National rugby Premier League defending champions Heathens took charge of their destiny this season by defeating their closest rivals Black Pirates.
Heathens defeated Pirates 23-10 and denied the latter a losing bonus point to open a five-point gap at the top of the standing after eight matchdays.
Winger Lawrence Ssebuliba opened the scoring with a brilliant solo run in the ninth minute off a box kick that went straight into his hands.
Pirates responded fifteen minutes late when Humphrey Tashobya collected a loose ball after Michael Wokorach lost it in a tackle by Isaac Massa to touch down under the uprights.
First center Innocent Gwoktho restored Heathens lead with Ivan Kabagambe in the bin.
Two minutes into the second half, Gwoktho completed his brace with quick thinking after Pirates’ defense was caught in an offside position. Chris Lubanga converted and the fly-half would later deny Pirates a bonus point with a couple of penalties.
The win took Heathens points tally to 38, while Pirates in second are on 33 points.
Ahead of the Rugby Premier League top-of-the-table clash on Saturday at Kyadondo, Heathens RFC have unveilled a new kit.
The official kit was unveiled on Thursday and sees the record league champions return to the yellow colour for the tops and blue shorts.
Kyadondo Rugby Club Chairman Brian Tabaruka is delighted to see the team regain its original colours.
“Heathens are a great team and [as you can see] they currently lead in the league. We are proud of them and are confident that their performance will always be top-notch,” Tabaruka said at the unveiling presser.
Team skipper Michael Wokorach echoed the Heathens targets for the season.
“Our main target this season is to win games with bonus points. However, this league is tough and the game against Pirates will equally be tough and the players know about it. However, we’re in great shape and are confident of winning it,” said the veteran center.
Heathens are top of the standings with 34 points, just a point above second-placed Black Pirates.

Black Pirates held off a late surge from Kobs to register a narrow 17-13 win in the National Rugby Premier League on Saturday.
The visitors lit up the clash at Legends Rugby Ground with an early try at the corner from utility back Muhammad Haruna.
A pair of penalties from young scrumhalf Josiah Ssempeke put Kobs in the lead, 06-05, but it did not last long as Pirates stand-in scrumhalf William Nkore split the uprights to restore the lead.
After the break, team captain Ivan Magomu took over Pirates’ kicking duties from William Nkore who had been replaced by Stephen Alul. Magomu was perfect off the tee, converting three penalties to put the Sea Robbers in a seemingly comfortable 17-06 lead.
The Kobs however stayed locked in and pulled the game to within four points after a well-constructed try by Justin Kimono that resulted from a series of phases and good interplay.
Despite the momentum switch to Kobs that kept them in opponent territory, the Pirates stayed solid in defense and held on for the victory.
Despite winning the game, Pirates dropped to second place following Heathens’ bonus-point win against Jinja Hippos at Dam Waters.
Meanwhile, the loss was second in succession for the defending champions having lost to Heathens last weekend.
