Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed new nicknames for the various National teams.

The decision to have them for each of the ten National Teams was made at the 26th FUFA Executive Committee convened on Saturday, 26th March 2022.

The Uganda U15 Boys National Team who are reigning Champions in CECAFA region have been named the Rhino Cranes.

They complete the set of men’s National teams that has the Senior Men’s National Team (Uganda Cranes), Uganda U23 (The Kobs), Uganda U20 (The Hippos) and Uganda U17 (The Cubs).

In the Women’s category, the Uganda Senior Women’s National Team maintains its nickname, The Crested Cranes.

The Junior Women’s National Teams who have not had tag names since their creation have now been accorded with the Uganda U20 Women’s National Team referred to as The Queen Cranes.

The Uganda U17 Women’s National Team that recently got eliminated from the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers will now be, The Teen Cranes.

The Men’s National Beach Soccer Team maintains the Sand Cranes nickname while the newly formed Uganda Futsal National Team has been nicknamed the Nile Cranes.

Busoga United drew closer to safety after claiming three points against fellow relegation candidates Tooro United.

The Jinja based outfit huffed and puffed for a hard-fought 1-0 win on Wednesday at Kakindu Stadium to go five points clear of the drop zone.

Striker Anwar Mustafa Ntege netted the lone goal as Busoga United compounded more misery on bottom placed Tooro United.

Ntege found the back of the net in the 57th minute when captain Anthony Mayanja set him him up.

This was the third win for Busoga United at Kakindu Stadium this season since relocating from Kyabazinga Stadium, Bugembe

The success elevated Abbey Bogere Kikomeko’s charges to 11th place on 25 points, five above the relegation zone with their next game coming away to another relegation candidate Soltilo Bright Stars FC.

Tooro United remained stuck at the bottom of the table with 10 points and they will face Wakiso Giants in their next fixture.

The New England Revolution have loaned Ugandan forward Edward Kizza to Memphis 901 FC of the USL Championship.

Kizza – who scored five goals last season – will remain on loan with the fourth-year club through the remainder of the 2022 USL season, the club revealed.

He was selected by New England 24th overall in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, and he went on to make 11 appearances for the Revolution in 2021.

Express Football Club registered its first win under interim manager James Odoch after overcoming Police FC on Tuesday.

The Red Eagles had to come from a goal down to edge the visiting Cops in a closely contested encounter at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

Express FC had gone nine games in all competitions without victory with their last win coming against Tooro United FC away in Fort Portal in January.

The poor run came to a halt on Tuesday with the Red Eagles fighting hard and showing character even when they went down very early in the game.

After a two-year hiatus, the University Football League is back bigger and better.

The 10th edition of the tournament was officially launched on Wednesday with the draws for the group stage conducted during a function held at Kati Kati Restaurant in Lugogo.

22 Universities confirmed their registration this year, an increase of two from 2019 when the tournament was last played.

Makerere University is also back to action after serving a two-year ban because of indiscipline.

Penninah Kabenge, the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) President, is delighted that the League is returning.

“We have been working behind the scene to ensure the league returns soon and I am glad that preparations are now complete and we are here today to launch our 10th season.

“We are excited that this League continues to grow almost every year. I remember we started with just 6 universities but we are now talking of 22, spreading across the country,” she said.

The league is set to kick off on Tuesday, 5th April 2022.

SC Villa head coach Alex Gitta feels his side must win to further compound SC Villa’s relegation worries in the Uganda Premier League.

SC Villa come into the game on the back of a 3-1 defeat at URA and are 12th on the log with 22 points, only two above relegation.

In Wakiso Giants, they take on a wounded lion who lost 2-1 to Onduparaka in their previous outing but Gitta doesn’t care about that.

“Regardless of what is happening there, for us we take the game as one against a giant club not only in Ugandan football but on the continent,” said Gitta.

“The mentality of the lads is that we have a tough game against a very good side and must do everything right if we are to get all three points which is our target especially when we play at home.

“We recognise that we are coming from 1-2 loss to Onduparaka but by the time we played them, we had played close to five games in a space of 15 days which brought in fatigue but we have recovered well.”

The two sides have met three times with the Jogoos winning once, losing and drawing as many.

URA have a chance to trim the gap between them and the leaders Vipers to just five points when they face visitors Arua Hill in the Uganda Premier League.

The duo face off in the day’s early kick off at the Arena of Visions in Ndejje after tax collectors displaced KCCA from second position with a win against SC Villa over the weekend.

Steven Mukwala will be instrumental for the tax men while Arua Hill who sit 5th with 37 points will rely on Bright Vuni, Alfred Leku and Rashid Kawawa for success.

In Jinja, hosts Busoga United take on bottom of the log Tooro United in a relegation six pointer.

Uganda Cranes defender Bevis Mugabi has revealed why he chose to continue his career at Scottish club Motherwell.

The star says it was mainly of the loyalty he was showed by the team when he first arrived at Fir Park.

Mugabi agreed an extension until 2024 last month – the former Yeovil man having been at the Steelmen since September 2019.

Mugabi, 26, explained why he made the call to stay in Lanarkshire when speaking to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations.

He said: “I decided to stay with the club because of the loyalty they showed me when I first came to Scotland.

“First and foremost, they believed in my ability even when I wasn’t playing well and that is the reason why I probably decided to stay and develop further as a player and a person.

“But most importantly it was about playing games consistently. I believe I made the right decision to stay at the club.”

Asked how he was received when he first joined the club, he added: “The fans were really welcoming and supported me through a lot of things and I am very happy to be staying honestly.”

Born in Harrow, England, the lanky defender started his football journey at Southampton football academy before joining the now fifth division English side Yeovil Town.

UPDF Football Club returned to winning ways after overcoming Gaddafi FC on Tuesday in the game played in Jinja.

The 3-1 win for UPDF came as a sigh of relief for Brian Ssenyondo whose side had gone 13 successive League games without a win.

The Bombo-based army outfit had last won in December 2021, edging Soltilo Bright Stars FC (2-1 at home).

It was goals from Ezekiel Katende, Kigozi Ambrose, and Okello Donato that guided UPDF FC to victory while Brian Kalumba (on loan from Vipers SC) scored for Gaddafi.

Katende fired UPDF FC into an early lead curling home from a free kick in the 10th minute.

Gadaffi was twice denied by the woodwork, first Seif Batte failed to score from the rebound after a fine save from Goalkeeper Wasswa Yusuf while Alex Kitata saw his header hit the upright.

They however drew level six minutes to the break when Kalumba tucked home and the first half ended one all.

UPDF regained their lead in the 51st minute through Kigozi before Okello stretched the lead six minutes later.

The win means UPDF FC move to 9th place on the table with 27 points same as Gaddafi FC who are one place above with a superior goal difference.

Crested Cranes forward Fauzia Najjemba opened her goal account at BIIK Shymkent in Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

Najjemba helped her side to overcome FC Okzhetpes in the semifinals of the Kazakhstan Women’s Cup.

The lethal striker who was making her competitive debut for BIIK Shymkent came off the bench to score and assist as her team claimed a 3-0 win.

Gulnara Gabelia, Alina Litvinenko scored the other goals, all of them coming in extra time after normal time had ended goalless.

BIIK Shymkent will now face Tomiris Turan in the final slated for Thursday, 31st March 2022. Tomiris Turan rolled to a 5-0 win in their semifinal clash against BJMORSM 17.
