Uganda’s representatives at the Cecafa Qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League, Lady Doves progressed to the semifinals after overcoming PVP FC on Friday.

In the final Group A game played at Nyayo National Stadium, Lady Doves secured a 3-0 win against the team from Burundi.

Spencer Nakacwa, Norah Alupo, and livewire Fazila Ikwaput scored a goal apiece to guide the Masindi-based club to victory.

This was their second win at the tournament, having outwitted FAD FC 5-0 in the opening game. The other group game against Simba Queens ended goalless.

With Simba Queens obliterating hapless FAD FC 10-0, the Tanzanian side leads Group A with a better goal difference with the two teams finishing on seven points apiece.

Uganda Cranes kicked off their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign by picking a point off Kenya Harambee Stars at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi.

Uganda Cranes started the game on a low note with defender Halid Lwaliwa picking up an injury just five minutes into the game. Express Football Club captain Enock Walusimbi was introduced at the heart of defence.

The Cranes had the first attempt on target in the 20th minute from midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga who was playing his first-ever game for the senior team.

Three minutes later, Joseph Ochaya shot off target from about 25 yards out as Uganda settled into the game. Moses Waiswa had a free-kick fly wide towards the half-hour before

Milton Karisa was brought down in what could have been a penalty decision that was instead turned into a free-kick.

Uganda Cranes lost captain Emmanuel Arnold Okwi to injury towards the very end of the first half and did not return for the second with Derrick Nsibambi taking his place after the break.

There were no clear opportunities from either side as Uganda earned its first point of the campaign that head coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic was content with.

“The campaign is officially off and a point is good enough. We still have to iron out goal-scoring issues and at one stage, I believe we would have been given a penalty,” said Micho.

Uganda Cranes and CF Montréal left back Mustafa Kizza has revealed he is happy with the competition on the current national team ahead of the FIFA Word Cup qualifier against Kenya.

Kizza who is among the foreign based players on the team alongside Paul Derrick Nsibambi and another left back Isaac Muleme, says the graft makes him work even harder to earn his spot among the best.

“First of all, I am humbled to be here to serve my beloved country, Uganda. When I arrived here, I found the camp buzzing and the morale high. It is good to have healthy competition and this helps the team. Personally, the competition pushes me to the limit to deliver my best,” he said.

Kizza has already played for the Uganda U-20 and U-23 teams with 12 caps to his name on the senior national team and he looks forward serving the national team for a long time.

“I want to serve the national team with one heart and the dream to play at the FIFA World Cup is realistic” he added.

Besides him, there are three other players vying for the spot of left back that is to say TP Mazembe’s Joseph Benson Ochaya, Czech Republic based Isaac Muleme and Vipers Sports Club’s Abdu-Azizi Kayondo.

Head coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic says all the four are very key to the success of the team, a reason he decided to include all of them.

“The four left backs are here because of demand and particular services expected from them. I have five left footed players on the squad with Richard (Basangwa). I would have liked to have the sixth as well if conditions were favourable for Allan Okello. We are all aware of what left footers can offer to any team,” Micho said.

The team is set to conduct the final training session on Wednesday at 4 PM (Nyayo International Stadium) ahead of the big clash on Thursday, 2nd September 2021.

Uganda Cranes assistant coach Moses Basena is looking forward to achieving success upon his reunion with Serbian Milutin’ Micho’ Sredojevic.

Basena officially reported for work last Saturday evening and was part of the Sunday training sessions with the team.

He believes the reunion with Micho will produce tangible positive results.

“It has always been good working with Micho for a long time now and achieved some big milestones in football, he said.

“We have been in touch not physically but we communicated on a regular basis on football issues. We have achieved some milestones and I believe we shall continue achieving.”

Basena replaced the former, Charles Livingstone Mbabazi. The latter turned down the job for unclear reasons.

The national team is preparing for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Mali in group E.

“We are preparing the team and shall find colleagues in Ethiopia to join and then we shall assess the team. We are trying to improve the team mentally and physically.

“The young players have been very competitive, trying to impress to fight for themselves and the country. They have also fought for everything that football offers,” he added.

Basena worked with Micho since 2015 and they jointly qualified the team to the AFCON finals in 2017 hosted by Gabon.
