The 2022 MTN Kampala Marathon gets underway on Sunday 2oth, November at Kololo Independence grounds, and today, MTN has revealed some of the elite runners going to participate.

In an event today, Ugandan Kiplimo Phillip who made his half marathon debut in the 2012 marathon and ran the distance in under one hour and two minutes was part of those revealed.

The 31-year-old is a seasoned long-distance runner who finished fourth on his marathon debut at the 2014 Linz Marathon, running a time of 2:14:14 hours.

As the previous winner of the 2019 edition in the 42Km category, Kiplimo will be battling for honors alongside fellow compatriot Joshua Chemutai Bekele who has also garnered experience over the 5000m distance.

Kenyan marathoner Munyeki Charles Kiama has also been listed and he enters the fray with loads of experience. He is re-known for his spectacular show at the 2009 Chicago Marathon where he crossed the tape fourth in  2:07:06.

Kiama is also revered after making podium place at the 2016 Warszawa Marathon in Poland. He ran 2:12:55 to complete the full marathon is style.

The coveted MTN Marathon is back!

This year’s edition will take place on Sunday, November 20, and run under the theme “Run for Babies”. Today we focus on the race categories that will be available for participants at the Kololo Independence Grounds.

The Wheelchair race will be held on Sunday 13th November 2022. This will be exactly a week before the rest of the categories will be competed for on Sunday 20th November. Wheelchair racing is for anyone who has a qualifying disability.

In the 2019 edition, Kevin Mubiru won the men’s wheelchair race category while Polline Acayo claimed the female’s category.

The world record of Marathon is currently held by Kenyan long distance runner Eliud Kipchoge who ran 2:01:09 this year.

In the 2019 edition, Phillip Kiplimo covered the 42km race in 2 hours, thirteen minutes and 56 seconds while Nyakisi Adero won the women’s category in 2 hours, 41 minutes and 11 seconds.

The world record of the 21Km is currently held by Ugandan long distance runner Jacob Kiplimo who posted 57:31 on 21 November 2021 in Lisbon to break Kibiwott Kandie’s record of 57:32.

In the 2019 edition, still, Jacob Kiplimo won shs4.5 million having covered the distance in 1 hour 1 minute and 53 seconds.

As one of the shortest common road distances, many 10K races attract high levels of public participation. This year’s category will also attract quite a number. In the previous 2019 edition, Ugandan Denis Cherotich won the race in 35 minutes and 29 minutes.

Female counterpart, Sauline Chelangat, won the women’s category over the same distance in 35 minutes and 29 seconds.

Lastly, the shortest and easiest race will also have a fun element to it. The official world records in the 5000 metres are held by Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei with 12:35.36 for men and Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey with 14:06.62 for women.

This year’s edition has already confirmed the presence of Cindy Sanyu – a music artist who will perform for the runners alongside others.

What is the MTN Kampala Marathon?

The MTN Kampala Marathon, now in its 17th edition, is an annual athletics road event that has been a mainstay on the Ugandan sports calendar since its inception in 2004 giving participants “a good reason to run” because apart from running for health and fitness, they get to contribute towards a community-benefiting project.

The proceeds from this year’s marathon will go towards kitting maternal and newborn facilities in four Health Centers across the country. The beneficiary health facilities include Kisenyi and Kawaala Health Facilities in the suburbs of Kampala as well as Kachumbala (Teso sub-region) and Kabong (Karamoja sub-region).

The 17th edition of the MTN Kampala Marathon will take place on Sunday, 20th November 2022 starting at Kololo Independence Grounds.

Uganda’s top female athletes Peruth Chemutai, Stella Chesang have confirmed participation in the 2022 National Cross Country Championships due December 10th.

Sarah Chelangat, Mercyline Chelangat, and Zena Chebet are the other stars who will grace the event at Tororo Golf Course.

Chemutai and Mercyline Chelangat have been training in Kapchorwa while Chesang and Sarah Chelangat are training in Iten in Eldoret, Kenya.

Chemutai will be debuting in the event as part of her preparation for the World Cross Country Championships.

“I am an Olympian and I also want to be a world cross-country champion,” Chemuutai Told URN in Kapchorwa.

Uganda is preparing a team that will represent in the World Cross Country Championships slated for Feb 2023, in Australia.

Uganda’s legendary long distance runner Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei has been appointed as the ambassador of Eastern regional football club, Admin FC.

The development was confirmed during a fundraising dinner held at Cafe Shires along Malaba road in Tororo.

The reigning Olympic champion in the 5000 metres and silver medalist for the 10,000 metres confirmed to work in the appointed role.

Ugandan long-distance runner Solomon Mutai is relieved after putting up a performance like no other to win the Venice Marathon in Italy on Sunday.

The 30-year-old marathoner posted a time of two hours, eight minutes, and 10 seconds at the World Athletics Bronze Label Road Race to emerge the victor.

He broke away from Kenyan Emmanuel Naibei and Ethiopian Abebe Tefese to power home despite initially remaining quiet in the lead group through the first 21km.

The bronze medallist at the 2015 Beijing World Championships in China felt the course was tough as he narrated.

“It was a good race, but the course was a bit challenging because of the 14 bridges. I started my running career because other runners inspired me in my country,” Mutai said.

Even though Mutai took the wrong way at a crossroad, he returned to the right course and managed to win. He improved the course record to 2:08:10, from 2:08:13 previously held by John Komen since 2009.

Ugandan long-distance runner Joshua Cheptegei is recovering well ahead of the National Cross Country Championships due 10th December at Tororo Golf Course.

His nemesis Jacob Kiplimo will also feature in the events and both runners are currently preparing with all resources they can get their hands.

Cheptegei missed the Great North Run in England on September 12th, due to an injury, but according to reports by The Independent, the star is bound to return to the fray.

“I feel proud representing Uganda at International Championships, that’s why I have started the training for the event,” Cheptegei told Uganda Radio Network in Kapchorwa.

Cheptegei was recently also ruled out of the 2022 Commonwealth games due to injury and body rest requirements as well.

Even after winning the Gold in the 2022 Oregon World Athletics Championships in the 10,000m men’s race, he couldn’t connect to Birmingham from the USA.

The National Cross Country Championships will be used to select the national team that will represent the country at the World Cross Country championships in Australia in February 2023.

Cheptegei is revered in the athletics category having won the men’s race at the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark.

President Yoweri Museveni has rewarded athletes who brought glory back home from several recent international events they took part in.

The stars smiled to about Shs300m in prize money for their stand-out performances via a luncheon at State House Entebbe on Thursday.

The head of state was particularly pleased with the silverware from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in England.

“I congratulate those who won medals,” Museveni is quoted by Daily Monitor. Uganda also won three medals from 17 athletes at the Oregon World Athletics Championships in the USA and nine medals from 42 competitors at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey.

Victor Kiplangat who won Uganda’s first silverware in Birmingham by clinching the men’s 42km marathon gold received a brand new Renault Koleos.

Kiplangat also collected Shs50m for the victory while his brother Jacob Kiplimo received Shs100m for his 5000m and 10000m double victory in Birmingham.

She Cranes took Shs20m after taking fifth place – their best finish ever – in Commonwealth Games history.

Rugby Cranes who won the Africa 7s in Kampala and later were crowned the Bowl trophy winners at the Sevens Rugby World Cup in South Africa got Shs20m just like Cricket Cranes who claimed the Africa T20 Cup in South Africa.

Uganda’s long-distance runner Jacob Kiplimo has pulled out of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon scheduled for this weekend.

Kiplimo was dubbed the biggest attraction of the race that is only returning after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 21-year-old 10,000m Olympic and World bronze medallist revealed his withdrawal from the event on social media platforms on Tuesday.

“Friends of New Delhi and India I’m sorry I will not be in your country for the Vedanta Delhi half marathon. I wish all the runners best of luck and to the race organizers and sponsors to keep that race one of the best in the world (sync). I promise that one day I will be there,” Kiplimo said on his social media.

According to Sportskeeda, Kiplimo’s team management is “yet to confirm whether he will compete or not.”

Kiplimo also won 5,000m and 10,000m gold at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The race will be flagged off from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on October 16.

After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, the MTN Marathon is back!

The 17th edition of the annual event was launched on Monday, 10th October at the MTN Uganda HQ in Industrial Area.

East Africa’s most anticipated athletics event will take place on Sunday, 20th November 2022.

“It is with such great joy that we resume the most anticipated sports activity in the East African region, after a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is bigger and better, in its purpose of doing good in the communities,” Sylvia Mulinge, the MTN Uganda CEO, said at the launch.

Mulinge added that this year’s marathon targets maternal health as proceeds will go towards upgrading maternal and newborn services at different health centers across the country.

“This year’s marathon proceeds shall be used by the MTN Foundation to equip and further improve maternal and neonatal health facilities to save the lives of mothers and babies. Proceeds from this year’s marathon shall be used to upgrade maternal and newborn services in four selected health facilities across the country,” she said.

The beneficiary health facilities include Kisenyi and Kawaala health facilities in the suburbs of Kampala plus those in Kachumbala (Teso sub-region) and Kabong (Karamoja sub-region).
