With the regular season of the National Basketball League set to end on Sunday, the three teams that will not be competing in the top flight are now known.

Tropical Royals completed the list of relegated teams following a 75-85 loss to Ndejje University Angels on Wednesday night.

It was a do-or-die game for both teams with the victor staying in the premier basketball division in the country.

The Royals (8-15) will play their last game of the season against UCU Canons on Friday. They join Falcons (0-24) and Victoria University (5-19) as the three relegated teams from NBL.

Tropical Royals fell behind 22-15 in the first quarter and never recovered with the writing on the wall at halftime.

Samuel Ajak led Ndejje with 23 points, Haron Alinaitwe added 21 while Kumbai scored 13 points to go with 20 boards.

Denis Tom Omara (17), Juma Osman (14), and Norman Musinguzi (10) scored in double figures for Tropical Royals.

Over 200 participants took the road on Sunday morning in the Fort Portal leg of the Tooro Kingdom MTN-sponsored inter-county cyclIng competition.

Tooro Kingdom Sports Minister, Michael Wandera, who presided over the event said that Fort Portal had registered the highest number of participants since they started.

Wandera appreciated everyone who participated in the event as well as the winners.

“I am happy that we are progressing very well.

“As a Kingdom, we are very happy with MTN because it has supported a lot of activities in Tooro and we shall always work with them.”

Steven Ayebale, the winner of the ordinary bicycle category, was delighted with the reward from the sponsors of the competition – MTN Uganda.

“Am happy that I have finally won and MTN has given me the cash prize, am going to buy another bicycle and am encouraging other people to also participate because it is a very good event and well organized,” said Steven Ayebale, the winner of the Ordinary Bicycles category.

This was the fourth leg of the competition as per the calendar. The opening event took place in Kyaka County.

The next leg of the competition will be in Bunyangabu County this Friday, 12th August.

The grand final will happen on 4th September 2022 with Omukama Rukirabasaija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV flagging off the event at Karuzika in Fort Portal.

South Africa 48 – 54 Uganda

Uganda left Birmingham on a high after claiming the scalp of South Africa to cap a successful outing in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The She Cranes finished in the fifth position after striving to stave off experienced opposition in South Africa.

South Africa started the better out of the two sides taking an early 5 – 1 lead but took the first quarter 15-13.

Uganda had the momentum in the second quarter scoring the first two goals and by the half-time break, Fred Mugerwa’s ladies led 30 – 21.

South Africa came out fighting at the start of the third quarter, with their attack looking much more fluid.

Ine-Marie Venter and Lefebre Rademan were working well together in the shooting circle but Uganda further progressed into the third quarter break leading by just 4.

Uganda took a 6-goal lead with 7 minutes left on the clock before running down the clock with patient play for the final 2 minutes.

Uganda settled for fifth place ahead of South Africa. Malawi is 7th, Wales (8th), Scotland (9th), Northern Ireland (10th), Trinidad and Tobago (11th), and Barbados (12th).

Uganda’s National Netball Team, She Cranes, registered a magnificent win against South Africa to finish fifth at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

It’s the first victory for She Cranes against Africa’s top-ranked side in fifteen years and it’s Uganda’s best performance at the games.

The side had seen off Malawi to finish third in the group and set up an all-African decider for 5th place.

Mary Nuba Cholhok who started at GS scored 31 goals while GA Irene Eyaru contributed 21 and Shadia Nassanga added two more in a historical win.

Ine-Mari Venter and Van Der Berg scored 25 and 17 goals respectively for South Africa in a losing effort.

South Africa looked better early in the game but once the She Cranes settled in, they seamlessly controlled the game thereafter.

The She Cranes led 15-13 after the first quarter and were up by nine points at halftime.

South Africa started to get grip on the game when Jesca Acan was subbed out and cut the deficit to just four points going into the last quarter.

However, the Ugandans were industrious in the last quarter, scoring on every possession to register the win.

Uganda’s U18 national basketball girls’ team, Junior Gazelles, is off to Madagascar for the FIBA U18 AfroBasket.

The team leaves for the tournament that tipped off after just a week-long preparation.

The team is without Patience Karungi staying behind but Head coach Ali Mavita is optimistic nonetheless.

“We had the same team in Cairo so this is not a new stage for them.

“We are looking forward to getting a good tournament and going as far as possible. Our target is a podium place.

“Being that this team has been together for a while, it makes our work easier as coaches in terms of bonding. They are a great group of girls,” she said.

This will be the fourth time the Junior Gazelles will be featuring at the U18 Afrobasket after previous appearances in 2008 (Tunisia), 2016 (Egypt), and 2018 (Mozambique).

The top two teams will qualify for the 2023 FIBA U19 World Cup that will be hosted in Madrid, Spain. The event will take place from July 15 to 23.

Junior Gazelles, Uganda’s U18 national basketball girls’ team, flies to Madagascar on Friday for the FIBA U18 AfroBasket.

The tournament tipped off today with the Junior Gazelles drawn against Mali, Algeria, and hosts Madagascar in Group A.

Head coach Ali Mavita is optimistic the team that has been in a residential camp at the Africa Bible University in Lubowa will put up a good fight and targets the podium.

“We had the same team in Cairo so this is not a new stage for them. We are looking forward to getting a good tournament and going as far as possible. Our target is a podium place.

“Being that this team has been together for a while, it makes our work easier as coaches in terms of bonding. They are a great group of girls,” she said.

She Cranes recorded their third win at the group stage of the 2022 Commonwealth Games netball tournament in Birmingham, England.

The She Cranes defeated Malawi Flames 56-43 in their final Group B encounter on Thursday, bossing all quarters of the game.

Fred Mugerwa’s charges started off by winning the opening quarter 14-11 and by halftime, Uganda had assumed a four-goal lead (28-24).

Uganda’s lead was extended to 8 goals (41-33) at the end of the 3rd quarter and eventually won the game by 13 (56-43), their third victory in five matches.

The She Cranes defeated Trinidad and Tobago (62-28), and Northern Ireland (63-26).

The losses came against world champions New Zealand (53-40) and host England (56-35).

Uganda will now face South Africa on Friday in the 5th place playoff.

Uganda 63 – 26 Northern Ireland

Uganda Netball She Cranes registered their second win at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth games when they dispatched Northern Ireland on Wednesday.

Head coach Fred Mugerwa’s ladies were favourites going into the second match of day 6, ranked 6th in the World Netball World Rankings, Northern Ireland 11th. 

Northern Ireland had a tough start, struggling to get the ball to their shooters but also dealing with the height of Mary Cholhok at goal shooter.

Uganda’s confidence kept rising as the game progressed, netting 17 goals in that quarter to lead at half-time 28 – 11. 

She Cranes dominated the second half, with their defence putting significant pressure on the Northern Ireland attack and at the third quarter break Uganda led 45 – 19. 

In the final quarter, the She Cranes showed no sign of relaxing and the final score was Uganda 63 – 26 Northern Ireland, giving Uganda their second win after the 62 – 28 success over Trinidad and Tobago.

Uganda 62 – 28 Trinidad & Tobago

The Uganda Netball She Cranes were finally successful at the 2022 Commonwealth Games when they upstaged Trinidad & Tobago to register their first victory at the events.

Uganda had initially lost to the world champions, New Zealand 53 – 40 despite winning the third quarter 11 – 8, New Zealand staying ahead 39 – 29 at the third quarter break.

Day 3 required Uganda to make a strong start to the match and the team did exactly that. Uganda raced into a 13-6 lead at the first quarter break.

Trinidad & Tobago were creating turnovers in defense, however, they could not convert these into goals.

For Uganda, Mary Cholhok always presented an option in the shooting circle, scoring 20/22. At half-time, the score was Uganda 33 – 13 Trinidad & Tobago.

The She Cranes kept it tight within the circle and GK Nalwanja produced a brilliant flying interception midway through the quarter.

Trinidad & Tobago kept fighting however, and produced a much better display this quarter. At the third quarter break, Uganda led 47 – 22.

The impressive performance by Uganda handed head coach Fred Mugerwa’s first victory with the match finishing Uganda 62 – 28 Trinidad & Tobago.

Victoria Cup 2022:

The annual Victoria Cup between the national golf teams of Uganda and Kenya returns after a two-year absence at the Limuru Country Club.

Last played in 2019, the tournament returns with the 2022 edition teeing off from the 28th until the 31st of July.

Kenya and Uganda renew their healthy golf rivalry on the golf course following the recently concluded Zone IV Golf Championship held at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course in Kigo, Uganda.

Kenya won the zone IV championship for the first time since Uganda’s back-to-back victories in 2018 (Vet Lab) and 2019 (Bujumbura).

Team Uganda will be skippered by Fort Portal-based golfer Joseph Cwinyaai. The other nine players on the team include; Godfrey Nsubuga, Andrew Ssekibejja, Ibrahim Bagalana, Dennis Asaba, Tom Jingo, Joseph Kasozi, Ronald Mugisha, Michael Alunga, and Joseph Reagan Akena.

Kenya National Golf Team celebrate the Zone IV Trophy at Lake Victoria Resort and Spa Golf Course in Uganda

Female professional Flavia Namakula is the head coach of Uganda.

“We are focused on performing well at the Victoria Cup in Limuru. We have to avenge the Zone IV loss at home,” Cwinyaai notes.

Kenya will parade familiar faces, four of who traveled to Uganda for the Zone IV tournament.

Under head coach John Van Liefland, Kenya has had 14 players in vigorous training from whom the final 10 will be named.

The 14 players are; Dennis Maara (Limuru), Adel Balala (Nyali), Jay Sandhu (Muthaiga), John Lejirma (Railway), Michael Karanga (Kiambu), Sammy Mulama (Golf Park), Ebill Omollo (Vet Lab), John Kamais (Nakuru).

The juniors on the team include; Njoroge Kibugu (Muthaiga), Daniel Kiragu (Muthaiga), Mikael Kihara (Vet Lab), Steve Orinda (Vet Lab), Chrisphine Owuor (Vet Lab), Lee Kimathi (Windsor) and Ngondo Kimemia (Sigona).

Since its inception in 2016, Kenya has won the Victoria Cup thrice.
