Cricket Cranes suffered a heavy setback in their quest for qualification by losing to neighbors Kenya by 36 runs in their third game in Jersey.

That loss meant they were stuck in third place, two points behind leaders Jersey and a point behind Hong Kong.

Hong Kong failed to dispatch Italy therefore if the Cricket Cranes defeat Bermuda they will move into second place.

In preparation for the all-important clash against Hong Kong, coach Lawrence Mahatlane will be hoping that his boys put it together.

Uganda has a chance especially if Kenya and Italy help them in their games against Jersey who are the leaders.

If Kenya defeats Jersey in the final game, Uganda will have to upstage Hong Kong in their final game on Sunday.

Olila High won by 10 wickets

Olila High School has emerged as the winner of the 2022 Grils Schools Cricket Week after defeating Jinja SS in the final.

12 schools came together for the 2022 edition, Kilembe and Nyakasura represented the West, Light SSS, and Olila High School represented the North East region.

Victoria High, Jinja SSS, and Lord’s Meade turned up from the East with the central region having Ndejje SSS, St John’s SS Mukono and Agape Christian School, and Masaka SSS the sole representative of the south.

The games were played in Budo, Ndejje, and Gayaza over a period of five days, and defending champions Olila went through the tournament unbeaten.

Light SSS met Jinja SSS in the semifinals with the latter making it to the final in a very close game while Olila High School easily overcame Ndejje SSS.

In the final Olila High School picked up a 10-wicket win over Jinja SSS.

Jimia Mohammed scooped the best batters award, Kevin Amuge was the best bowler, Restine Kabugho (Nyakasura) won the best fielder award.

Sandra Achawo (Light SSS) was awarded best wicket-keeper award and Janet Nakiranda (Jinja SSS) took the MVP award.

Kenya destroyed Uganda’s qualification chances after a 36-run loss in the ICC Cricket Challenge League B tournament round three in Jersey.

Uganda won the toss and elected to bowl and all seemed to have gone rosy until the opportunity to bat came.

Youngster Juma Miyagi who came into the team in the place of Bilal Hassun was brilliant upfront with his lively pace, picked the first wicket, and also kept the batters quiet.

Frank Nsubuga sent down 10 overs for a meager 11 runs with Riazat Ali Shah picking up 4 wickets for 38 runs.

Miyagi (3/36) completed a fine bowling display with Kenya finishing on 172/9 in their 50 overs.

In the chase, Uganda struggled – Simon Ssesazi and Arnold Otwani falling cheaply.

Emmanuel Bundi who finished with career-best figures of 6/36 tore through the rest of the batting line with Rakeep Patel holding onto four catches in slips.

Irfan Karim shined on both fronts holding onto three catches as a keeper.

A 7th wicket partnership worth 69 runs between Riazat Ali Shah (49) and Frank Nsubuga (16) tried to resurrect the chase but once the former lost his wicket, the win came quickly for Kenya.

Uganda’s opportunity of moving to the next round of the qualifiers is now in tatters, especially after the home side Jersey defeated Hong Kong comprehensively.

Uganda remains in 3rd place two points behind leaders Jersey and a point behind Hong Kong.

For the Cricket Cranes to progress, they will have to pray both Hong Kong and Jersey lose while they win their remaining two games.

Cricket Cranes head coach Lawrence Mahatlane has urged his charges to keep doing the simple things right as they seek victory over neighbours Kenya in the ICC Challenge League B tournament in Jersey.

Uganda started with a loss to Jersey but restored their path to progression with victory over Italy in the subsequent encounter.

Speaking to media, Mahatlane said the team’s need to continue doing the right things but also worry about the controllable.

“Again another big game tomorrow. As I have always said as long as we are in control of our destiny, it is the most important thing,” he said.

“With 2 points, it is important for us to keep doing the right things and we’ve played some very good cricket whether it is the batting or bowling department and fielding.”

Hong Kong currently leads with 19 points after 12 matches, Jersey is second with 18 points while Uganda follows with the same points.

The difference between Jersey and Uganda is the net run rate. Jersey has 1.719, Uganda is at 0.715 while Hong Kong has 1.135.

Quizzed on the Hong Kong and Jersey clash, Mahatlane said; “Again it’s about us controlling our destiny. Hong Kong are one point ahead of ourselves and Jersey.

“And there is a difference in the net run rate but we can control what we can, so it should just be a good close game that doesn’t affect our net run rate too much.”

Uganda is meeting Kenya after winning three of the last five matches the teams have faced each other. The last Uganda faced Kenya in Kampala, the former won by 7 wickets with 29 balls remaining.

Kenya last defeated Uganda in the version in 2015 at the ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament in Windhoek, Namibia.

Cricket Cranes face Kenya in need of a place in the next round of the 2023 One Day World Cup qualifiers.

Kenya got over Italy before Uganda further made light work of the same opponent with a seven-wicket win.

Frank Nsubuga was the stand-out with bowling figures of 3/8 in 9 overs however, coach Laurence Mahatlane is likely to ring some changes to the playing XI.

Juma Miyagi, Cosmas Kyewuta, and Frank Akankwasa are yet to have a runout and they could be used especially if Uganda opts to go with an all-out pace attack.

Nsubuga lives for this fixture and only Deus Muhumuza could be the other sure name of the starting XI.

Ronak Patel scored an unbeaten 56 in the game against Italy while Arnold Otwani continued his good form with a well-constructed 21.

Uganda is in third place on the table, a point behind leaders in Hong Kong. A win against Kenya will move Uganda into the top spot.

Uganda won by six wickets during the Kampala leg and has a slight mental edge. Rakep Patel will be instrumental for Kenya.

The Uganda Cricket Cranes team will travel to Jersey for the 2022 ICC World Cup Challenge League B tournament via ferry following their flight from Entebbe through Doha to London.

The team will take four hours on the trip before docking in Jersey where they will reside for the next couple of days.

According to a statement released on the Federation’s Twitter page, the team needed to get to Jersey in time, and flights to the region were scarce, a reason for the ferry option.

“Ebb-Doha-London-Jersey Our bus driver Jabu from Heathrow to Poole Port was a firecracker throughout the two-hour trip. The Cricket Cranes will take a 4-hour ferry to Jersey which is their camp for the next 14 days. #CricketCranesInColour,” read the first part of the post.

“Yes flight options not available and we needed to be in Jersey ASAP,” the account further replied to a query about why the team didn’t fly to Jersey.

The outfit will be led by Deus Muhumuza as captain Brian Masaba remained home, ruled out due to injury. Uganda seeks qualification to the next stage which will also mean acquiring One Day International (ODI) status.

Uganda Cricket Cranes will use the leadership of Deus Muhumuza as they navigate the final round of the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B in Jersey.

Muhumuza will be assisted by Kenneth Waiswa who took the reigns of the team in the T20 version when they featured at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

In the team named to travel to Jersey, Roger Mukasa has been replaced by Arnold Otwani while captain Brian Masaba misses out due to injury.

Bilal Hassun also makes the team after joining the contingent for the Zimbabwe feat where Uganda finished fifth, defeating Jersey.

Victoria Pearls stars Proscovia Alako and Phiona Kulume have been selected to start training with the provisional Uganda U-19 girl’s squad that is preparing for the U-19 Cricket World Cup qualifiers due September.

Uganda Cricket Association released the list of 27 players who will be fine-tuned ahead of their tour to Botswana to face hosts Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.

They will all tussle for a place at the World Cup will take place in South Africa from January 2023. The qualification process already started on 3 June and teams to feature at the showpiece are already shaping up.

Alako and Kulume are considered the star players who will spur the team to glory never witnessed before. The duo come on board with experience from the Victoria Pearls team, Kulume having won player of the match when she picked six wickets against Namibia.

The provisional squad also includes fast-rising gems in Jimia Muhammad who debuted with the Victoria Pearls in Namibia this year, Ariokot Malisa, Patricia Timong, Anyait Lonah and Acan Racheal.

Cricket Cranes started the final leg of the T20 World Cup qualifiers with a two-wicket win over Hong Kong on Monday at the Bulawayo Athletic Club.

Hong Kong won the toss and chose to bat but a player of the game Dinesh Nakrani (4-12) and Cosmas Kyebuta (2-21) led the Cricket Cranes’ attack as they limited theirn opponents to 87/9.

In the chase, Simon Ssesazi fell with the second ball and was shortly followed by his opening partner Roger Mukasa and Kenneth Waiswa.

Ronak Patel (16) and Dinesh Nakrani (11) made significant contributions but it was Riazat Ali Sha’s unbeaten 28 off 41 that secured Uganda the win with 3 balls to spare.

Frank Nsubuga (10) was caught behind on the first ball of the final over to pave way for Cosmas Kyewuta who forced a single to send Shah on the strike.

Riazat went for power on Haroon Arshad’s delivery but his effort was heading directly to Muhammad Aizaz Khan who miss-timed his catch for Rizou to complete the two runs required.

There is no time to rest as Uganda returns to action on Tuesday against Papua New Guinea before taking on the Netherlands on Thursday as they target a place in the semis.

For Uganda to qualify for their first-ever T20 World Cup, they must reach the final of the tournament as the two finalists will qualify for the 2022 global showpiece in Australia.

The Cricket Cranes have been flagged-off by the National Council of Sports for the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe slated for July 9-17.

The squad of 14 will be led by Brian Masaba and they will start their campaign against Hong Kong on Monday before meeting PNG and finishing the group games against the Netherlands in Group B.

The team will be based in Bulawayo with games at Athletic Cricket Club and Queens Club.

The weather condition in Bulawayo is very cold as Zimbabwe goes through its winter season but coach Laurence Mahatlane believes the side is very ready for the conditions.

The conditions are cold and that means the wickets will also be slow so we dont expect big totals. The plan remains the same to ensure that we stick to our basics and take care of our KPIs. We have prepared well physically for the last two years in anticipation of this schedule and we shall do the country proud.

The World Cup is a reality for us and to be the first generation to make the dream a reality is a huge thing. However, we need to do the basics, keeping it simple and ensuring that we can come up big in the big moments.
