Vipers Sports Club are three points away from becoming the 2021-22 Uganda Premier League champions.

The side will be crowned champions if they pick maximum points in their next game, against Express Football Club.

The development follows their two-nil win over Gaddafi at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende coupled with KCCA FC’s one-all draw at BUL.

Livewire striker Ceaser Manzoki scored a double for the four-time league winners who moved to 61 points.

The win meant the Venoms opened a 14-point gap at the summit.

Vipers will host Express FC in their next game while KCCA will be at Buhinga Stadium in Fort Portal to face relegated Tooro United.

At Kavumba, Soltilo Bright Stars edged Wakiso Giants one-nil thanks to an own goal from Joshua Lubwama.

The draws for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers have been conducted.

Uganda has been drawn into Group F alongside neighbours Tanzania, North Africans and 2019 champions Algeria.

It will be the first time since the 2000 qualifiers that Uganda and Algeria will clash.

Tanzania and the Cranes faced off during the qualifiers for the 2019 tournament with the Taifa Stars beating Cranes who had already qualified 3-0 in Dar es Salaam while the game at Namboole ended in a goalless draw.

West Africans Niger complete the group.

Vipers Sports Club goalkeeper Fabien Mutombora has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

According to the club, the head injury he sustained during the game against URA FC on Tuesday last week at the Arena of Visions, Ndejje has put an end to his 2021/22 campaign after scans showed he suffered a zygomatic bone fracture.

Mutombora, unfortunately, will be out until next season. That is a blow for him and a blow for us [because] he has been fantastic,” Robertinho Oliviera told Vipers Media.

The goalkeeper was unavailable for Saturday’s StarTimes Uganda Premier League anticipated thriller at KCCA FC and will be sidelined for the next six league fixtures.

The Burundian will miss league games against Gaddafi FC, Express FC, Onduparaka FC, Wakiso Giants FC, SC Villa, and Police FC as well as the Uganda Cup fixtures.

Mutombora joins Paul Willa and Ibrahim Orit have also been on the sideline, with both unlikely to return until next term.

Vipers Sports Club assistant coach Marcelo Cardoso says the Venoms have not won the StarTimes Uganda Premier League yet.

Cardoso made the comments following Vipers’ 2-1 comeback victory away to KCCA FC at the MTN Omond Stadium on Saturday.

The Venoms trailed to a Denis Iguma early header but bounced back through Ceaser Manzoki and Milton Kalisa who scored in either half.

The win took the Kitende-based side to 58 points, 12 ahead of second-placed KCCA who are on 46 with six games to the end of the season.

Speaking to the press after the game, Cardoso highlighted that it was a hard game but it was good that his side showcased a good performance.

“It was as we expected, a very tough game.

“We know the KCCA team as we studied them a lot and we had our plan and strategy for the match and it worked very well despite the first goal we conceded unexpectedly because we prepared to defend well the first post.

“We knew that they use that position a lot but we went on to score two goals and overcame the opponents but the most important thing for us was to add one more good performance.

“Our target is to win every match but it is not possible as you will lose some along the way but we knew that during this match, we could perform not so well and win.

“We are now showing that we are very strong and we are ready to represent Uganda well in the Champions League next season.”

There are 18 points to play for and Vipers need seven points from the remaining six games to be crowned champions. It would take a dramatic turn of events to stop Vipers from winning the 2021-22 league title but Cardoso insists it is not over.

“The championship isn’t yet over. We are just happy that we are 12 points ahead. We have a good opportunity to win the League & that was still the case even before the match.”

Vipers’ next fixture will be at home to Gaddafi FC at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Wednesday, 20th April.

Vipers Sports Club brightened their chance of winning the StarTimes Uganda Premier League title this season after beating KCCA 2-1 on Saturday.

Goals from Ceasar Manzoki and Milton Karisa in either half ensured the Venoms pick maximum points at the MTN Omondi Stadium.

However, it was the Kasasiro Boys who started brightly as they took the lead inside six minutes thanks to Denis Iguma who nodded home Ashraf Mugume’s freekick.

Morley Byekwaso’s charges looked to be in the driving seat and seemed to have the visitors under check.

However, league top scorer Manzoki levelled matters on 27 minutes. The striker showed excellent timing and precision to head home Yunus Sentamu’s cross past Benjamin Ochan in KCCA ‘s goal.

Both sides had chances to head into the break leading. Sadat Anaku was through on goal before taking a weak shot while under pressure from Disan Galiwango and at the other end, Bobosi Byaruhanga and Hillary Mukundane came close.

The game looked to be balanced at the start of the second half with Manzoki and Anaku having chances at opposite ends.

Vipers took the lead just over the hour-mark. Manzoki flicked Halid Lwaliwa’s freekick into the path of Karisa and the winger headed home to hand the visitors their first lead of the contest which they protected to the final whistle.

The victory sees the Venoms move to 58 points from 24 games and are now 12 points clear of second-placed KCCA who are on 46.

Muhammad Shaban scored the only goal of the game as Onduparaka FC defeated SC Villa 1-0 at the Greenlight Stadium on Friday.

The forward lashed on to a long ball before firing it past the Meddie Kibirige in the 39th minute for his twelfth goal of the season.

Shaban could have doubled the lead midway through the second half but his shot rattled the crossbar. James Jericho and Emmanuel Oketch also came close for the caterpillars.

SC Villa did not create enough in front of goal to trouble the hosts with Saddam Masereka’s cross-cum-shot that was tipped over by Mathais Muwanga the only effort on goal.

The win, which is a fourth straight in the league, eases Onduparaka’s relegation worries as they climb into 8th on the log with 30 points from 24 games.

The defeat drops SC Villa to 12th with 25 points, just one above the drop zone.

Onek scored the opener in the 13th minute of the game before Amos Kirya nearly doubled the lead but missed a close-range header.

In the second half, BUL FC opted to protect their lead and Gaddafi took control of the possession and attacked relentlessly in search of the equalizer.

Police Football Club has parted ways with head coach Abdallah Mubiru following dismal performances in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

The Cops have had a tough campaign and with five games to the end of the season, Police FC are engaged in the relegation battle as they sit in 13th place with 24 points.

In a statement released by the Club CEO, Red. CP Arinaitwe PK, coach Mubiru will no longer be in charge of the club and his assistant John Luyinda takes over in the interim.

“The board of the Police Football Club has taken full analysis of the current performance of the team. At the beginning of the season, the ambition and hopes of the club were to win the Uganda Premier League title. As the season progressed these hopes were dashed

“Currently, the hopes are to stay in the top flight of Uganda’s football. However recent performances appear to indicate that even this hope may not be realized unless drastic steps are taken to address the situation.

“It’s against this background that the board has appointed coach John Luyinda as acting head coach. These changes take immediate effect. Meanwhile, the club will continue to discuss with Mr. Abdallah Mubiru to agree on the way forward for the future of both parties,” reads the statement.

Mubiru replaced Sam Timbe at the club in 2016.
