOBs in the driving seat before Ivan Odhiambo halved the deficit for Buffaloes.
While Buffaloes saw much of the ball in the second half, it was Pius Ogena who put the match to bed for KOBs hence sealing their first Cup win of the season.
The 2024 National 7s Series will officially conclude next weekend with the Henry Rujumba Memorial 7s hosted by Black Pirates at Kings Park in Bweyogerere.
Burahya clinched their first-ever Tooro Kingdom MTN Amasaza Cup on Saturday evening after edging Fort Portal City 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout at Buhinga Stadium.
The regulation time of the finale ended in a 1-1 draw and spot kicks had to decide the champion.
A packed crowd that included His Majesty Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of Tooro Kingdom, witnessed Burahya win the third edition.
Burahya struck early with Adrien Kambale finding the back of the net in the 10th minute, sending their fans into celebration.
Fort Portal City fought back and their breakthrough came after the interval in the 47th minute when George Kato’s equalizer swung the momentum in their favour. However, neither side could find a winner before the final whistle, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
Burahya held their nerve as Fort Portal City faltered, with two missed penalties sealing their fate. The 4-3 victory in the shootout earned Burahya not just the trophy but also Shs 7.5 million in prize money courtesy of MTN Uganda. Fort Portal City, despite the heartbreak, received Shs 5 million as runners-up.
Burahya’s chairman, Alex Kwizira, expressed his gratitude to both MTN Uganda and the Tooro Kingdom for their continued support of the tournament.
“The Tooro Kingdom MTN Amasaza Cup brings communities together, celebrates culture, and empowers the youth through sports,” Kwizira said, emphasizing the tournament’s role in addressing social issues such as HIV/AIDS awareness.
This year’s tournament was played under the theme “Fight Against HIV/AIDS in the Kingdom” aiming to leverage the power of sports to raise awareness on critical societal challenges.
Michael Wandera, Tooro Kingdom’s Minister of Sports, noted that MTN Uganda’s partnership underscores the importance of educating young people about the dangers of HIV/AIDS.
The day also featured bicycle racing competitions, with winners from two categories each receiving Shs 1 million in prize money, further adding to the celebratory atmosphere at Buhinga Stadium.
With Burahya winning this year’s tournament, it means all three editions have been won by a different county. Mwenge South and Kyaka are the past winners.

September MTN Monthly Tee Top Performers
As the National Rugby Sevens Series takes another two-week break before returning with Mbarara 7s scheduled for 28-29 September, Avengers and Heathens are odds on to win titles.
The two sides won the Kyabazinga 7s played over the weekend at the Kyabazinga Stadium in Bugembe to go top of the women’s and men’s standings.
Heathens registered a 12-7 win over Walukuba in a sudden-death final, marking their second consecutive victory in the National Rugby 7s series following success in Gulu.
Reuben Kagwiasagy scored for Walukuba with Gift Wokorach converting for a 7-0 lead at halftime.
However, Nobert Okeny scored at the stroke of regulation time with Aaron Ofworwoth converting to send the game into extra time. Okeny went on to score the circuit-winning try.
In the women’s final, the Avengers proved dominant with a one-sided 35-00 victory over the Thunderbirds.
Maimuna Nasozi led Avengers’ attack, scoring two tries while skipper Peace Lekuru and Christine Akello also crossed the white chalk.
It was the third circuit claimed by Avengers this season having won in Gulu and Kyadondo.
Uganda Cranes have beaten Congo 2-0 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.
Aziz Kayondo and Jude Ssemugabi scored for the Cranes who picked their first win of the campaign that took their points tally to 4 in two games, and top of the group.
Uganda started the match on the front foot seeking for an opener in front of a loud crowd.
In the third minute, the Cranes got their first chance at goal. Denis Omedi cut in from the left but his shot from just outside the box went over the bar.
Muhammad Shaban played Rogers Mato through but the latter was a second late for the pass.
Kayondo made a quick throw in to Mato who played Shaban through but the center forward was a bit slow with Congo clearing their lines.
At the quarter hour mark, Cranes had another chance. Ssekiganda played a long ball to find Mato who dribbled his way into the box but his ground cross was cleared.
In the 20th minute, Cranes took the lead through Aziz Kayondo who beat goalie with a cross-cum-shot. The left back recieved the ball in space from Mato driving through about 20 yards before shooting at goal for the opener.
Mato could have doubled the lead five minutes later but he could not find the target after cutting in to shoot.
The Cranes suffered a setback as Shaban paved way for Jude Ssemugabi before halftime with an injury.
In the second half, Uganda took the foot off the pedal with Congo taking control of some moments in search of an equalizer.
However, the introduction Allan Okello for Travis Mutyaba restored some urgency in the Cranes attack. The Vipers forward set up Ssemugabi to seal the points for the home side with four minutes to full time.
Uganda returns to action on 7th October when they host South Sudan at Namboole.
