JKL Lady Dolphins edged KIU Rangers to remain unbeaten in the 2022 National Basketball League season.

The two-time champions however had to hold off a late KIU surge in what proved to be their closest game this season.

KIU Rangers matched JKL shot for shot and the latter led by just a point at halftime (39-38).

JKL started to pull away and opened the fourth quarter with a 12-0 run to open an 18-point gap in a five-minute spell that saw KIU miss all their six shots.

But the Rangers exhibited a high fighting spirit ignited by guard Fildauce Namuleme who made three triples to bring her side within three points with just half a minute on the clock.

They could have done better when they got possession after Stella Oyella fluffed a lay-up, but having used all their timeouts, the Rangers failed to make good use of their possession and Ines Kanyamunza saw her lay-up rim out and with it, went all their chances.

Hope Akello led the way for the Dolphins with 18 points and 12 rebounds to take home the player of the match accolade. Brenda Ekone scored a game-high 20 points, while Evelyn Nakiyinji scored 12 points and made 5 assists.

Ines Kanyamunza had 15 points, Namulema scored all her 12 points from downtown while Perus Nyamwenge had 13 points in a losing effort.

Sharon Kirabo had 13 rebounds and 4 assists while Patricia Cate Nakiru had 10 points including two beautiful back-to-back threes that gave KIU a fighting stance when JKL tried to pull away.

JKL has now won eight in as many games and will complete their first round with a pending fixture against Nabisunsa Girls.

Peter Sifuma put up another man of the match performance as UCU Canons rolled past JKL Dolphins in the NBL at the MTN Arena.

Sifuma finished the game with 20 points and 13 rebounds to earn the player of the game.

The Canons needed to come from down after trailing 29-31 at halftime. They limited JKL to just 10 points in the third quarter to gain control and did just enough from there on to finish off the game.

Jerry Kayanga and Fadhil Chuma added 13 and 12 points respectively, and the latter added 12 rebounds to complete his double-double.

UCU Canons have completed their first-round campaign on top with 11 wins and just one loss. That loss, against Victoria University, came on Sunday on the back of back-to-back games played on Friday and Saturday!

Mabor Makol collected a game-high 23 points but his effort was not enough for JKL who recorded the seventh loss of the season.

The action continues on Saturday with four games at KIU in Kansanga. Our Saviour Vs City Oilers has been postponed after the Oilers players were involved in an accident on their way back from the burial of James Okello’s Mother.
