Onduparaka FC striker Mohammed Shaban is glad he is rediscovering his mojo after missing out on football action for a while.

The star is now turning out for his childhood club in the North of the country after tough stints at Vipers, KCCA and Raja Casablanca.

His career had been blighted by injuries especially while at Vipers where he failed to make any impact as he sat out most of the games.

Midway last season, he was indefinitely suspended by the club over indiscipline.

To date, the striker is rediscovering himself and has promised to start scoring the goals again via the club’s portal.

“I know the fans are not happy because the goals are not coming yet particularly from me, but what matters most to me at the moment is playing football again.

“It’s not easy to recover from the injuries for the past two seasons. I think time and patience count most at this stage. The goals will soon flow,” he said.

Onduparaka have so far played five games in the current Uganda Premier League season. They have only recorded one win – against Bright Stars but lost to BUL and Vipers.

They have only found the back of the net twice after five rounds.

Uganda maintained their winning run at the 2021 CECAFA U20 Women’s Championship, edging Eritrea 2-0 at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru on Wednesday.

Goals from Hadijah Nandago and Fauzia Najjemba in either half earned Uganda maximum points that keep them on top of the standings.

Eritrea were disciplined in their defending and kept Uganda at bay for long spells.

Nandago broke the deadlock through a rebound in the 25th minute after goalkeeper Rim Redie Yemane had kept out Zaina Nandede’s effort.

Four minutes upon restart, Najjemba beat the Eritrea defence for pace before firing past onrushing Yemane to double Uganda’s lead.

The result means Uganda moves back to the top of the table with 9 points from three games, same as Ethiopia but the tournament hosts have a superior goal difference of 19 goals.

Other Matchday 3 Games

In the other games played, Ethiopia defeated Tanzania 2-1 but the game ended in brawls with Tanzanian players fighting against the match officials after their late-late equaliser was chalked off for offside.

Burundi beat hapless Djibouti 6-0 to earn their first win.

Action will resume on Saturday with Burundi facing Ethiopia, Tanzania will play Uganda while Eritrea will take on Djibouti.

The tournament is being played in a round-robin format and the team with the most points at the end are declared winners of the 2021 edition.

Uganda Cranes coach Milutin Sredojević Micho has lavished on praise on Mamelodi Sundowns goal keeper Denis Onyango after saving five penalties to claim the MTN 8 tournament on Saturday.

Onyango stopped five penalty kicks to seal a 3-2 post match penalty victory over Cape Town at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

His prowess helped Sundowns win the accolades for the first time since 2007 after the game ended 1-1 after extra-time with goals from Fagrie Lakay and Thapelo Morena’s 24th-minute opener that cancelled out each other.

Speaking after his heroics Micho branded Onyango “superman” and a “pure legend.”

“For last 50+years in life and 20+years in Africa I was really thinking that SUPERMAN doesn’t exist in the game of FOOTBALL until seeing my man professor DENIS ONYANGO in mindblowing fashion saving 5 penalties and winning the cup for his team lifting trophy as captain & pure LEGEND,” he wrote on his social media.

Uganda made its intentions clear as the 2021 CECAFA Women’s U20 Championship got underway on Saturday at FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

The pre-tournament favourites set the tone in their opening game, beating Burundi 5-1.

Skipper Fauzia Najjemba (brace), Shamirah Nalugya, Magret Kunihira and Hadijah Nandago were on target for Uganda while Burundi got their consolation through Pascicie Butoyi.

Uganda dominated proceedings right from kick-off and the opening goal came inside five minutes through Nandago. The diminutive forward was well-positioned inside the area to fire home, thanks to Najjemba’s assist.

Seven minutes later, Kunihira doubled the lead for the hosts, scoring off the right-wing.

Biira Nadunga picked Najjemba up with a long ball and Uganda’s captain beat Burundi defence for pace before calmly finishing off.

Burundi pulled one back through Butoyi as the half neared the end, capitalising on a miscommunication between Samalie Nakacwa and Biira Nadunga.

In the second half, Najjemba and Nalugya added a goal each to put the icing on the cake.

Najjemba had the chance to complete a hattrick but her stoppage-time penalty hit the woodwork.

Former Uganda Cranes and Mamelodi Sundowns goal keeper Denis Onyango has lauded his teammates for being resilient as they won the MTN 8 tournament on Saturday.

Onyango saved five penalty kicks to seal a 3-2 post match penalty victory over Cape Town at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

His prowess helped Sundowns win the MTN 8 for the first time since 2007 after the game ended 1-1 after extra-time with goals from Fagrie Lakay and Thapelo Morena’s 24th-minute opener that cancelled out each other.

Speaking after the heroics, Onyango credited his teammates, coach Rulani Mokwena and fellow custodian Kennedy Mweene for the work done before.

“It was insane but we kept on believing. The guys didnt drop their heads and we knew they were dragging this game to penalties and they knew they can score but we had it mind that it’s our game,” he said.

“With the mentality from the boys we kept going. We knew that we would drag them as long as we can and we missed a lot of chances to be honest but they got one chance and they took it but ofcourse good resilience from the boys.”

Talking up the specactular performance with the penalties, he said; “We knew where most of them kick. Ofcourse most of them had gone off.

“I had to use my instincts and I had to reward Kennedy because he started this journey of the penalties and coach Rulani reminded me that Kennedy did very well in the first game against Chiefs so I have to reward him.

“This is what I had to give the club and the goal keeping department.”
