Express secured a narrow 1-0 victory against URA in the Uganda Premier League at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku on Saturday.
Isaac Wagoina was on target as the Red Eagles ended the three-game winless streak. This was also Baker Mbowa’s first victory in four games as the head coach.
Mbowa made a big change by introducing Abubaker Yunus in the place of Abdul Kimera who displayed a very poor show in the previous game against Maroons.
Wagoina fired the hosts ahead in the 43rd minute after converting Marvin Oshaba’s delivery.
The Tax collectors greatly improved in the second half but were not lethal enough in front of the goal.
In the 62nd minute, Moses Aliro attempted from a distance but the custodian Abubaker made a timely touch to keep the ball out.
With eight minutes to play, Eddy Ssebandeke’s powerful shot bounced off the frame but the rebound was fully gripped by URA’s custodian.
In the 85th minute, Abubaker made a spectacular save to deny James Begisa’s long-range effort as the visitors came so close.
The victory lifts Express into eighth position with 32 points while URA lies ninth with 31 points in 23 games.
BUL registered a well-deserved 3-0 victory against Wakiso Giants in the Uganda Premier League at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru on Saturday.
The victory came in handy putting an end to a five-game winless run for the oil manufacturers.
Jeromy Kirya put the hosts ahead in the 25th minute and later held on till the break with their narrow lead.
Alex Kitata doubled BUL’s lead ten minutes into the second stanza. This goal also ended the forward’s drought as he stretched his tally to nine.
Kitata concluded his brace in the 73rd minute after tapping the ball into an empty net as Wakiso Giants’ backline looked on.
The victory lifted BUL back to the second position with 43 points, one behind log leaders Kitara after 23 games.
Wakiso Giants lie 12th on the log with 26 points, eight clear of the red zone.
Next on the menu, BUL will host Express on Saturday, April 20 while Wakiso Giants will take on Busoga United on Friday, April 26.

Vipers secured a narrow 2-1 victory against UPDF in the Uganda Premier League at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Friday.
It was a breathtaking victory for Vipers since they had gone three games without a win in their yard.
Vipers nearly took an early lead but Frank Katongole and Ashraf Mandela’s long strikes were palmed away by Anyama.
Allan Okello gave the hosts the lead in the 11th minute with a sublime finish that curled inside the back post after beating UPDF custodian Anyama.
Five minutes later, Katongole put to waste a glorious chance as he failed to tap the ball into an empty net after Okello had earlier done the dirty work.
Erick Kenzo Kambale came close to doubling matters but instead nodded wide Mandela’s well-weighed delivery in front of goal.
Vipers’ custodian Alfred Mudekereza was called to action as he rushed off the line to block Shugai Kaliisa’s low effort in the 43rd minute.
The second stanza started on a slow note, unlike the first half where the hosts were badly looking for an early lead.
Kambale finally doubled the hosts’ lead ten minutes into the second half with a ground-powerful effort that slid below Anyama on the near post.
In the 72nd minute, the visitors pulled back one through Samson Kasozi who forced Christopher Tebandeke’s corner kick into the back of the net.
The victory guided Vipers into the second position on the log with 41 points, three behind leaders Kitara who have played two games more.
UPDF is stuck at the bottom of the log with 16 points in 22 games.
KCCA secured a 2-1 victory against Gaddafi in the Uganda Premier League at the Gaddafi Arena on Friday evening.
It was a first-half blitz as all action happened in the opening forty-five minutes and nothing much happened in the second stanza of the game.
The Kasasiro Boys showed character on the day as they rallied from a goal down to secure maximum points away from home.
Rashid Mpata gave Gaddafi the lead early in the fifth minute after guiding the ball past Anthony Emojong into the back of the net.
At the half-hour mark, Etienne Katenga restored parity for the visitors with a fine finish. The forward was also on the scoresheet in the first leg between these two sides.
Shaban Muhammad fired the visitors ahead five minutes later after capitalising on Katenga’s spectacular delivery as Gaddafi’s backline looked on.
In the 41st minute, Emojong pulled off a stunning save to deny Hassan Musana as KCCA maintained their lead going into the break.
Both teams made changes but nothing much changed on the day as neither side found the back of the net.
KCCA registered their fourth straight league victory while on the other hand, Gaddafi suffered their third loss on the bounce.
The victory sent KCCA to the sixth position with 35 points while Gaddafi is 14th with 18 points in 22 games.
KCCA returns to action on Thursday, April 18 as they host Mbarara City while Gaddafi will take on UPDF two days earlier.

Vipers will be eager to complete a double against UPDF in the Uganda Premier League at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Friday.
Vipers have been hot and cold thus struggling to impress at their home which was not the case in the previous campaigns.
However, the 2-0 victory against URA will pump some positivity and enthusiasm in the boys who will be now seeking to maintain winning ways.
During the pre-match conference, Vipers assistant head coach Richard Wasswa revealed that he expects a tough game against UPDF.
“It will not be an easy game since every team is fighting for a better position on the table of the league,” he stated.
“We know it’s going to be a very big fight between the two teams because UPDF is an experienced team with good players and coaches. So we are ready for the fight,” he added.
“We shall come and see that we capitalise on the home advantage and try and see that we get the desired points. We need to work as a team so that we achieve the desired mark.”
It still remains a point of doubt whether Vipers head coach Livingstone Mbabazi will be in the dugout after missing the previous game against URA.
For starters, UPDF have greatly improved securing two victories in two games as they aim to fly out of the red zone.
With Kitara and SC Villa having dropped points, Vipers have a chance to reduce the gap between them the teams ahead on the log.

KCCA head coach Abdallah Mubiru expects a tough challenge against Gaddafi as the two sides lock horns at Gaddafi Arena on Friday.
After losing 6-1 in the first leg, Mubiru believes Gaddafi will come into this encounter so desperate to pick something positive from the game.
During the pre-match conference, Mubiru asserted that since the season is nearing an end, different teams are working hard to achieve different objectives.
“We are in the final bend of the season with teams chasing different objectives,” Mubiru stated.
“It’s going to be a [more] complicated game than one we had in the first round because then, they were safe but at the moment, they are threatened by relegation,” he added.
“We have prepared players for this and so we have to work hard so that we register the win away from home.”
The Kasasiro Boys will seek to keep the thrilling form that has seen them win three consecutive games in the league including beating NEC and rivals Vipers.
On the other side, Gaddafi are in the mini-crisis losing three consecutive goals and conceding nine goals in the last two games.
Busoga United held SC Villa in a 1-1 stalemate in the Uganda Premier League encounter played on Thursday evening.
In a game played at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru, Villa created several chances but was so wasteful allowing Busoga United back into the game.
After seven minutes, goalkeeper Micheal Lutaya made a stunning save to deny Charles Lwanga who nearly capitalised on Stephen Odong’s howler in the dangerous area.
Charles Lwanga fired the hosts ahead with a simple tap in thanks to Abasi Kyeyune’s delivery. It was a brilliant team goal that was started by Kenneth Semakula before it was guided home.
In the 22nd minute, defender Hamisi Batega was replaced by George Dhafa to try and find a solution for quick-footed forward Kyeyune.
Before the end of the first stanza, SC Villa created several chances but were not lethal enough to have them converted.
Doca Mweru and Emmanuel Ajo were introduced on the field of play to replace Franco Magomba and Hussein Sajjabi as the hosts tried to bounce back into the game.
Five minutes into the second stanza, Lwanga was set up by Jonah Patrick Kakande but he instead nodded the ball wide of the frame.
As the second half unfolded, Busoga United greatly improved putting a lot of pressure onto SC Villa’s backline but the forwards were a bit blunt.
With eight minutes to play, Moses Logono levelled matters with a powerful strike past SC Villa custodian Jean Braddy Wokorach.
SC Villa moves second on the log with 40 points from 21 games while Busoga United is 13th with 18 points having played a game more.

Bright Stars secured a 4-0 victory against Gaddafi in the Uganda Premier League encounter played at Kavumba Recreation Centre, Wakiso on Sunday.
It was a strong start from the hosts who committed several bodies upfront though Gaddafi’s backline stood firm.
In the 37th minute, Nordin Bunjo was tripped in the area and the hosts were awarded a penalty.
Nelson Senkatuka stepped up on the occasion and converted the penalty from the 12-yard mark thus breaking the deadlock.
As Gaddafi fought to level matters, the hosts took the second gear thus grilling them in a second-half blitz.
Cleophus Fiat doubled Bright Stars’ lead with a long-range strike that got everyone on their feet applauding the fashion in which it was guided home.
With seven minutes to play, Frank Kizanyiro got Bright Stars’ third before Ssenkatuka put an icing on the cake in the 89th minute.
It was a joyful day for Bright Stars as Gaddafi’s misery was compounded. Today’s loss means Gaddafi has conceded nine goals in two games.
The victory sends Bright Stars to the 10th position on the log with 28 points from 22 games while Gaddafi is 13th with 18 points having played a game less.
URA head coach David Obua says his side was unlucky in the game they lost 2-0 against Vipers in the Uganda Premier League on Saturday.
Despite falling to Vipers 2-0, the Tax Collectors had a great game weaving in a number of passes but failed to take away their chances in front of goal.
In the post-match conference, Obua stated that the game could easily go either way though they will now shift focus to the next opponent.
“We were unlucky yet again, not to go ahead of this one too. The game should have gone either way,” Obua stated before adding.
“I am always telling the boys, to be lucky you have to work harder than the opponent. These guys (Vipers) were in the back kicking balls. They’re the champions, they’ve got more quality players and you would expect that they should have played a better game than us,” he added.
“Generally am happy with the boys. We didn’t change our style of play, regardless of what pressure that was surrounding us, we kept on playing. We won’t give up and we shall come back again.”
The gaffer also commended the officiating for being fair and giving the game the required attention thus blaming the loss on the opposition’s lack of concentration.
The winless run for URA extends to four games across all competitions. They lie eighth on the log with 31 points after 22 games.
Next on the log, URA will visit Express on Saturday, April 6 at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.
SC Villa registered a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Mbarara City in the Uganda Premier League at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku on Saturday.
It was a thrilling victory since it sent Villa into the third position on the log with 39 points gathered from 20 games.
In the pre-match conference, Lutalo revealed that they hardly staged a deserving first half but were able to return in the second half with a lot of urge to see the work done.
“I thank the team for the great fight made to see that all points belong to us,” Lutalo stated shortly after the final whistle.
“We had not a so good first half but we came back with the hunger to secure a win which we did. We are now looking towards the games up front. I thank the fans for the turn-up,” he added.
It was a close encounter from the start though SC Villa edged Mbarara City taking away two of the many chances created in front of goal.
Lutalo fired the home side ahead in the 21st minute through a free kick. The agile midfielder’s free-kick was perfectly guided into the back of the net after Diego Missi Semugera was fouled at the edge of the box.
However, Mbarara City levelled matters through Henry Kitegenyi after Villa’s custodian Jean Braddy Wokorach failed to deal with the delivery.
Kiwanuka regained Villa’s lead in the 69th minute after connecting with Joseph Kafumbe’s well-weighed delivery.
Next on the menu, Villa will be on the road to face off with Busoga United on Thursday, April 31, 2023, at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.
