Jinja Hippos are the National Sevens champpions!

The Hippos were the most consitent through out the series played across the country

Despite losing the final in the last circuit (Buffaloes 7s) at Kyadondo to Pirates, the side had already sealed the title by virtue of making the finals as they needed to finish in third place to walk away with the national title.

Hippos beat their nearest challenger Heathens 12-05 in the semifinals to seal their maiden title with 128 points, nine clear of Heathens (119) while Pirates (109) and KOBs (108) followed in third and fourth respectively and Impis completing the top five.

Hippos have been the fourth-best team for the past years, behind the big three of Heathens, KOBs and Pirates, in both 7s and 15s version, but were the most consistent top performers having reached the final in five of the seven circuits.

Saidi Atibu’s charges started poorly when they finished 5th at the Wakiso 7s after falling 10-05 in Impis in the quarters to settle for 13 points.

They however reached the final in the next two circuits – Entebbe and Arua – losing both to Heathens, came third at Rujumba 7s in Kings Park and went on top of leaderboard when they lost to KOBs in Fort Portal 7s final.

The Hippos extended their lead in the penultimate circuit they hosted in Jinja, which they went on to win to move seven points clear.

Going to Buffaloes 7s, they needed to finish third to take the overall title. They reached the quarters after coming out of an easy group that had Warriors, Jaguars and Rhinos.

In the quarters, they dispatched Mongers 10-00 to set up a mouthwatering semifinal clash with Heathens.

Tries from Taufik Bagalana and Timothy Mugisha handed them a win over Heathens and ultimately the title.

In the final, they lost to Pirates 07-00 with Timothy Odong scoring a converted try for the Sea Robbers, but the Hippos had already accumulated enough points.

Meanwhile, Walukuba Barbarians finished bottom and hence lose their 7s Core Status, with Rhinos who recently earned promotion taking the slot.

The bowl victory means Uganda finished 17th in the tournament, an improvement from the 19th place finish on its debut in 2018 in San Francisco, USA.

“It’s an absolutely big win for us, it’s the first time winning against Germany and you can see the boys are very happy and proud of themselves,” Michael Wokorach said after the win.

“We have dug deep ever since we lost against Samoa and we came out strong on Day Two, and [on] Day Three we have finished with a very good performance against Germany.

“They are a very strong team but we knew our abilities and capabilities as a team and I think we came and executed well today.

“We fought hard for ourselves, we fought hard for our fans and we fought hard for our country.”
